DD is 14, year 9. She's just had a message off her best friend to say she won't be in school today as her mum is taking her and her younger sister to the beach for the day. Que DD saying how cool the mum is and how unfair it is that I never let her miss school for fun stuff. I've got to work and even if I didn't I still wouldn't let her do it.

YABU-its a beautiful day, one day off school won't make a difference
YANBU-school is important and you can't skive off just because the weathers nice.

Think at that age it’s important they attend. I’m all for having fun with the kids but where do you draw the line, snow days, beach days. Although everyone circumstance are different

Ablackcat · 17/06/2022 08:02

I would be tempted but I’d say they were unwell rather than be honest about it!

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/06/2022 08:04

I think it's nice so long as it's not expected and it doesn't happen all the time.

Missing one Friday to go to the beach won't destroy her education! I'd certainly do it for my kids as long as it wasn't expected and they knew it wasn't a regular thing.

PetersRabbitt · 17/06/2022 08:05

It’s a one off, do it. I know a family that is going to the beach today instead of school, I imagine a few are so don’t think it will be as quite as what people imagine

PetersRabbitt · 17/06/2022 08:07

Also I think people are voting wrong as their reading your title and selecting yanbu

Dorsetdelight211 · 17/06/2022 08:07

PetersRabbitt well I can't because, you know, working to pay the bills and all that boring stuff!

Odile13 · 17/06/2022 08:08

It’s not something I’d do.

SweetSakura · 17/06/2022 08:08

Yabu.
Apparently it's fine for my son's school to take a hand picked bunch of children out for a bonus weeks residential, but I would get a fine if I took him out. (Hand picked I don't doubt because they have had difficult lives, but my god so has he)

I hugely value education, but there has to be less hypocrisy in the system.

thefamilyupstairs · 17/06/2022 08:09

I've done this many times (although not for the beach). I wouldn't tell anyone though as I tell school she was unwell.

What’s “many”?

Dorsetdelight211 · 17/06/2022 08:10

SweetSakura but equally what about the kids whose parents work therefore can't take their kids out for a beach day, that's not fair either is it?

OP posts:
Dee00 · 17/06/2022 08:11

I personally would not allow it and my DS is only year 1. We have fun packed weekends and park after school or something most nice days if the weather is good. That is enough. The school holidays are coming there will be plenty days for beach adventures.

SweetSakura · 17/06/2022 08:11

@Dorsetdelight211 and what about the children whose parents work and can't easily take time off in the school holidays....

Bibbetybobbity · 17/06/2022 08:11

No chance. I think it’s almost impossible to do this as a genuine one-off (why not next time it’s hot/snowy?) so I don’t understand that argument at all…

Dorsetdelight211 · 17/06/2022 08:13

SweetSakura exactly! I struggle to cover the school holidays as it is, I certainly can't use annual leave to book off random days during term time! That's what weekends are for.

OP posts:
MarysShackles · 17/06/2022 08:13

I wouldn’t do it even if could as they do need to learn they can’t just take a day off when it’s hot or cold or raining or whatever. People still have to go to work in sweltering heat.

Strugglingtodomybest · 17/06/2022 08:13

I would never do this, it's a terrible lesson to teach your kids imo.

FanFanFanFee · 17/06/2022 08:13

Ridiculous - YANBU
Sets a really bad precedent
Workers can't just sack off work because it's hot can they?

Yes it sets a precedent. There are always going to be other hot days, or another reason to take a day off.

anotherbrewplease · 17/06/2022 08:14

Lazy habits for lazy people - in my humble opinion. Yup - I'm gonna be hot in work today.

cosenza · 17/06/2022 08:18

Fgs. Do people really do this? It's only the first hot day, fgs. There will be plenty more!

MrsKeats · 17/06/2022 08:18

You can't be serious.

AmberGer · 17/06/2022 08:20

People do work on weekends too you know!

chchchchch · 17/06/2022 08:20

Even if I didnt work FT I would not do this, isnt this what school hols is for?!

It cant call your boss, saying you are not coming into work because its a sunny day.

HeddaGarbled · 17/06/2022 08:20

I think it’s going to pretty unbearable in school buildings today, so I can see some sense in it for purely health reasons, but I think it’s going to pretty unbearable in the sunshine too. Maybe it’ll be a bit cooler on the coast?
