For me, it was my mobile phone and apps.

I felt like I couldn't get away from notifications, the beeping, bopping and hopping of my phone drove me mad.

TikTok, SnapChat, Twitter
Worrying that I ‘offend’ anyone, however inadvertently, by doing or not doing the latest PC thing. I’m not intentionally being offensive. I actually couldn’t give two shits about what you choose to do.
People not remembering basics like; waiting to be invited to places/events rather than inserting themselves into a situation, children not answering back every.bloody.time; mental health or additional needs being used as a get out of jail free card (not everyone, calm down); kindness.

To spend the entire month of June seeing everywhere plastered in rainbows, or now with added stripes/symbols/colours etc. (can't keep up as it morphs every few months).

Also the virtue signalling nonsense from corporations pretending to give a toss. Where were they in the 1980? Why don't they change their logos to rainbows in the Middle East? Is it because it's all a load of insincere marketing bs?

Most of my gay/lesbian friends feel the same way and thinks that Pride has become an embarrassment now, esp with the increased sexualisation of the marches etc (e.g. 'kink' people taking part etc).

Selfies have to be the most ridiculous thing ever.

People who wander the streets clutching a coffee. I want to knock them clean out.

So much - but I'm old!

Yes, the half-witted craziness of wokeness. Absolutely despise actual racism, sexism etc, but can't stand the sort of people who spend their time looking for it and being competitively offended. In my experience, most of the culprits are not ethnic minority people, but white British over-thinkers in town halls.

But also - the sheer hypocrisy of the 21st Century, in public and corporate life. Bad customer service or bad government would be easier to bear if it weren't for the pious 'mission statements' which are everywhere now and the mantra 'Your call/enquiry is important to us' when patently they don't give a damn. And if I hear that phrase 'our thoughts and prayers are with.......at this difficult time' in police press statements etc again, I'll run screaming from the room. I bet they're not - so just don't say it - it's meaningless.

Also, putting in automation which just doesn't do the job. Car park payment machines - so complicated. What was wrong with the old 'insert card or cash and press for ticket'? Once, I couldn't work out how to pay for my parking. Asked another motorist -and he couldn't either. We both saw the parking 'warden' enter the car park to check cars, so asked him and...he couldn't work it out either. We had to leave notes on our cars instead. I've got lots of other stories like this about amazing automated payment machines but I'll leave it at that.

And lots more. But I'll calm down now!

24-hour rolling news broadcasts/constantly updated, cough 'news' websites DM I'm looking at you Anxiety fuel and encourages the worst of the gutter press desperation to fill the space with inanity and clickbait speculation.

all doing untold damage to young girls and women.

The over-scheduling and constant entertaining of children. Beginning with classes for babies and toddlers, continuing with supervised activities for older children every day of the week. Children need unstructured time to play on their own and develop independence appropriately. I think modern childhood must be absolutely suffocating for so many children and damaging in both the short and long term.

My car has a USB port so I can still attach an MP3 player to it to play music!

I don't understand Instagram stories. What's the point of all that effort "curating" a story which will disappear in 24 hours? Posts I can understand as they stay until/unless you delete them. I find stories really irritating.

Sports coaches tend to use messaging apps or email. No need for a special "football" app or "athletics" app. Just use whatever everyone else uses to communicate.

And generally the idea that it's ok to make loads of noise these days. As I've said on here quite a few times, noise pollution is very damaging to health.

I also don't understand how only having apps as the only payment methods for car parks complies with the Equality Act.

The need to own a dog and take it to the pub, cafe, restaurant - everywhere, and have it sit on my lap, or sit on my chair, whilst i stand or sit on the floor, take photos and share them via social media. Alternatively let the dog lie flat out on on the floor, whilst everyone else trips over it or gets bitten when passing by.

Dogs have always gone to the pub. Always.

Absolutely and also supermarket apps where you get a discount.

No discount for customers with no smartphone wrong

Agreed. Also with @CulturePigeon and @certainshepherdpups

The forced activities of childhood spills into adulthood. It seems that it’s impossible to do any normal activity in my town without joining a group to do it. There’s packs of people running, walking, cycling, cooking, foraging and even “ A stroll through town” group.
God forbid you could ever be alone. I love when I bump into just one normal dog walker, enjoying being out (without a ton of tech timing their heart rate, steps, calories etc , headphones in looking determined).

Sorry I realise I sound like a twat but I’m not a fan of pack mentalities.

onlythreenow · 19/06/2022 21:35

Gee, I wonder how sports coaches managed for the years before we had apps!

They weren't expected to be available in that position 24-7 nor all their responsibiliies outside of the role that the advance of technology requires

Why is a child/teen sports coach required to be available 24/7?

You paid bills when they came in

Struggling to understand this one???

You dealt with work stuff 9-5

I live in a rural area, farmers have never worked 9-5

Just want to say: thank you for this thread, OP! Can really relate to the PPs here and in a world that feels so heavily reliant on social media and technology, it's nice to know I'm not the only one. When I have children some day, my partner and I have already agreed to not post photos of them on social media/the internet and will ask family and friends not to. We don't think badly of anyone who does but we would want to protect their privacy as much as possible until they're old enough to use social media themselves.

I've always been careful what photos I post of others and ask their permission first. An old work colleague of mine posted an ugly photo of me eating on lunch break once and I felt so embarrassed. She did delete it when I asked her to but it's freaky that people can just post photos and videos of you anywhere online and you have no control over that and they can refuse to remove it.

I do cringe when parents post you've-been-framed type videos and photos their children would feel embarrassed for people to see when they're older...
