Hi All.
Quick question..is anyone sat outside today in this glorious weather actually enjoying themselves? It is purgatory here! I started by sitting in my garden, kids at school complete peace and quiet with a cuppa and a book delirously content and happily minding my own business then all hell breaks loose. Next door get out the hedge trimmer and lawn mower.Marvelous,Then next door the other way decide to strim their garden. Those behind us have a tree surgeon in and omg I swear my ears could bleed,There is a radio playing loudly somewhere and I give in. I had 20 mins and 5 hrs later its all still going on, In a dramatic turn I slammed my door went inside and threw a tantrum with myself! Add to this joyous morning himself who is on the last 12 hr night shift of a 60 hr week was woken up with little sleep and has a gob on him like no ones business but to be fair I cannot blame him. If you are enjoying your garden today cos I am not I hope you are enjoying it!!! Aibu to just want a rant?

Move to Edinburgh, 17 degrees and raining here😩

FuzzyPuffling · 17/06/2022 15:27

I hate my neighbours and would gladly put the radio on (facing their direction) but the bastards have gone out. I'm really cross.

bigbluebus · 17/06/2022 15:42

I was looking forward to a quiet day in the garden whilst all the neighbours were at work and children at school. But it was shortlived when I discovered that 'noisy neighbour' had left the dog home alone and it whined and barked for the entire morning. Then they all arrived home around 2pm and have made numerous phone calls on speaker phone in the garden, pumped up the paddling pool and generally yelled to each other (they don't know how to talk). Since they got back from the school run their car alarm has gone off at least 4 times. The only saving grace is that they're not (currently) playing music - something else we usually have to endure! We have 4 other lots of neighbours (some with dogs and children) who are like church mice compared to these neighbours!

Never mind - tomorrow it will be raining!

SpiceRat · 17/06/2022 15:46

I’d take just noise over my lovely neighbour deciding this week, after months of high piles of bricks blocking the path, this is the week he is finally going to lay his driveway. Cue cutting bricks and dust absolutely everywhere and coming right in the windows. Trying to keep 20 month old cool with fans. Absolute twat. Will be sending him a bill for getting the car cleaned too.

creamwitheverything · 17/06/2022 16:01

It gets worse...they have lit a bonfire to burn the hedge trimmings...in comes my washing and running around like a mad woman closing all windows, FFS I have really seen my arse today!! I was unreasonable earlier but now I could if pushed slightly loose my rag....ugh

I’m listening to the birdsong, can hear neighbourhood children playing and the breeze in the trees. Read a novel, ate a magnum, and all’s pretty good in my world

bigbluebus · 17/06/2022 16:14

No one should be lighting a bonfire in this weather. Aim your hosepipe over the fence and put it out!

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 17/06/2022 16:15

I'm being treated to Happy Hardcore, yes actual Happy Hardcore from the 90s by my neighbours;. When i heard Shooting Star I was pleasently surprised to hear it but that was at 11am it's now 415 and he only seems to have the one album.

It got tedious really quickly and my kids are getting more wound up by it with every shouty man demanding we dance, jump, blow our whistle and put our hands in the air.

ManateeFair · 17/06/2022 16:21

Do you expect people to mow their lawns when it’s pissing down, then? Or is it just that the whole neighbourhood is meant to check with you first before doing any kind of garden maintenance? Maybe you expect them to cut their grass with a scythe?

YABU. You live in close proximity to other people. Sometimes you will hear evidence of their existence. Just like sometimes they will hear evidence of yours.

In an ideal world, I’d live in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours, but I don’t. So I don’t have a hissy fit when someone mows their lawn. I just crack on with reading my book and tune it out. It’s not like it’s going to take them all day.

Moonface123 · 17/06/2022 16:22

Mostly quiet here, can hear some kids playing in background which l like, the only problem l have here re noise nuisance is one set of bickering neighbours. l sit outside alot on my own, so can' t help but hear them it makes me grateful l don't have the joys of a controlling bossy husband, but it still gets wearing, and it gets worse if they' ve had a drink.

XelaM · 17/06/2022 16:27

Have been sitting in my garden (in the shade) all day working from home on my laptop. It's been quite nice

BlueBeeSpots · 17/06/2022 16:29

I’m stuck in between 2 neighbours who both take turns to blast music in to their gardens when it gets the slightest bit sunny. I hardly ever see them sat near the source of the music though. I don’t get why they do it, is it a dominance thing?

I wish I could choose to have nice and quiet neighbours! It seems I’m in the minority here.

