To hate summer and be counting the days until it’s over…?!?

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 10:54

I hate summer. I absolutely hate it with a passion.

I loathe:-

  • being hot (this makes me very unhappy and depressed)

  • having a back as sweaty as a dripping cucumber (no cool as a cucumber here)

  • suffering in a baking hot car in traffic

  • having to hide in house most of time I’m not working

  • allergies and hay fever letting rip

  • headaches and feeling shit and furious all the time

  • getting bitten by fucking mozzies all the time

  • my poor little dog suffering and having to stay in the shade for 90% of the day

How do people cop in properly hot countries? I wouldn’t last a minute. I remember going to Malaysia as a teen and getting off the plane and thinking “what the hell have I just done?”, and I was slimmer and healthier then.

Disclaimer: I am currently incredibly overweight and wear black all the time (asd) but I just don’t know what to do with myself and am trying to pretend it’s not warm out there. I don’t know what I’ll do when it gets even warmer, especially as I’m still waiting for last winter to arrive!

Please be kind and constructive: I know others like the heat (thank fuck someone does!!), but I despise it, and although I’m fat, I’m working on that!!

@NellesVilla you can buy special seat covers/pads that will cool your car seat down by attaching the lead to your lighter socket or similar. Just google it for an idea of what’s available.

and you can also get cooling pads for dogs to lie on.

supertedlasso · 22/06/2022 14:47

@SpiceRat mumsnet previously told me about odaban. It works really well on face (and scalp) applied with cotton wool. It is a weeeee bit painful initially but I'm so grateful I was told about it.

Sloth66 · 22/06/2022 15:26

I dread summer every year, but I get bad hay fever and skin eczema like allergies.
really struggle, feel tired and depressed.
September / October are my favourite months , love the cooler air and darker months.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 22/06/2022 15:29

And I hate that it's so offensive to people who like summer?! Why do they get so defensive?
I never understand this either.
I hate rain is acceptable but I hate sun is like you’re murdering a puppy. I’m not sure why people don’t let others have opinions on this.

This^

I have found my people.

I'm overweight and look like a sack of shit in shorts and 'floaty dresses.'
I get dreadful 'chub rub' if I'm not careful. (My thighs used to chafe until they bled when I was walking home from school in the summer, back in the day.)

I have fair skin and I'm well aware of the link between sun burn and skin cancer. I resent that damp or sticky feeling of newly applied sun cream. It's less of a chore than sun burn but ffs.

Hot, sweaty and red in the face through being too hot is not a good look for me.

I enjoy the months from September to May. Summer, for me, is just something to be got over or got through. I keep telling myself nearly finished, nearly finished. Even though there's many long, hot, gruelling, thankless, sleepless, tired, ratty weeks of goddam Summer to go.

Wimbledon tennis bores me rigid but the only thing about it that's good is that it means it's the end of June and the first week in July. Then the schools finish for Summer. Good - a measured six weeks of Summer, then it's over.

Then there's the inevitable back to school promotions in the shops. Hallelujah, not long until Summer fucks off.

buttercuppa · 22/06/2022 15:38

I knew as soon as I read the title that you’re overweight. I liked summer before I gained a load of weight, hated it when I was fat and now love it again since losing weight. It makes a huge difference

You must be so pleased with yourself.

TinaBurner432 · 22/06/2022 15:41

@buttercuppa it's not just to do with weight. I'm size 10 and bloody can't stand it 😂

KyaClark · 22/06/2022 15:57

Autumn is where it is at and I'll fight anyone on this.

5128gap · 22/06/2022 16:07

Most people who hate summer cope by trying to ignore it, but really it's probably more helpful to prepare for it and protect yourself against it like you would winter. No one would begrudge the time and expense to find and buy winter weather clothes, yet for summer we make do.
We go to a lot of trouble and expense keeping our homes warm, but not cool.
Hot summers are going nowhere so if you can I'd start thinking of some investments like an AC unit, blinds, clothing so next hot spell you can at least have some comfort.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/06/2022 16:12

It's worse for people who are overweight yes but everyone is different I'm a size 10 and feel totally exhausted and nauseous

User3568975431146 · 22/06/2022 16:23

I hate it too. Yesterday was the longest day though so the countdown is on to colder weather and dark nights and mornings thank goodness. Cannot wait!! 😃

I’ve been an advocate of it too and recommended it here, but recently it’s been itching on application me too much to use. I will use it on special occasions but day to day is impossible, plus the price sadly.

Vates · 22/06/2022 16:38

I absolutely hate the heat. Dread June, July and August every year. I feel alive in the Winter and positive, although in the South we haven't had a proper one in ages.

It got pretty serious last Summer when I overheated, 32 in my flat and about the same outside. Projectile vomit, headache worse than a blinding migraine (where you see the flashing lights that distort your vision) and cold, clammy to the touch.

