What the f*** do the RMT think they are playing at.....

So, the RMT are striking for a pay increase....during GCSE's. The poor kids who use the train to get to school are going to be left up the creek without a paddle, but no, a £44k average salary is not enough and they have decided to hold the country to ransom for more money.

There are 4 (possibly more) GCSE's being held next week and probably many a-levels too, schools are already warning that if pupils are late the exams will have to start regardless.

They cancelled trains that got kids to school during the pandemic, they are paid above average.

I would actually like to see the RMT fail, and be called out, on this one, AIBU? They are a disgrace.

I am a union supporter generally, but this is greedy in the extreme and smacks of extortion to line their members pockets at the expense of the general public. Higher wages = higher fares.

YANBU

theyre being massively selfish and greedy

I wonder how many of their supporters on here will actually be suffering as a result of the strike, since it will hit low paid workers who can’t wfh the hardest.

they’re causing a week of disruption so should lose a week of pay for it.

You do not get paid when out on strike so they are losing pay

Chazzagirl2 · 16/06/2022 20:19

Liebig · 16/06/2022 20:11

Weird how they only strike during times of extreme economic distress. Someone should study that.

😆 @Liebig (that’s a supportive laugh, not a sarcastic one!).

Perhaps 2015 is 8:15pm rather than a year.

I know there is a move to remove guards from trains and reduce staff so if there is a problem you're on your own.

There are aspects to this other than pay but lots of people are unhappy if something affects them.

No this was a claim by the TSSA union about London Underground stations made in 2013. Nine years out of date. the wrong union and the wrong rail network. Apart form that, it's perfect...

lol, someone's first rodeo on the strike thing. You think they get paid to tell their employers where to shove it?

Terribly inconvenient of them to want a reasonable wage. Why doth the serfs protest so much?

The country is on its knees . We should all be pulling together right now not creating more havoc .

They have every right to strike but the timing stinks

'Pulling together'? Are you serious?

We get what we deserve re Brexit and Tory voting.

Own it.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/06/2022 20:25

Strikes are meant to cause disruption. That's how they work. They're a last-resort bargaining tool in a system which has made striking de facto illegal, thus emboldening the avaricious employers who are the cause of this mess in the first place.

The ballot/turnout threshold is ridiculously high and the legislation surrounding this about the most draconian in Europe. The fact that there are currently so many strikes amongst the sectors underpinning this country's infrastructure - UCU, Unison, RMT - is suggestive of the strength of feeling amongst employees having to endure worsening conditions and the outright contempt of management.

It will affect me. I've been looking forward to my first major conference in three years and it's going to cost me huge inconvenience to get there, if I can get there at all. I still support these workers.

YABU. Very.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 16/06/2022 20:26

#whre did you get the 44K figure for salary? YABU , not having a pay rise in 3 years and cost of living sky high is atrocious. People have the right to strike. Thatcher is dead and long gone

Liebig · 16/06/2022 20:26

Gotta pick yer battles, folks.

YABU

I despair at the amount of people who do not understand the point of industrial action (“waaah, it’s inconvenient for me!”) but also who are going on strike and why they are doing it.

the railway needs to be maintained and repaired and controlled. Every day. By people who are paid properly and with enough teams to do the work.

Right?! “This is so disruptive, how dare the people on whom we are reliant want to be paid for that reliance.”

they’re holding the country to ransom for a service that is already too expensive.

The workers dont get the money? It goes to the dft?

You clearly are not a Union supporter. It's massively inconvenient. But what I really would like to understand is why the government has made NO attempt to have talks. It's their job.

Port1aCastis · 16/06/2022 20:32

RMT members will also have kids sitting GSCEs kids they don't get to see off to school because they have to get up at 3 to get to the depot to take out the early train, or they don't get to pick up kids or help with homework because they're on a late or they don't get to see kids at weekends because they're working.

You're not the only one with kids OP

db11 · 16/06/2022 20:32

Tories created a market between companies for staff with privatisation. Part of the reason tickets are ridiculously expensive

FilthyforFirth · 16/06/2022 20:33

I work in this industry. We have not had a payrise in 3 years. Inflation is hovering around 10%. We worked throughout the pandemic, getting a lot of key workers to work. We were not furloughed and funnily enough we are struggling with the cost of living crisis.

You have no idea spouting £44k, I can assure you a lot of the workers the RMT represent earn nowhere near that. But nice try.

I fully support the strikes.

Thinkbiglittleone · 16/06/2022 20:33

You mean like the police? Oh wait no......they don't have the right to strike 🤔

Which is a disgrace ? As I say it would be amazing if others could follow meaning not having their hands tied or no support to do so.

It should not be a case of keeping us all down, it should be wanting us all to be lifted up.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 16/06/2022 20:33

The country is on its knees . We should all be pulling together right now not creating more havoc.

Precisely my sentiments about that repulsive celebration of obscene, hereditary privilege we saw unfolding the other weekend. Strikers are nasty, greedy mercenaries, but it passes unremarked that our illustrious rulers (in the wake of partygate, no less) saw fit to bestow upon it yet another public holiday that the country can ill-afford in the wake of Brexit, COVID and the resulting mess.

You'd almost think all those months on furlough for such a vast swathe of the country's workers wasn't enough. But it seems that in some people's eyes, shelling out millions for one old gal to whom they have an irrational attachment is fine and dandy, given she's on her last legs and wants a last hurrah.

Priorities. I prefer to 'pull together' with the strikers: the Empire's over.

SaskiaRembrandt · 16/06/2022 20:35

Instead of bleating about the injustice of it all, maybe people who'd like to have an equivalent salary should consider joining unions and using the power of collective bargaining to improve their own situation.

Or just carry on being poor and compliant. Whatever.

Cornettoninja · 16/06/2022 20:36

@fuming12 you know what these kids do when there’s a fatality on the line or any other type of disruption that commonly happens on train networks? They need to do that.

There’s plenty of notice.

BoiledFroggie · 16/06/2022 20:37

Personally, I'd like to see striking made illegal.

Well they'll be able to take them that day now since they won't be working eh?

Not like all the other low paid key workers who still have to work but now have the worry and expense of getting themselves to work and their children to exams. Terrific.