If I had a super power I’d choose to have some electro magnetic pulse type power that fried peoples stereos through walls 😂 one can dream! For now it’s all windows closed while trying to ignore the rhythmic banging noise from the one on my left’s loud bass speaker.

Oh and they both smoke weed too which absolutely stinks so that’s another reason for keeping everything closed 🙄

Bring on the winter!

I think it's sad that the simple pleasure of enjoying sitting in the garden reading a book in relative quiet is out of reach for lots of us.

As someone else has said the only way to guarantee this is to be rich enough to afford a detached house with no neighbours close by.

Using a radio outside is especially antisocial, it's so easy to use headphones.

I don't have a radio it's an Alexa and it's not outside it's in my extension. I've currently got it on kids party hits, not loud. This is because next door have my kids, and next door but 1s kids as well as their own kids in their garden in the paddling pool.

They're all having a blast

Sunbird24 · 17/06/2022 16:31

I’ve just had to come indoors - was quite happily sitting outside in my swing chair with a book while next door’s kids were (fairly loudly) playing in their garden and splashing about in their pool, but then their dad came home and decided the entire street needs to listen to his shit music. There’s a reason both his next door neighbours have sold their houses…

TenoringBehind · 17/06/2022 16:36

I planned to spend an hour in the hammock reading but there’s so much building noise from the noise behind and the one across the road that it wasn’t possible.

TheNoonBell · 17/06/2022 16:44

Completely quiet here which is very unusual as normally the neighbours try to use every power tool they own at least once per day. The patio is like an oven so went and sat in the little copse of trees at the back. There is a nice breeze off the river which is taking the worst of the heat off.

Drinking WKD blue in a feeble attempt to keep cool.

If it gets any worse I am off to the cellar.

OberthursGrizzledSkipper · 17/06/2022 16:48

Sarahlou677 · 17/06/2022 15:12

People are free to enjoy their gardens how they wish

They aren't though, are they.

Anyone who wants to sit quietly reading a book and listening to birdsong is denied that by power tools and loud music.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 17/06/2022 16:59

Always surprised how many people think it's a good idea to mow their lawn in the middle of the day under a blazing sun. So bad for the grass.

I was fully expecting today to be a wall of noise - predicted on my neighbours usual form
But it hasn't actually been that bad.
I've probably bloody jinxed it now 😂

Madcats · 17/06/2022 17:08

It's too hot for people to be in the allotments above our house, so it's blissfully quiet (no petrol strimmers). The builders nextdoor but one have given up for the weekend.....

Actually scratch that; one neighbour is singing along to Abba's greatest hits whilst working from home (and I expect she'd be mortified if I mentioned that we could hear her loud and clear).

Other neighbour is sat with a book and headphones.

Sulusu · 17/06/2022 17:25

My garden is lovely and quiet during term time weekdays, so I am often out there working until 3pm when the neighbourhood kids start playing out. But I don't mind the kids playing or next doors dogs or the mowers, one set of neighbours however decides to do performance exercising every afternoon, which is extremely annoying.

They exercise peleton style in their garage but with the door open and at full volume. I mean the houses three down can hear every word the trainer is saying, why the hell would it need to be so damn loud?

It's so loud I can hear "shout out to Gina in Leeds, you got this Ginaaaah!"... it even drowns out next doors dog who gets wound up by it and yaps at the shared fence. It's only for 45 minutes a day but it's the most annoying sound, and it drives me inside in a huff.

mnnewbie111 · 17/06/2022 19:37

I love it. Love hearing the kids play. Not my own, they're annoying . And paddling pools and a breeze are saving my life and making this really quite pleasant

flapjackfairy · 17/06/2022 23:15

this is another reason I love winter. you dont have to worry about neihhbour noise so much.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/06/2022 23:18

Yes the lack of neighbour noise does give winter an edge. As a night shift worker I do prefer later mornings to get that little bit more sleep. Blackout blinds are good, but it’s nice (easier?) to come home in the dark.

slowcookerforone · 18/06/2022 15:10

I hate the summer for garden noise.
Because everyone is outside you can hear everything and at night especially as everyone's got their windows open.
I feel I have zero privacy.

flapjackfairy · 18/06/2022 17:06

@slowcookerforone
I know it is a pain. Last night the neighbours sat out with friends until 11ish and then retired indoors. All good except they left the doors and windows open and we're making a right racket.
Am I the only one who gets stressed out by people being loud after a few drinks. I feel daft but it really makes me feel threatened and puts me on edge.