An extra special fuck off to anyone who lives in hot places but have air condition on max. Like Florida: everywhere, cars, parks, malls, restaurants and houses all have air conditioner! That's not living in the bloody heat, ya numpty!

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/06/2022 14:39

Oh FGS not ANOTHER one. Must be the 5th thread in the past 2 weeks where the OP says they 'hate summer.' 🙄

Move to bloody Svalbard then. 😐

I’m Don’t bloody open the thread then. Let us have a place to moan.

Now off you fuck and take @Hallyup89 and all the other posters too thick to scroll past an obvious moaning thread with you.

PlacidPenelope · 22/06/2022 16:40

I hate winter with a passion - dark at 4.00 in the afternoon making it feel like the middle of the night, so depressing.

I love the long, light summer evenings.

But on this, @NellesVilla :

How do people cop in properly hot countries? I wouldn’t last a minute. I remember going to Malaysia as a teen and getting off the plane and thinking “what the hell have I just done?”, and I was slimmer and healthier then.

People cope in properly hot countries by:

Properties being air conditioned these days, prior to that properties were designed to be as cool as possible in the heat.

Keeping inside during the time of the day when it is hottest.

Drinking lots of water.

The working day being split so no work is carried out during the hottest part of the day, including shops being shut.

Wearing loose, cotton/natural fibre clothing in light colours.

Hallyup89 · 22/06/2022 12:36

When it's winter I'm going to start a thread every day complaining how fucking awful it is. I hate winter, I hate being cold, I hate my skin being permanently dry and cracking, I hate dark nights because they give me derealisation symptoms and my mental health is crap at that time of year.

Here we've had 3 days, I'll repeat that, 3 DAYS!!! of warmer weather this year. Some of us thrive in summer and would like to enjoy the few days we actually have without some moaning sourpuss being negative about it.

Many people do start those threads. You’re more than welcome to, that’s what Mn is for after all. I’m sure you moan to your friends irl too (although I’m not sure anyone would want to be friends with someone so rude) in winter about why you hate it.

You must be pretty pathetic if a thread you chose to read is ruining your summer. I can’t imagine giving someone else’s opinion on weather so much headspace to the point of it effecting my mood, much less lambasting people for being seriously effected by the weather. Perhaps the heat is getting to you.

How on earth can you find two people doing their best to outwit each in a game of sport which is unscripted boring.

I love winter!!

Tbf, I’m in a very old house that is freezing in winter (bliss) and cool in summer but just don’t want to leave on this heat unless I really have to, like work!!

Same as you. I love Winter it's my favourite time. Cannot stand summer. Constantly feeling like I have to be out doing something with the kids because it lighter outside & warm. Don't suit summer clothes, can't stand sweating. Just miserable

NellesVilla · 22/06/2022 16:58

Exactly, @SmallPrawnEnergy - it’s so nice to have a little moan now and then and feel that support is out there for those of us that are miserable and suffering in this heat, and that we’re not alone in this!

I'm with you. I'd like to live in eternal Spring.

RockStarMartini · 22/06/2022 17:00

First where on earth do you all live that it's so unbearably hot? I'm in the South East (UK) and we've obviously had a few warm days lately but other than it's been fairly average - in fact most of May was a bit on the chillier side.

I'm the opposite and really hate winter - the dark and cold and feeling so bundled up with clothes and the fact it's rarely crisp and beautiful just damp and grey. But I'm approaching a big birthday and recently came to the conclusion that the years are precious and I dont want to waste half of every one I've got left feeling gloomy. So I've done my best to embrace the winter months to find positives and strategies for dealing with the things I dislike.

Like many people I've had some tough times in recent years but one of the things it's taught me is that the old cliche is true - you cant change some things, only how you react to them.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/06/2022 17:02

I understand OP, I get quite depressed in the summer, I perk up come Autumn. The complete opposite of how most people feel.

darlingdodo · 22/06/2022 17:07

I've been moaning at DH about the heat this afternoon. It's 25 degrees here and tooooooo hooooot. I like it about 20 with a gentle breeze. DH is Australian so looks a bit Hmm.

We've also had our winter firewood delivery this morning, trying to preempt stupid price rises so have been barrowing 3 tonnes of logs from the front driveway to the woodstore at the bottom of the garden. I'm sweating like a pig and stink to high heaven. Another hour, then a cool shower and a cold g&t.........

Our homes aren't built to cope with warmer weather - it's all about keeping the heat in. Italian and French houses with their window shutters, tiled floors and through breezes are much better set up.

DogsAndGin · 22/06/2022 17:21

I’m with you OP! It’s a right faff! And needing at least two showers a day is annoying. The car is too hot. Also, the countryside is massively overgrown and I can’t go on lots of my fave walks with the dog.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 22/06/2022 17:48

I'm with you OP I hate summer. Can't stand being too hot and going to bed when it's still light. I'm an Autumn girl. Cosy jumpers and leggings, knee high boots and tights all the way
