I was told I can’t speak English

And no one can understand me while I wax at work.

I speak clearly and use correct English phrasing and terms.

is it discriminatory?

OP posts:
SandyWedges · 18/06/2022 06:41

I think it depends on the context and exact phrasing

Maisa45 · 18/06/2022 06:41

newnamethanks · 18/06/2022 06:37

The first time I heard someone speak with a heavy Glaswegian accent I couldn't understand a word. I knew he was speaking English as the person he was speaking to understood and answered in English. I was young and from the South, since then I've attuned myself to it. So, not necessarily an insult to you. I hope not.

Oh I find strong Scottish accents harder to understand than any foreign accent! I once answered the phone at work to a lady with such a strong Glaswegian accent I literally could not understand a single word. Thankfully we had a Scottish guy working in our office at time who took the call 😂

DropYourSword · 18/06/2022 01:03

I think that says more about you to be fair.
Even with typos it's still perfectly obvious what the OP is saying.
Pearl clutchers who pretend they simply can't understand something unless it's written in perfect English are as boring as they are ridiculous

I agree with you, it is tedious when people pretend they can't understand when it's not perfect!!

however, in this case, I genuinely don't have a fucking clue what she's on about, so maybe you could explain?

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 18/06/2022 07:11

@DropYourSword Thank you. I agree entirely. I honestly wonder how some people are able to engage in everyday life when they require such high levels of precision and certainty.

speakout · 18/06/2022 07:20

We can't say whether the OP has a problem or not from her posts.

I do understand what it is like not being understood though. I am scottish and when I was young had a vrey broad accent, lots of slang, regional words. I visited London and struggled to make myself understood- it was an eye opener.
I deliberately changed the way I talked to modify and improve communication. I now have a way of talking that is more like Sean Connory than Ralph C Nesbit.

MilkWasABadChoice · 18/06/2022 07:26

Since she hasn’t returned, let’s all just assume the OP can* speak good English.

*can, meaning either “is able” or “ is not able”, according to your own preference

ChairPose9to5 · 18/06/2022 07:28

I'm going off topic here but I think Glaswegian English is nearly as different as say Swedish is from Norwegian. You don't think they sit there saying:
You are unintelligible to us
No, you are unintelligible to us!
Because it's accepted there are differences.

I'm Irish and I found I got the most ''what?'' in new york of all places. I just couldn't get to the top of a queue and say ''tomato and cheese on brown bread with mayo'' without having to repeat it several times. Baffling. I speak so clearly. Never had that problem in English. They just said ''ok''. Never had any problems being understood in the UK, but in New York, I contemplated doing the ny accent. I would have murdered it but it would have been in the right 'gear' - they would have caught what I was saying.

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2022 07:28

Sometimes it’s not about the grammar or accent it’s about the enunciation. I had a training session and the trainer seemed to swallow his words making it really difficult to follow. We’ve also added in extra layers of complication with Perspex screens and masks muffling everything.

pantjog · 18/06/2022 07:28

@yzed how can anyone be being racist when no one has a clue what race the OP is? Don’t be daft! Rude, impatient, intolerant, maybe… but not racist.

PAFMO · 18/06/2022 07:30

pantjog · 18/06/2022 00:57

Please translate @FlissyPaps.I genuinely don’t understand what the OP means.

Then you need to look into getting some help with your comprehension skills. Is English not your first language?

sst1234 · 18/06/2022 07:35

WhackingPhoenix · 18/06/2022 01:11

Gosh, lot of bigots in here tonight! I can understand you fine, OP.

Do translate for the rest of us with your superior comprehension powers, then.

ChairPose9to5 · 18/06/2022 07:35

If a Spanish person is murdering English I still catch a lot because I learnt Spanish for 6 years and then kept it up. Same with French, learnt that for 10 years but didn't keep it up. I can ''fill in the gaps''. If a Spanish person tells me they want to invite me, I know they mean they want to treat me. I know that enyoy is Enjoy!

With the best will in the world, if a Chinese person is talking to me and their English isn't great, I don't have the same BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE to fill in the gaps.

GoodThinkingMax · 18/06/2022 07:36

And no one can understand me while I wax at work.

Well, if your OP is an example of your speech patterns word choice and grammar ….

pantjog · 18/06/2022 07:40

@PAFMO plenty of people on the thread struggled to understand what the OP meant and as he/she hasn’t been back to clarify, we have no way of knowing if the “translation” offered was correct.

But maybe you’re doling out the sort of insult that the OP was subject to? How deliciously ironic!

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/06/2022 07:41

Your employer was rude and your clients are even ruder.

I'm sure with a patience they could understand you.

Sswhinesthebest · 18/06/2022 07:50

I think peoples different interpretations of the beautician bit, shows that’s peoples minds work differently.

Often on threads, people seem confused and I think, FGS it’s really clear, but I have to say that on this one, whilst I can make a guess and have perhaps got my take on the gist of what the op is saying, it is a bit confusing.

Sorry op.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 18/06/2022 07:53

And no one can understand me while I wax was at work.

I speak clearly and use correct English phrasing and terms.

is it discriminatory?

It is rude IMO.

I am as uneducated as you get on MN left school young due to severe complications with attention span.

Changing x for s.

OP 2nd post clarified the typo.

ChairPose9to5 · 18/06/2022 07:56

x is next to s on the key board so I knew that was 'was' not 'wax'

come on OP, come back and tell us where you're from? I know you can never prove that you're easy to understand. In this format of course!

PuppyMonkey · 18/06/2022 07:57

Who said anything about OP having clients?

Sswhinesthebest · 18/06/2022 08:00

And no one can understand me while I wax at work.

Its not just the typo here, it’s the combination of the typo and the change in tense from present to past.

Just little things but they could have been politer in saying they get a bit confused over what you are saying. I couldn’t speak a different language op, so be proud.

MaryBeardsShoes · 18/06/2022 08:00

I read it as OP is not allowed to speak English, at first. Not that she can’t.

AllHailKingLouis · 18/06/2022 08:02

No idea what you’re on about here OP so they may have a point.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2022 08:03

'wax' was clearly a typo for 'was' and pp abusing the Op for this are being dicks.

Trifecta · 18/06/2022 08:03

Are you trying to be a comedian?

girlmom21 · 18/06/2022 08:04

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2022 08:03

'wax' was clearly a typo for 'was' and pp abusing the Op for this are being dicks.

To be fair it wasn't clearly a typo until she said it was a typo.
