Surely dog barking annoys the owners too?

Standard stuff for summer - doors and windows all open, live on an estate etc Lots of dog barking. Not RSPCA worthy barking just on / off all evening.

Do dog owners just tune it out?

Neighbours are in the garden with dogs on either side in the garden with them barking and don't even stop their conversations or sigh in an irritated fashion that I would have thought or tell them off etc (gardens very close, I can hear everything at the moment) - do you just not hear it if you own dogs or maybe barking noise doesn't bother dog owners in the same way?

I was sitting out in the sun a couple of days ago and there was a dog barking non-stop about 120 - 150 yards away. It literally went on for over an hour. It was with it's owner.
A couple of other people near by were commenting too.

Branster · 17/06/2022 21:18

Life ling dog owner here and I adore dogs. But I cannot stand this!
I don't mind the odd bark, as I assume visitors.
But the constant yapping and barking drives me crazy.
I know 5 individual cases around here: 2 dogs bark when the house is empty, absolutely constant, no break, until owners return. Worse in warm weather when windows left open.
The other 3 bark when left alone out in the garden - owners actually in the house with door closed on most occasions.
I blame the owners 100%
And these are not next door as properties are reasonably far away.
Most irritating and I feel sorry for the dogs.

I’ve got 2 little barkers. It drives me absolutely mental. They bark if the trees blow, if someone walks past the house, if you put a spoon down on the side and it clinks. We’ve had so many trainers and behaviourists and nothing anyone has suggested works. The older dog never barked before we got the younger one. We had a dog for 11 years before these two and he rarely barked, if he did it was always for a reason.

we don’t let them bark outside though. They’re brought in.

indoorplantqueen · 17/06/2022 21:25

My dog barking annoys me. I know he'll do it for 10 seconds at 8am when he's let out first thing (there's usually a squirrel or bird in the garden). If he doesn't stop after 10 seconds he's brought in. Same as any other time in the day.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 17/06/2022 21:40

@Dobbysgotthesocks

Have you thought of training it?

My dog is brought inside if he barks, I think that's pretty standard for any decent owner.

I must be surrounded by crappy owners then!

There's often barking at 6am on and off for ages - I can't believe owners want to listen to it any more than I do!

Sorry everyone else is suffering - it's shit isn't it. Don't remember being like this when I was growing up!

Our NDN's over the road have got some sort of bloody mutant bulldog/bully XL cross, and it has the most horrendous deep bark. Every morning at 7am, they let it out then go and have a shower. The dog barks the entire time that they're in it Hmm I honestly can't believe that they do it, tbh. If mine ever bark, they're brought straight in at speed and I stand outside with them to make sure.

FailedFledge · 17/06/2022 22:29

Yes it bothers us, we try to fetch them in when they start up outside, but rounding up hyperactive dogs can take a minute sometimes.

Sadly for us though two of our three are conversationalists. They like to bark a lot, very loudly until we feed them/walk them/fuss over them/let them out/because my dad's out/because it's bedtime/because the neighbour's dogs are out/to hear their own voices/because it's biscuit time/because the phone rang...

It cannot be ignored.

OhIKnow · 17/06/2022 22:30

My dog barking drives me nuts. He barks at the birds that sit on our roof or have the temerity to fly over our no fly zone garden. He gets brought in every time he does it but it's annoying!

@Dobbysgotthesocks

Have you thought of training it?

Yes thank you!!! We have done extensive amounts of training with behaviourists for more than 18 months!

People who don't have reactive dogs haven't got a clue how tricky it is to rehabilitate traumatised dogs.

MyWorstIsGoodEnough · 17/06/2022 22:37

One of our dog barks a lot. She’s got a bit better with training but I think she’s always going to bark a lot. Our other dogs are very quiet. We’ve just got used to it.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 17/06/2022 22:39

I’ve been listening to loud barking/howling for the past hour. I want to sleep, I’m getting up for work at 6am. Too hot to close the window, going to find some ear plugs…

mac1974 · 17/06/2022 22:48

I'm a dog owner. My dog drives me crackers when he barks. He's a Cavapoochon and everytime he sees a bird he barks. I do my best to stop him.

Duettino · 17/06/2022 22:59

I can't stand the sound of dogs barking, neither can DP so as soon as DDog does, he is told to stop.

My DM on the other hand seems to have tuned it out and I often hear them in the background and get her to stop them but they don't have urgency to. MIL openly says she tunes it out but they only bark when someone knocks and they're set off like dominos. At least she has the decency to live in a detached house.

QuidditchThroughtheAges · 17/06/2022 23:03

My dog used to bark ALL THE FUCKING TIME I rescued him from my mum who didn't manage his behaviour at all, she was unwell (I didn't realise the extent) and she wasn't walking him or letting him out of the kitchen.

