Surely dog barking annoys the owners too?

Standard stuff for summer - doors and windows all open, live on an estate etc Lots of dog barking. Not RSPCA worthy barking just on / off all evening.

Do dog owners just tune it out?

Neighbours are in the garden with dogs on either side in the garden with them barking and don't even stop their conversations or sigh in an irritated fashion that I would have thought or tell them off etc (gardens very close, I can hear everything at the moment) - do you just not hear it if you own dogs or maybe barking noise doesn't bother dog owners in the same way?

I don’t allow barking in the garden. If the dogs don’t quiet when I tell them then they get put inside. I’m not horrible and obviously consider why they’re barking ie pup wants to play but older dog doesn’t. However, older one inside and I play with pup.
Nobody wants to listen to lots of barking. It’s a bit like children whining, don’t just ignore them, address the issue.

I’m with PP I don’t allow my dogs to bark outside (or inside for that matter). If they bark, they are bought inside. We are lucky in that they don’t bark very often at all, it’s very specific circumstances that they bark during and we are luckily able to avoid them most of the time!

Our girl dog is terrible for muttering and grumbling away, it’s quiet so can’t bother the neighbours but it drives me nuts 😂I frequently tell her she’s lucky she has some redeeming qualities as I don’t “do” noise 😁

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 17/06/2022 20:15

I'm hearing this low level barking all the time now.
It's constant but no one deals with it.

It upsets me actually because the barking is attention barking.
Lots of whining too.

I'm minded to think that they're lockdown dogs as I've never heard it before. Only the occasional bark to be let in or a quick bark with a neighbouring dog.

So sad.

Sammysquiz · 17/06/2022 20:15

Yeah, I wonder this. In our area there’s always dogs yapping on and on, so bloody annoying.

MissDollyMix · 17/06/2022 20:17

I am a dog owner and the sound of barking absolutely goes through me!! I can’t stand it. I’m much less tolerant of it than my non-dog owning friends. My dogs are immediately silenced if they bark. Wish I could say the same for my neighbours dogs!!

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/06/2022 20:17

My dog is brought inside if he barks, I think that's pretty standard for any decent owner.

seaUrchinOne · 17/06/2022 20:20

If only they did take their dogs in when barking, unfortunately a lot people don't seem to care that everyone else has to listen to it.
I once sold my house for this very reason

mummabubs · 17/06/2022 20:22

I'm a dog owner. I'm currently sat listening to a dog two houses down that's been barking on and off for the last hour. If it wakes my two young children I'm half tempted to walk to the neighbour and demand that they put my kids back to sleep again. It's such shitty owner etiquette to allow your dog to bark all the time. The owners are literally ignoring theirs, we recognised with our dog that the barking was a communication and we worked to meet our dog's need and eliminated the barking.

Mizydoscape · 17/06/2022 20:26

There is a post on our local Facebook group at the moment about people letting their dogs in the garden very late at night and early in the morning and letting them bark loads. There are as many people commenting that "that's what dogs do" and "OP should get a grip" as there are people who agree that it's unreasonable. It's those selfish, entitled people that don't see the problem and don't give a shit about anyone else that are doing it.

theemmadilemma · 17/06/2022 20:30

2 dogs here, I cannot tune it out, I'm on it the second they start. Ours are often quiet while we listen to the barking spread slowly around us as all the other dogs join a chorus!!

Yes, mine get warned, then it's in. We're detached so I'd rather keep it inside and away if they can't be quiet.

OhmygodDont · 17/06/2022 20:33

I think they zone it out or don’t think it’s that loud.

we have a massive recreational area behind our house and for an hour solid I heard a yappy yappy dog. I was looking out the windows looking for a lost dog by the end. But no it was on a lead with its owners giving no fucks that it had been yapping for an hour behind our houses.

Wiiiiiiilllllsssssonnnnnn · 17/06/2022 20:34

I don’t think owners hear it, I think they’ve zoned out. It’s like when you’re in a cafe and there’s kids being rowdy on the next table, but the parents just don’t seem to hear it.

