To tell you my baby has just been born?!

My DH has had to go home to see the dogs and will be back later with DS 4 so for now I am in hospital by myself. However it is a lovely quiet post natal ward with one other couple. I think she had a c section this morning so not up and around yet. We are also right next to the canteen for food! DS was born this morning on his due date and his waters were still intact! Sometimes called mermaid birth/en caul. I don’t have anyone to talk to in hospital so posting here shamelessly.

Congratulations, OP. What a beautiful baby. I hope you feel like Tina Turner in Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome! (Caitlin Moran phrase which made me smile - basically invincible!) Enjoy the wonderful bubble.

Thank you all lovely mumsnetters. I woke up at midnight on his due date, which saved me going for a stretch and sweep at lunchtime which is nice. Contractions were already 5 mins apart and lasting 45 secs or so, so we called my mum to come over to be here for DS and made our way in as it’s a little way to the hospital. Made it to the birthing centre about 2am but they moved me to labour ward due to previous PPH. So no water birth for me which I had been told was ok but not upset. At 3am they called the other midwife as they thought he was coming but things slowed a little and I did feel I couldn’t do it. I did panic a bit to my DH that he was stuck and I would need a C-section but I think I might have been in transition? Once this passed I felt much more able to breathe through the contractions, and would definitely recommend a TENS machine. I honestly thought my waters would go at any minute as the pressure was intense and my body was pushing of its own accord but DS came out still entirely encased and I was able to see before the midwife opened them and got him out. The was some meconium in the waters so we are in for obs for 12 hours. However should be able to go home tonight. Hopefully a picture attached.

Aww he's a little dear!

Congratulations!

Lots of folklore around cauls out there.

Panda368 · 16/06/2022 16:03

@tealandteal this happened to me with my second. Baby in a bag/still in his wrapping paper. It’s so weird isn’t it!
It’s supposed to be quite rare though more common with water births and hands off births.

It’s supposed to mean they are lucky/will never drown.

MissMaple82 · 16/06/2022 16:05

Congratulations, my son was also born in the bag 😆

Catcatcat12 · 16/06/2022 16:06

Congratulations! There are at least two Swedish monarchs who were born en caul so your son is in good company 😊
