To suggest more variety is needed (father's day cards)

My dad is a bit shit. He's remarried and his wife ensures they spend most of their time with her children & grandchildren. He lives 35 miles from me but I haven't seen him since last November and before that it was the previous Xmas. He misses my kids' birthdays, never calls (I used to call him but gave up after a while). I love him but he has no presence in my life.

I'm trying to find the right Father's Day card to send him and they all say things like 'To my amazing Dad' or 'thanks for everything you do for me'...AIBU to suggest that they should make a few that say something along the lines of 'You're a bit shit really but I still love you'.

I HATE father's day cards! My dad doesn't like football, golf or beer, doesn't lend me money, and definitely isn't the world's best dad. I really struggle to find a card each year. I found one this year that had an old man asleep outside and a caption something like 'I'm not asleep, I'm just resting my eyes says old man, unware the family moved him outside hours ago because of his snoring'. I wish we could do that with my dad, though of course he never snores, just breathes heavily apparently.

Go into moon pig and personalise one to this

That would require a degree of effort that he doesn't deserve Grin

You'd likely find one on Etsy. There's loads of us who sell cards and are able to completely personalise. There's also those businesses who specialise in quirky cards who should have some.

comealongponds · 15/06/2022 21:36

I’ve had phases of struggling with this but have always managed to find a generic “happy Father’s Day” card, usually go to either Card Factory or Moonpig. Moonpig is less effort than going to a physical shop, personalisation can be as little as “dear dad, happy Father’s Day, from MrsDoofus”, you don’t have to add photos or gushy messages

wheresmymojo · 15/06/2022 21:41

I need a 'Happy Father's Day...thanks for paying towards me when I'm not yours but you're still a bit of a racist controlling dick' card

Thortful is great for unusual cards

Catchy

I think you're right, what I want isn't something neutral, but actually something a bit passive aggressive. Dad, you're below average and my kids wouldn't pick you out in a lineup, happy Father's Day, lots of love MrsDoofus'

I would definitely recommend looking online for just a ‘Happy Father’s Day’. No indication of being a good day or anything.

Bigthicksliceoftoast · 15/06/2022 21:46

YANBU the shops could definitely do with a few more bland / neutral options. Not every dad is amazing, and not every recipient is Dad.

I struggle to find one for my daughter to give to DP, he’s great and she loves him to bits, but he’s not Dad and she doesn’t call him Dad. There’s always a few “step-dad”, or “like-a-dad-to-me” options, but it just seems to make an unnecessary fuss when a simple “Happy Fathers Day” would suffice.

Moonpig is a good option but it is more expensive than a supermarket card, and lots of blokes (or the ones I know at least) aren’t really that bothered about cards.

VeryGoodVeryNice · 15/06/2022 21:47

Oh god I was only thinking the same thing when buying a card the other day! My dad sounds pretty much identical to yours, although he does buy my DC birthday and Xmas presents to be fair to him (although I don’t get anything and that is the limit of the involvement he has with them).

I just went for the most bland, simple, generic card I could find. Managed to find one that wasn’t overly gushy. If there was one that said “hope your gold-digging new wife is spoiling you on Father’s Day, as none of your kids will see you as per usual” I’d have got that instead 🤣

Ginandslippers · 15/06/2022 21:47

As someone else said, I always go for the ones that just say 'Happy Fathers/Mothers Day' as it's easier to just send an insincere card than to deal with the drama not sending a card would cause.

solarbirdscalm · 15/06/2022 21:51

I gave up a few years ago as it was just so depressing going into card shops and seeing all those messages about dads who are amazing.

Longdistance · 15/06/2022 21:53

I’m sure they sell really small and insignificant cards saying ‘Happy Father’s Day’ in card shops and supermarkets.

IncessantNameChanger · 15/06/2022 21:54

My dad was amazing but I agree with the sentiment. Can we add a 'happy birthday nana, I always thought x was daddy's mum' as my kids have zero relationship with fil or step mil but mil is so shit that my kids think step mil is DHS dad. They dont even know who mil is. How do you sum up that in words?

That's for creating me but from then on in - epic parenting fail

bbqhulahoop · 15/06/2022 21:57

Thortful!

WGACA · 15/06/2022 21:59

I wouldn’t send one in your shoes.

dollyblack · 15/06/2022 22:00

Fully agree- i was standing for ages at the cards going “nope”, “nope”, “nope”.

i usually get a blank card with a picture he’d appreciate.

MrsDoofus · 15/06/2022 22:00
