For me, it was my mobile phone and apps.

I felt like I couldn't get away from notifications, the beeping, bopping and hopping of my phone drove me mad.

The blurring of life between work and home. Emails pinging off everywhere, people thinking they can ask you a work question on WhatsApp on your day off.

Wish these could be scheduled.

Having to do other peoples jobs. - fill out your childrens vaccine forms to save them inputting the details themselves. Print your own boarding passes, take your X-ray disc to the dentist so they don't have to post it. Get your no claims cert from your previous insurers and hand it to the new one. Download an app and pay for parking online so no one has to empty a meter. All stuff that was done as part of a service previously.

Remember when your tickets were sent to you in the post and they had matching luggage tags?
Remember when you sat at the doctors and they asked to you the questions personally?

You don't have to print boarding passes or check in online. You can still turn up at tge Airport and they do it at the desk.

I think my life is better because I have never been on Facebook, snapchat, Instagram or Twitter. Neither has dh. We have smartphones, use some apps, but that whole SM thing seems crazy - from things I see (like BIL showing me fb posts from cousins etc), a lot of it is very very filtered. Don't use Alexa either.

Disneydatknee88 · 18/06/2022 21:54

Constant adverts. Sure, we can skip them on telly but now they are everywhere else. The adds on social media are so much worse because they are tailored to what the Internet thinks they know about you. It always reminds me of that futurama episode where they start showing adverts in your dreams. It was such a ludicrous idea at the time but give it another 50 years. To be more specific adverts on "free" apps can do one. I'm so sick of seeing the same ones over and over again.

fghj149 · 18/06/2022 21:55

Social media 100% - it’s changed things for the worse so much and can’t imagine the damage it’s doing to teens. Came off it two years ago never looked back. Wish everyone would!

mnahmnah · 18/06/2022 21:58

A dishwasher

Grew up with one. Had one myself years ago. Chose not to get one in new house. You still have to stack and unload it. Prolongs the process. Takes up space. Only set it off when full so you find things are dirty when you need them. Much easier to just wash what you use straight away.

thelastshadowpuppet · 18/06/2022 22:05

Social media is the devil imo. I logged out of Facebook, couldn't remember the password to log back in, not a bit bothered.

It's the gazillions of passwords we need these day, fries my brain.

My daughter's football coach asked me to download an app and I told her I don't do apps so anytime she needed to tell me something she'd pull me to one side.

So many things. All social media apps, Uber/Lyft/Bolt and whatever else they are called, fillers, botox, plastic gardens...

Fulbe · 18/06/2022 22:38

@thelastshadowpuppet you can set your web browser to remember all your passwords, then have just one (very secure) master password for the browser. It means you can have complicated and secure passwords for everything and you don't have to type them in every time. I know this thread is about moving away from technology but this has saved my life!

CuppaTeaAndSammich · 18/06/2022 22:47

I was born 1992 but I often think I should've been born decades earlier as many modern aspects of life today just don't suit me and find myself wishing the following don't exist:

The internet - as useful as it can be, is full of some pretty messed up s**t which kids seem to have easy access to!
Social media
Smart phones - as pp have said, everything needs an app these days and you no longer get membership/clubcards, just a barcode on your app (damn it, M&S)
Botox, lip fillers, other cosmetic surgeries
Photoshop
Ultra white and straight teeth
Everything wrapped in PLASTIC and now there is a desperate need to cut it out

I could go on......

StarDolphins · 18/06/2022 22:54

I’m sticking 2 fingers up to the complete lack of individuality these days, society telling us what we can laugh at, what we can’t laugh at. i’m also sick of everyone being offended, everyone apologising for their views. I also do t like that people feel they have to all look the same, ridiculous lips, too much caked on make up all in the same style, big heavy eyelashes and god awful brows!

Jellykat · 18/06/2022 22:56

Agree with Alexa, Social media (Facebook, twitter etc), Apps for everything..
I dont have/ do any of them.

Another one i hate is Electric cars, i cant hear the buggers when i'm walking (i live rurally) theyre so quiet and therefore bloody dangerous!

Social media.

I'm not on Facebook, Instagram etc and have no interest in being on them.

I'm only in my 30s but just have no interest in being on them.

This.

I used to have social media accounts but deleted most of them, and don't go on them anymore anyway. Much better for my mental health as well.

Can't deal with the constant scrolling of updates/statuses/photos. It's amazing how much time you can waste on there. I have friends who can't go a few minutes without watching instagram stories.

AnnunciataCoquetti · 18/06/2022 20:43

@thelastshadowpuppet It's not quite sticking two fingers up, but I have steadfastly avoided smartphones, ipads, etc. I have the same mobile phone I've had since the 90s (indestructible Nokia which really is the size of a brick). Anyone who wants to speak to me can ring me on my home phone. I am using the same imac as I was when I joined MN in 2004.

Impressed! I am always impressed that people have not confined but all the school groups, info is on social media and I feel I have no choice
I would love to go live somewhere remote where the option is taken away!

Queuing
Social media
Make up

I agree with the last two but isn’t queuing just part of living in a civilised society?

chipsarnie · 18/06/2022 23:41

I am done with being polite to cold callers, at the door or on the phone. A modern plague.

You get me up off the sofa to answer the door or interrupt my playlist when I'm out for a run, you better have a bloody good reason.

mokololo · 18/06/2022 23:55

Social media, makeup, celebrities, phones, the news.

I'm not against modernity - I work in tech. But I cannot be arsed with modern mass culture. A strange world of shouty clowns, with unsettling, mask-like faces... and people on places like Twitter seem genuinely mentally ill. All of it makes me feel bad, and also profoundly bored. I watch movies, read books, and make my own things instead.

mrsmacmc · 19/06/2022 00:08

The 'always on' culture. I vividly remember the first weekend of lockdown 1 standing out the back and could hear the birds chirping etc as there was no other noise e.g traffic / planes etc. reminded me of Sundays from my childhood when the world 'stopped' for a day.

Whatup · 19/06/2022 00:34

I like apps but they dont work unless you have amazing internet which no one has at a supermarket queue and no phone has enough memory for all of them.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 19/06/2022 06:20

Nobody just grinning cheerfully to have their photo taken by someone else any more. Always a stupid pose with their phone visible or some brainless pouting. Including young girls thinking pouting is what you do in a photo.

User4387075 · 19/06/2022 06:42

Selfies, never took one ever. Not on Twitter, Facebook IG or WhatsApp

User4387075 · 19/06/2022 06:51

I print off the Waitrose offers from my desktop computer and present an A4 sheet in the shop, the internet never works properly in there anyway to do it online, I don't use apps much anyway they are generally useless. So Waitrose are encouraging me to use lots of paper.

SnotsGotTheBoobies · 18/06/2022 20:42

I don’t like it that you can’t just turn up to anywhere anymore without notice! 🙄
i fucking hate the fact that you have to plan your weekend in advance! I want to have the option to be spontaneous! I don’t know now what we will all want to do next weekend! It’s pathetic that everywhere is still clinging to the “covid” excuse. Really annoys me!

Yep same here!

Onlyforcake · 19/06/2022 07:07

Make up, filters, surgery, SM, oversharing, the vanity of modern life. You can't polish a turd as my mum told me. Firmly of the belief noone would benefit or want me to try.

Ylvamoon · 19/06/2022 07:07
  1. Social media 99.99% is just BS!
  2. the beauty industry - from botox to teeth whitening and concealers
  3. our quick throw away culture - from fashion to food packaging and must have plastic tat

And of course the attitudes and entitlement that comes with it!
