And no one can understand me while I wax at work.

I speak clearly and use correct English phrasing and terms.

is it discriminatory?

Without a bit more context no one can say really but it sounds a bit mean.

luxxlisbon · 17/06/2022 22:54

Who said it and why?
Do you feel like people struggle to understand you?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 17/06/2022 22:54

Do you have a very strong accent?

If people genuinely can't understand you, I'm not sure how it is discrimantory.

ChairPose9to5 · 17/06/2022 22:55

Yeh, I have been guilty of not understanding people speak english as a second or third language sometimes. not intending to be an arse. I usually get it after I've asked for a repeat.

Momicrone · 17/06/2022 22:55

Why are you waxing at work?

Yoloohno · 17/06/2022 22:57

Bloody hell talk about a typo making me look like I can speak English.

Beauty therapist?
Love an accent.

Yoloohno · 17/06/2022 22:58

Did I ever say I weren’t a beautician 😂

Ok not a beauty therapist🤣🤣

Momicrone · 17/06/2022 22:59

So you are actually waxing as opposed to waxing lyrical

luxxlisbon · 17/06/2022 22:59

Honestly even your posts are hard to work out so maybe they have a point.

LicoricePizza · 17/06/2022 23:02

Sorry OP but this post is doing you no favours communicating either! More context needed to be able to fully say!

springbreak22 · 17/06/2022 23:02

Friday night wine?

MistyRuins · 17/06/2022 23:03

It might or might not be discriminatory.

I've worked with people from many countries. Some are very easy to understand, some, it takes time to get attuned to their accent - and often, surprisingly, it's the ones that have very very good English, because they talk faster.

If it was said genuinely because someone is struggling to understand, I would say it's not discriminatory. I've had that myself, as a British person, because I'm from a place with a very distinct but not well known accent.

But it's possible that they have said it because they want to put you down because they are a bigot. In which case it would be, imo, discriminatory.

Pastaa · 17/06/2022 23:07

I don't understand what the typo was? That you're not a waxer?

MistyRuins · 17/06/2022 23:09

I thought the typo might be 'was' not 'wax'.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/06/2022 23:11

What's your first language OP or is this a regional accent thing?

UndertheCedartree · 17/06/2022 23:15

Sometimes I have had friends from another country say words and I really couldn't understand them. They were using correct words it was just their accent and once I'd worked out what they were saying I felt bad that I couldn't understand it as they must have thought why doesn't she understand when I am saying it correctly. But my brain just couldn't understand the word even though they were saying it so close to the correct pronunciation. My dad always complains he speaks the language where he lives correctly and noone can understand him! But I'm sure it's just his English accent.

Georgeskitchen · 17/06/2022 23:22

More context needed. Were you born in the UK?
Is english your first language?
Why We're you waxing if you're not a beauty therapist?

Your subsequent post demonstrate that you dont speak correct English

still struggling to understand your issue

Ottersmith · 17/06/2022 23:28

Well you are certainly a person of few words.

mackthepony · 17/06/2022 23:34

Someone once said to me, what language is that?? In Canada. I'm from Lancashire

FlissyPaps · 17/06/2022 23:36
  1. Are you from the UK. If so, what would you describe your accent as? If not, what country are you from?

  2. Your place of work - does everyone have the same accent as you/from the same area.

It will be discriminatory if your colleagues are treating you unfairly if it relates to a protected characteristic (race, age, sex, disability, marital status, religion). Do you think this is the case in your scenario?

Pinklimey · 17/06/2022 23:38

Did you say Lancastrian?