His first month with us he was a total nightmare barking at the cats, barking at the birds, the grass moving, people in their gardens.

We were training him to stop by giving him treats when he didn't bark and then a cat came in the garden, and I panicked and turned the hose on him as he was barking and lunging for the cat (never would have managed he's a corgi x Labrador) and he got totally soaked.

Never barked at anything again. Also hates the hose but small mercies!

Morenamesandpasswords · 17/06/2022 23:08

We currently have a complaint with the council about a neighbours dog.

during the week it’s turned out around 7am and it barks constantly and whines to go in all day until the kids get home.

then the kids get home and they wind it up until bedtime

and at weekend, they wind it up all day.

if it’s left in the house, it barks and whines to get out

it basically barks from 7am to 8pm seven days a week!

CharlotteSt · 17/06/2022 23:15

Two doors down had an incessantly yapping dog which they left outside. It was the subject of many a local Facebook rant. There was a heartfelt "over the rainbow bridge" message from the owner last week. You could hear the cheers from three roads away 😂

MushyPeasPrincess · 17/06/2022 23:17

Dog owner here with a fortunately non barky dog.

Relatives have neighbours across the road and down a bit with a yappy little mutt, it arrived in lockdown. I think it's a dachshund cross with rat of some type. Screechy anyway.

Now the neighbours have both returned to work, they just leave it in the garden ALL day where it barks non stop at every person, dog or van going past their fence, on a fairly busy estate and their road is on the main run to the primary school.

Relatives have been told that they have been reported a few times by the closer neighbours to dog warden, council etc but so far it doesn't seem to have had any effect as it's still out there every single day.

Relative thinking of renting a desk in an office space just to get some peace during the day from the yap yap yap.

Maverickess · 17/06/2022 23:19

I have a breed that's typically known for being yappy, but she's not, the only time she was was after the older dog died for a short while and she seemed anxious at being the only dog, a year on she's settled again now.
That's not to say she doesn't bark because she does if the door goes, or barks back at other dogs barking when in the garden, she'll be quiet when told, well almost, there's some soft grumbling and whining which I take as her wanting to bark, but knowing she'll be brought in and told to go to her bed if she doesn't shut it. I've just not allowed it to become a thing from a puppy because it pisses me off too.
The old dog was to put it plainly, a gobshite. A rescue who got better when brought in/redirected after a while, but I never eliminated it completely.
She got to the point where she knew that barking meant she had to come in and go in her bed and so would bark at the gate, then without me saying anything, would turn and walk back in the house, still barking over her shoulder as she went 🤦it was so bloody annoying and I tried really hard to stop her, funnily enough the younger dog never joined in when older daughter barked at bugger all, but now joins in with other neighborhood dogs.
Most round here quiet their dogs when they start, except one who will try and carry on a conversation with you over the noise so 4 dogs barking their heads off, I don't know how it doesn't drive her mad!

LadyApplejack · 17/06/2022 23:32

Great question! Our neighbours allow their little yap-machine to go on and on at seemingly nothing, sometimes early on a weekend. Goes especially mad if we make a sound near the boundary (bins etc).

Nice people, but actually not that nice or they wouldn't subject everyone else to that horrible noise.

teaandtoastplease · 17/06/2022 23:42

My next door neighbour has small breed very yappy dogs. They seem to tune it out and don't tell them to stop. They just talk louder and they're already loud talkers. It was driving me nuts for a while but then it became like background noise ( like if you live on a busy road you stop noticing the cars)

However, we recently became a foster home for a large breed dog and the yapping is so much worse. Our dog doesn't react to them at all and if she does bark for any reason she is brought straight back inside. She doesn't really go outside much though. Overhead the neighbour on the phone a couple of days ago calling me all the names under the sun because her dogs are trampling in her flower beds and barking because our dog is in our garden, and that they're going to have to put a fence up to keep them out of the plants. Really wound me up because it's not my dog causing the issues they're having. They need to train their dogs.

So now the yapping is driving me nuts again. I just think for gods sake tell them to stop or put them indoors. Saying that though we can hear their yapping indoors too, and their tv/music over our own telly. Basically they're arseholes.

Mabelface · 18/06/2022 10:30

There's one just over the back of mine that drives everyone insane. I go out and shout at it to shut up. Neighbour is starting to get the hint.

DogsAreSuperior · 18/06/2022 22:00

One of our dogs barks lots. Nothing stops her if she decides something is worth barking at. It can be annoying. 🤣

StoneofDestiny · 18/06/2022 22:43

Totally anti social to permit a dog to bark outside and disturb others.
