To hate summer and be counting the days until it’s over…?!?

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 10:54

I hate summer. I absolutely hate it with a passion.

I loathe:-

  • being hot (this makes me very unhappy and depressed)

  • having a back as sweaty as a dripping cucumber (no cool as a cucumber here)

  • suffering in a baking hot car in traffic

  • having to hide in house most of time I’m not working

  • allergies and hay fever letting rip

  • headaches and feeling shit and furious all the time

  • getting bitten by fucking mozzies all the time

  • my poor little dog suffering and having to stay in the shade for 90% of the day

How do people cop in properly hot countries? I wouldn’t last a minute. I remember going to Malaysia as a teen and getting off the plane and thinking “what the hell have I just done?”, and I was slimmer and healthier then.

Disclaimer: I am currently incredibly overweight and wear black all the time (asd) but I just don’t know what to do with myself and am trying to pretend it’s not warm out there. I don’t know what I’ll do when it gets even warmer, especially as I’m still waiting for last winter to arrive!

Please be kind and constructive: I know others like the heat (thank fuck someone does!!), but I despise it, and although I’m fat, I’m working on that!!

First where on earth do you all live that it's so unbearably hot?

“Hot” is subjective. Hot to me is low 40s up. Judging from the recent MN “too hot” threads, hot to some people seems to be from around 16 upwards.

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 20:04

Hi @SpiceRat , just had to say that I’m sorry people are rude about your sweaty head. People are such totters sometimes aren’t they? Sounds mad but have you tried Botox? I had a bit the other day for my ‘11’ and as a “why not?”, and my aesthetician said that it’s great for headaches and sweating etc 💐

Thanks @Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic , I think I mainly worry about my dog as she gets scarily hot and tired!

Yes i can understand you worrying about your dog, it has been very hot today. I think it's going to cool down at the weekend so you've not got long to wait for some relief.

A580Hojas · 22/06/2022 20:44

Surely not yet another of these threads?

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 21:24

Hope you enjoy, @A580Hojas - the solidarity has cheered me up no end. Sad to hear others are suffering (and if you read thread I don’t just mean a dislike of summer but a real hatred/intolerance as in health issues etc), but nice to know I’m not mad!

And thanks again, @Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic- got her a cooling mat and her own fan but she won’t go near either!!

You don't have to join in.

Sunnytwobridges · 23/06/2022 02:03

You’re not alone. I absolutely hate summer for all the reasons you listed and probably more 😂

I get I’ll in the heat and my asthma starts to flare up. I sweat like crazy and I never sleep well as I get hot at night.

i start getting anxious about summer around April, I hate it so much.

i don’t understand why it’s ok for people to complain about the cold but not the heat. Baffles me.

Remaker · 23/06/2022 02:23

I am not a huge fan of hot weather and am Australian! But I love British summers as they feel very mild to me. So I think the answer to your question about people who live in hot countries is that you do acclimatise somewhat. So you still react to hot weather but the temperature that your body considers ‘hot’ is higher. It is currently 17 degrees and sunny here and it is winter. On the weekend the forecast in Sydney is almost the same as London, just the lows will be a few degrees lower.

Most of my Australian friends agree that the UK is very unpleasant when it gets to around 30 degrees because you don’t have the infrastructure for it. Here, houses, shops, restaurants and even public transport are air conditioned. So going inside gives you some relief. Ditto some parts of Australia in winter. If you have no decent heating or insulation getting down to single figures in temp feels absolutely freezing.

Oh and my hayfever is always a million times worse in Europe so I think you have more pollen than we do.

JustAnotherMillennial · 23/06/2022 02:26

Op should I make you jealous? I am back home in New Zealand for a holiday (I am in the lower South Island where the winters are akin to Northern England), and we have had three frosts in a row, the temperture has barely passed 5C, its midday and the lawn at my mum's is still partially white.

I struggle in summers too, a few hot days are nice and then I am over it.

HerRoyalNotness · 23/06/2022 02:53

It’s unseasonably hot here in Texas,
its not normally until end of July we are sick to death of the heat and give up and hibernate. I was looking for something in the garage today and was drenched, I gave up and bought another one 😂

when we first moved here a colleague at the time just told me, who cares if you’re hot and sweaty, everyone is, don’t worry about it, so I don’t anymore. It is awful though.

I agree with you! As I said, I hate summer in England and I struggle with it massively. But I once did a month (holiday) in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in January when it is roasting... wasn't a problem because everywhere is air conditioned. You can escape it!!

Aozora13 · 23/06/2022 11:16

I'm with you OP! I much prefer spring and autumn. I spent a couple of years living in a hot country - not crazy hot but 18-28 degrees all year and occasionally over 30, with limited air conditioning. Things I learned included:

Slow down - rushing around or even striding London commuter style will just make you hot
Shade is your friend
Black clothing is fine - but go for lightweight fabric. I also found it just as cool to wear loose-fitting long trousers/skirts and tops as shorts and a vest. Nice and wafty rather than getting stuck to everything you sit on.
Take tepid showers rather than freezing cold - so your body doesn’t freak out and try to heat itself up (not sure if that’s actual science mind…)
Pack a fan and a small towel for non-aircon public transport

Can't help with the noise or the bastard pollen though!

MsOllie · 23/06/2022 11:21

My cat is all "can we go in yet? Too hot"
He hates summer

To hate summer and be counting the days until it’s over…?!?
Xmasbaby11 · 23/06/2022 11:28

I'm with you! I find the heat really tiring and the bright sunlight uncomfortable to my eyes. I try not to complain irl as I know the summer is short and many people love it.

I woke up approx every 30 mins last night thanks to the heat - just sleep so lightly in this weather.

Pootle40 · 23/06/2022 11:43

dottypotter · 22/06/2022 10:57

It will be the same threads in the winter.

I love summer and wish it was permanently Summer.

Same. It's too short in this country as it is !

NellesVilla · 23/06/2022 19:31

@JustAnotherMillennial , NZ is actually on my future travel list!

And, @MsOllie , hope your cat was a little happier today!!

I’ve never had a cat that hated summer. My last one seemed happy enough at 40+.

I'm not convinced mine is actually a cat, given he can't hunt, loves cuddles and hates any form of heat. If the sun is out he glares and hides in his bed away from outside Confused

etulosba · 23/06/2022 21:18

Sounds like the opposite of mine. No rodent or reptile was safe but he wasn’t keen on cuddles and didn’t mind heat, although he did keep out of the sun when it was very warm.

Fairislefandango · 23/06/2022 21:25

I like summer (and all the other seasons) but I don't like really hot weather. I live in wet, chilly Cumbria. So when it's summer it is less wet and chilly, but rarely very hot!

JiminyGlick · 23/06/2022 21:37

I love all the seasons, but it's only June! I can't imagine being sick of summer yet. I like all the sitting outdoors late, and eating outside and lots of barbecues. We have just bought a hammock - a proper one that goes between trees. I love it.

The only thing I could do without is the light mornings and those bastarding birds that start at 4am. We have a holiday place in southwest Florida. It might be frightfully hot without AC, but at least it doesn't get light until a more civilised 7am ish.

IWanderedLonely · 23/06/2022 21:41

I sympathise as I have a daughter who's always hated summer, BUT we live in a very rainy, cold part of the country & I'm very nesh! I have to put up (on average) with 6 months of being freezing, 3 months of being cold, 2 1/2 months of being okish, and 2 weeks of being blissfully hot.
I rest my case Smile