TooBored1 · 17/06/2022 20:37

Yes, that's why we don't allow it. A bit of play barking while she's playing with the kids (max 10 minutes) but certainly not barking for the sake of it/ at next door's cat/ plane overhead.

peanutbutterjellysandwich · 17/06/2022 20:37

Gah i hear you op! It’s like that scene in 101 dalamations in my close, one dog barks and sets another neighbours then the other neighbours then some random dog down the road behind infuriating!!

NachosForDinner · 17/06/2022 20:37

The house opposite ours has a dog that endlessly barks. She is a rescue dog with 3 legs after being hit by a car, she is anxious.

they still let her stand in the garden barking at cars, it’s sad and we put up with it because we know her history but, I’d take her inside and redirect the anxiety if she was mine.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 17/06/2022 20:37

It's the thing that annoys me the most about my yappy pair. It goes through me like a pp said but I'm not very noise tolerant. I am constantly telling them to shush but they don't always do as they are told

Notanotherwindow · 17/06/2022 20:39

I don't let mine bark, they'd do my head in. A couple of woofs to let me know someone is about is fine but barking their heads off because someone 3 streets away dared to come out of their own house isn't on.

Titterofwit · 17/06/2022 20:43

I almost started my own thread about this. NDNs yappy dog has been out all day while they set up and hosted a childs bouncy castle party .
It has not shut up once.
Its louder/more piercing than a whole party of children let loose with copious amounts of sweets ad a free bouncy castle.
Im not surprised though as the owner thinks its lovely how he 'talks' to the squirrels. She doesnt sleep well and lets him out all all times during the night so yapyapyapyapyapyap at 2am is not joyful to me. I think she has a cigarette at the same time so doesnt even stay inside and ignore him. She never tells him to stop .😟

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/06/2022 20:45

Two doors down, the poor creature barks/howls all day. They’re out and don’t care.
Doesn’t irritate me now, I’m past that, just feel incredibly sad for the poor animal.

EndHarrasmentofwomen · 17/06/2022 20:51

My neighbour talks to her dogs like a drip, and doesn’t think the fact that they keep escaping from the garden is a problem, I heard her asking her boyfriend if they was running away from her care because the dogs don’t love her enough, as if they did, they wouldn’t do that… woman in her late 40s who works as a professional I kid you not!!!

No mate your dogs are bored as you don’t walk them just leave them in the back garden. thankfully your boyfriend is normal as I heard his answer and can see he is now finally giving some well needed boundaries and discipline to your dogs!!

some people are just clueless about their dogs

Dobbysgotthesocks · 17/06/2022 20:52

I've got a barker and yes it's bloody irritating. She barks when she's happy, when she's excited, cross, scared, wants something. Her mo is to bark. It's really tricky to train out once the habit develops and as she's a rescue she had lots of time to develop nots is great habits before she arrived.
I stop her as quickly as I can but it isn't always easy. And in the hot weather with the windows open and more noises for her to hear it's even harder!

What I'm trying to say is not all owners with dogs that bark are bad owners. We try but it isn't always possible to keep them quiet. Nobody enjoys listening to them bark!

CourtneeLuv · 17/06/2022 20:57

I don't let mine bark, it annoys me but then I don't like telling them off because I want them to bark at burglars. But I do because I don't want to listen to it.

phoneybaloney · 17/06/2022 21:01

I think it's like parents who have very whingy/loud kids, its just normal noise to them and they're either totally oblivious or tune it out.

KnottyKnitting · 17/06/2022 21:07

Our dog was always swiftly brought in if she barked. Next door but one neighbour- not so much... ( she also used to take to dog out for a walk before work at 6:30am and it used to bark excitedly as they left the house- every. bloody. day!!! ) 😡

Am currently on holiday and the people in the apartment next door have two yappy little yorkies who they leave for hours on end while they go to the beach/ bar/ out for dinner. Driving me nuts!
