What the f*** do the RMT think they are playing at.....

So, the RMT are striking for a pay increase....during GCSE's. The poor kids who use the train to get to school are going to be left up the creek without a paddle, but no, a £44k average salary is not enough and they have decided to hold the country to ransom for more money.

There are 4 (possibly more) GCSE's being held next week and probably many a-levels too, schools are already warning that if pupils are late the exams will have to start regardless.

They cancelled trains that got kids to school during the pandemic, they are paid above average.

I would actually like to see the RMT fail, and be called out, on this one, AIBU? They are a disgrace.

I am a union supporter generally, but this is greedy in the extreme and smacks of extortion to line their members pockets at the expense of the general public. Higher wages = higher fares.

Be prepared for a flaming, there was one thread like this earlier and the majority of posters agree with the strike.
Personally I agree with you and my son has already lost a days money being self employed and couldn't get to work last night week. He faces losing 3 days money due to the selfish strikes
They ought to give up the government will do nothing anyway 🤷‍♀️

The important thing is that your selfishness trumps their selfishness.

Danikm151 · 16/06/2022 19:48

they’re holding the country to ransom for a service that is already too expensive.

lobsterkiller · 16/06/2022 19:48

100% support the RMT. This is also about the many low paid workers that deserve a decent rise in the cost of living crisis. 👏

DelorisVC · 16/06/2022 19:52

Yabvu.
Please don't believe the shit that Murdoch and his cronies pedal out so that they continue to get richer.
The facts are out there if you czn be bothered to look.

RedWreck · 16/06/2022 19:53

I'm guessing you want your dc to be as safe as possible while using the railways?
Would you be happy with unstaffed stations & no staff on trains?
How about a few thousand less track maintenance staff?
I would imagine you would be complaining again if the already over stretched railways didn't meet your demands in future.
Its not just about money.
Also you are angry that trains were cancelled in the pandemic but most services were cancelled or reduced, not just trains. Keep in mind that the rail staff worked throughout the pandemic to bring any services they could.
Strikes are disruptive, let's hope some demands are met & it doesn't happen.
But it's not about greed.

And you know who work brutal shifts? RMT members ...
£44K per year average? Absolute bullshit.

It isn't for train drivers. It'd be like saying everyone at Starbucks was on £100k because we only looked at the senior marketing managers and not the baristas.

ilovesooty · 16/06/2022 19:56

@RedWreck well said.

Itsbritneybitch22 · 16/06/2022 19:59

You have absolutely NO idea what you’re talking about 😂

Thinkbiglittleone · 16/06/2022 20:03

Plenty of people deserve pay rises but won't be getting one either.

So we should just all agree to keep taking pay cuts as the price of living rises and wages are stagnant.
And we should just all accept its perfectly fine to discard staff so ruthlessly, and in this case make our railways unsafe.

No, they should fight for their well earned pay rise, it would be amazing if others could follow and we don't live in a society where it's ok to underpay people, hold them to ransom knowing they need a job so will take shifty contracts and discard them when we find a way to.

itsgettingweird · 16/06/2022 20:04

Well you've fallen for the Tory party anti union line haven't you?

Perhaps do proper research to actually what is early by those working in the railways.

What their pay increase has been along with cost of living and inflation.

What changes they have had to undergo to their contracts and working conditions.

And then perhaps - when you look at the fact them not working does actually cause disruption to peoples lives people will begin to respect what they do and pay them accordingly.

And if we're really lucky the same will extend to nhs, emergency services, education etc as well.

Perhaps 2015 is 8:15pm rather than a year.

I know there is a move to remove guards from trains and reduce staff so if there is a problem you're on your own.

There are aspects to this other than pay but lots of people are unhappy if something affects them.

2015?!

hattie43 · 16/06/2022 20:08

The country is on its knees . We should all be pulling together right now not creating more havoc .

They have every right to strike but the timing stinks

gingersplodgecat · 16/06/2022 20:08

Ordinarily I am not a fan of unions in general. Not by a long way.

But on these particular issues, I am 100% behind them and support their strike wholeheartedly. The proposed changes are truly appalling, and a tragic disaster waiting to happen.

DogInATent · 16/06/2022 20:11

YABU for not understanding the concept of average.

DisgruntledPelican · 16/06/2022 20:11

YABU

I despair at the amount of people who do not understand the point of industrial action (“waaah, it’s inconvenient for me!”) but also who are going on strike and why they are doing it.

the railway needs to be maintained and repaired and controlled. Every day. By people who are paid properly and with enough teams to do the work.

Weird how they only strike during times of extreme economic distress. Someone should study that.

Liebig · 16/06/2022 20:13

I'm all for police strikes.

Also, they can arm the revolution, I mean, the very strong march to deliver a strongly worded letter to No. 10.

comealongponds · 16/06/2022 20:15

YANBU

theyre being massively selfish and greedy

I wonder how many of their supporters on here will actually be suffering as a result of the strike, since it will hit low paid workers who can’t wfh the hardest.

they’re causing a week of disruption so should lose a week of pay for it.

Ohbuggeritsme · 16/06/2022 20:15

DP is a member of RMT and relies on trains for his job in freight. However we agree with the strike although its going to cause havoc for the entire household as it will others.
I'll be sure to tell him he's a total arse for striking to get the pay he deserves, as do others. I can well assure you he does not earn £44k per year!!!!
