What the f*** do the RMT think they are playing at.....

So, the RMT are striking for a pay increase....during GCSE's. The poor kids who use the train to get to school are going to be left up the creek without a paddle, but no, a £44k average salary is not enough and they have decided to hold the country to ransom for more money.

There are 4 (possibly more) GCSE's being held next week and probably many a-levels too, schools are already warning that if pupils are late the exams will have to start regardless.

They cancelled trains that got kids to school during the pandemic, they are paid above average.

I would actually like to see the RMT fail, and be called out, on this one, AIBU? They are a disgrace.

I am a union supporter generally, but this is greedy in the extreme and smacks of extortion to line their members pockets at the expense of the general public. Higher wages = higher fares.

Here's a thought. Maybe the employers could engage in some sensible and constructive negotiations with the unions so that no strike is necessary?

pushingpoppies · 16/06/2022 21:32

They are holding the country, all workers and just about everyone, to ransom. People will miss hospital appointments, funerals, exams, interviews, just about everything. The roads will be chaos with people who usually travel by train. People will die in the back of ambulances waiting in traffic queues (rather than waiting because hospitals are full). It's outrageous.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 16/06/2022 21:33

They didn’t have to hold their strike in the run up to GCSEs. So no you are not being unreasonable

vera99 · 16/06/2022 21:35

Full support from me - call out the hedge funds, the oligarchs, the tories who are looting out societies and enriching themselves whilst the world burns. Look up not down or across and see who the real villains are.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 16/06/2022 21:35

And they need to consider that more and more people are starting to want to WFH whenever possible. If they aren’t careful then this could backfire on them massively.

fuming12 · 16/06/2022 21:27

This would be more interesting if you were to post the average of RMT workers which is a fair bit higher than this as I am sure you know....I believe it to be about £45k.

Which RMT staff earn £45k - the cleaners?

Againstmachine · 16/06/2022 21:37

There will always be a week that's not good for some.

And I still maintain there isn't that many children who catch train to school.

EL8888 · 16/06/2022 21:38

Let them crack on. It won’t ultimately buy them public support. I’m sure ultimately drivers will be replaced by machines in my living memory. Machines aren’t greedy and entitled.

See other threads! There are so many good posts on threads started just like this.

The police aren't allowed to strike, no-one seems to have a problem with that.

Other Alpha World Cities have automated Trains so I don't see why London can't.

The RMT are stuck in the 70s with On the Buses and Blakey etc.

CotDotten · 16/06/2022 20:48

I agree. This year's kids have been totally up against it. More than any other year taking exams. They don't get predicted grades. Are mostly sitting on sub tuition due to covid.
Any other week. It's bonkers.

I agree with this. The current year 11s and 13s have had such a tough time. Why can't they wait a few weeks?

vera99 · 16/06/2022 21:49

Everything will be machines in the future including a lot of middle-class jobs whilst the proles fight amongst each other for scraps of the rich person's tables and 'other' those that want to fight for their rights. It's no coincidence that the Daily Mail is pushing a flood of Royalist bilge down our throats currently whilst demonising sections of the organised working class. Incidentally, the Rothermere's - owner of the Daily Hate and 'great patriots' offshore most of their money.

Who maintains the lines? Programs the computer? Cleans the train?

@CotDotten @YodaBabe

Yes to both of you.

Do none of you remember the stress of exams? Getting there and actually being able to answer the questions?
Add in this year, not being taught a full curriculum, exam boards mucking up their advanced information (I'm looking at you AQA Physics....).
Oh and just the final turd on the bonfire, your transport method breaking down, not for any real reason but because the RMT think this is a good week to cause "maximum disruption".

Just take responsibility for your own kid. The RMT didn’t decide to conceive your child - you did!

ilovesooty · 16/06/2022 21:52

Strikes are meant to cause inconvenience. There's no point to them otherwise.

It's about time all workers being shafted by their employers and this government went out on strike as far as I'm concerned.

^this

strikes are supposed to be disruptive when the employer doesn’t listen.

the unions were destroyed and look at the state of workers rights now. Shit pensions, overworked and under paid.

MiniCooperLover · 16/06/2022 21:56

Strikes make an impact when they disrupt, rightly or wrongly ...

ilovesooty · 16/06/2022 21:57

I'm still a member of Unison even though I'm self employed now. I'll gladly give up a day's pay and march on a nationwide day of action in support of the strike if one is called.

Shade17 · 16/06/2022 21:57

The union scum are an absolute disgrace!

Thatswhyimacat · 16/06/2022 21:57

Please, for the love of God, can we stop with the 'earning 44k' bollocks that has been debunked by anyone with a brain and without an agenda. Jesus the level of maths literacy and reading comprehension in this country, along with our critical thinking, actually makes me despair.

That figure includes train drivers, who earn a great salary but crucially are mostly not part of the striking union and also are an anomaly amongst the huge numbers of much lower paid staff doing jobs on the railways.
