To not understand why people go abroad on holiday in the summer?

My social media is full of people on holiday abroad at the moment. It's glorious here and I've got a few days off work so I've just been for a walk round my village and will spend the afternoon in the garden reading in the sun with a couple of glasses of something.

Britain is lovely in the summer - I'd far rather go abroad later or earlier in the year when the weather is not so good here and make the most of the weather here while we have it.

I've never really understood the desire to go abroad while it's nice here. Anyone else with me?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a caravan holiday in the uk but It's no replacement for my main holiday abroad.
As nearly everyone has said you just can't guarantee the weather here ! We might have a couple of hot days but then it'll piss it down for a couple of days after that.
The whole thing I like about going abroad is the consistent sunshine, warm outdoor pool, nice beaches and warm sea, getting dressed up of an evening, walking around finding a nice restaurant and it's still warm until late. You just can't have all that here.

We've had 3 UK holidays in the past 3 years, one to Isle of Wight which was one of my fave holidays ever, and were pretty lucky with the weather but before that, any holiday we had in the UK had awful weather. So I didn't want to risk it this year. We got a 10 day holiday to Portugal in July, 3 adults 1 child for £2400 which I thought was pretty good. We paid £1400 last year for a week in Devon in a fairly small caravan

AbleCable · 15/06/2022 10:24

How are you not able to understand that other people might like something different to you? 😕
I happen to also prefer to spend my holidays in the summer at home or visiting family (none live anywhere near me). But I can understand why someone else might want to travel away then - not least because it's when the kids have a few weeks off at the same time.

angieloumc · 15/06/2022 10:24

I don't like the heat and so don't go to a hot place abroad but I understand and get why some people love it.
I've been to cooler climates and love that but a lot of people I know are shocked as they love a sunny holiday. Horses for courses.

DelilahBucket · 15/06/2022 10:24

Yes but you can't just book time off and guarantee the weather. We went to the lakes for Spring Bank and it rained every day apart from the day we came home. We had two weeks in the UK in August last year and it rained or was freezing. Couldn't even get a single decent day for a barbecue. For what it costs, I would rather go abroad and get the guarantee of the sunshine. At Spring Bank we could have spent less and done the same amount of time at an all exclusive in Europe.

It’s nice right now but England is hardly renowned for its consistently good weather

People want escapism, culture, food, scenery, weather, warm pools, experience different language, sightseeing etc etc etc

Is that really difficult for you to understand….?!

This.

Given this time last year, it was dark and wet (and this was the case for most of last Summer), is it really that difficult for your brain to comprehend that the week of annual leave we have to book in advance may not be bright and sunny to enjoy the garden/local villages?

Those with children are limited to school holidays, the longest of which is during Summer.

Most of all, is it really that hard to acknowledge we are all different and have different opinions?!

worriedatthistime · 15/06/2022 10:25

But its not always lovely and not guaranteed like abroad, for example where i am at weekend its not meant to be great and this is the first spell of a couple decent days on a row
So its obvious why people go abroad

I don't find my garden very cultural and the seafood restaurants in it are limited

Also not that more expensive to go abroad than here sometimes even can be cheaper
A caravan in cornwall can be £1500 a week in school hold in some places add your food etc and entertainment if weather is crap

wallpoppy · 15/06/2022 10:27

I love very hot weather - 30 degrees is perfect. I love swimming in the sea without turning blue. I love baking on a lilo in a swimming pool with a trashy novel.

I especially love going out for dinner - after swimming and baking all day, you take a shower and put on your best sundress. You've got just enough sun so you don't look quite as grey and porridgey as normal, the temperature is cooling down a bit, the breeze feels amazing, everyone is in a good mood, and it all feels so right that you briefly contemplate chucking it all in and moving to Crete (or wherever) 😹

Compare that to our August holiday in Fowey, Cornwall last year, where we were literally unable to find one restaurant with availability for the entire week- so we went shopping in a depressing Co-op and cooked in an under-stocked holiday let kitchen for every meal. The view was pretty, but the water was freezing and completely overrun with jellyfish- 90% were fine, 10% were like swimming nettles and completely unavoidable. There was one day when it hit 20 degrees and the rest of the week was about 12 to 15, with grey skies and rain. And it cost approximately three times as much as our last trip of the same length to a villa with a private pool in Chania.

FiveShelties · 15/06/2022 10:27

Oh yes OP, why would anyone want to holiday abroad, when they could be enjoying a Lancashire summer?

daisybrown37 · 15/06/2022 10:28

Because different people like doing different things. Why don’t you understand that?

Plus, I don’t have a pool or beach in my garden.

Subbaxeo · 15/06/2022 10:28

Some of us like to go overseas for more than the weather.

worriedatthistime · 15/06/2022 10:28

@ForestFae really where and when as i can never find them for a week for 5 or are we talking in a tent , which is not comparable

Crikeyalmighty · 15/06/2022 10:29

One of the delights of adult kids is being able to abroad in June and September- nearly always lovely, not as packed and if we get a nice July here well that's a bonus!

Dixiechickonhols · 15/06/2022 10:29

See sights and experience different cultures. Weather abroad is more consistent. It was freezing last week I had a jumper on in work and was cold. It’s pleasant here today (north) but not swim suit weather.

notacooldad · 15/06/2022 10:29

Events and festivals that I want to go to in different countries happen during the summer months.
I don’t always go to hot countries as I’m not a heat seeker. Iceland is still chilly in August!

ForestFae · 15/06/2022 10:29

I’ve never liked the heat, I’m surprised so many do (not that people like different things, just that so many seem to enjoy sunny beach type holidays). 30 plus degrees?! Shock

This again in spades. Hold the front page. Different people like different things. Big shocker.

ShandaLear · 15/06/2022 10:30

its great that you live in a lovely village with a nice garden to sit in, but most people live in busy town and cities, often with no access to easily accessible pleasant outside space. The weather here isn’t guaranteed, and the kids are still in school so if you want a cheap holiday now is the time to go.

Wnikat · 15/06/2022 10:30

It's cheaper to go abroad than holiday in the UK when you factor in the price of eating out/ drinks/ accommodation. Also it frequently rains here for up to a week.

worriedatthistime · 15/06/2022 10:30

Also abroad I love the warm evenings sitting outside with a meal and drink watching the world go by
Its rare you can do that here as even if days are warm we only have a few really warm nights a year

BatDuck · 15/06/2022 10:31

I live on a hill in the middle of the Pennines. We had our heating on last week. Most of the time it’s pissing down here, that’s why we go to Spain.

Littleraindrop15 · 15/06/2022 10:31

it's expensive to do a holiday in the UK far cheaper to go abroad you can go somewhere that guarantees good weather and also beaches that have warmer water. there's also culture and food
