Covid - holiday

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 13/06/2022 18:32

Mother in law unwell- we go on holiday Friday as a family. Should she test, sore throat, temperature and headache are her symptoms.

What would you do?

Covid has left me deaf - don't know yet whether it's permanent or temporary.
Of course she must test.
And FIL is a selfish arse. 😒

girlmom21 · 13/06/2022 19:05

Why would you not test if you have the option to test and prevent potentially making innocent people very poorly?

That's awful, I hope you are okay and getting the correct support

She is fighting with herself should she test/ not test.

I don't know what advice to give her

Does she give a shit if she has covid or not? It's a simple question I don't know why she's struggling.

YukoandHiro · 13/06/2022 19:07

Definitely test. Worst case scenario and she has got covid and takes a turn for the worse, do you really want her hospitalised overseas?

And that's before you even get to the moral element of flying with the virus

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 13/06/2022 19:07

Yes she gives a shit, her husband thinks she shouldn't. It's not always black and white for some people

Turkey... yes we are hoping it's just a normal cold. FIL has the attitude you don't have to test so don't. MIL feels very differently

Well its MIL's nose so she can do what she wants and FIL should support her decision.

Very good point, that and the insurance one earlier. I will bring these points up with her.

It is though. If she wants to then her husband should let her. Why is he so controlling? Is he like this in other ways?

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 13/06/2022 19:12

@BaaCake not particularly controlling. He just feels very strongly about this. His view point is that they are getting older less chance of holidays. Life should just resume unless told otherwise.

They were very strict during covid so his attitude is a little surprising

I understand his view. But this is MIL's view and if she wants to test she should be able to do so without fear of FIL's response should it be positive. Also as PP said you don't want to risk going abroad with it and being hospitalised there. Even if its not hospitalisation bad "mild" covid can be really awful.

Thank you it's a bit grim. Week three of deafness and kinda getting used to it after panicking. Yes I'm getting help but it's a bit of an unknown- it's a rare but documented post-covid issue and they really don't understand it yet.
On the bright side I got cheap hearing aids off Amazon and I've been able to put the TV on today and hear what's going on in the world again! So all is not lost.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 13/06/2022 19:16

@heldinadream I work with deaf people and people who loose their hearing. There is so much support out there. Good luck with everything

All my lateral flow tests were negative. Only a pcr test picked up that I have covid. So you can't trust testing. I will never trust lateral flow tests now

Thank you, I will.

I hope your MIL tests. It seems really silly not to - she could get really ill, any of you could. It's still potentially really nasty. Someone needs to stand up to your FIL and tell him his current attitude on this is not on.
Let alone insurance issues etc.

Nothingoriginalhere · 13/06/2022 19:32

Currently day 5 of covid, 1st time, started with sore throat and headache last Wednesday tested negative on Wednesday and positive on the Thursday - have gradually got worse and worse - awful chesty cough, having to sleep upright due to phlegm etc etc
still poorly and testing very positive ( have to test for work - nhs) - I wouldn’t have wanted to be abroad especially somewhere like Turkey and I would have felt ok on Wednesday or Thursday possibly even most of Friday to still go - worst days so far have been sat/sun and today
Also how disgusting to potentially infect a plane load of people intentionally

Sugarmoose · 13/06/2022 19:41

I have COVID just now and isolating away from my family.I would be testing her to make sure she isn't positive and passes to your family as it can take days for it to come out .
My hubby test positive on the Monday and it took me till Friday to display symptoms ,I'm really ill with it for a second time .

gah2teenagers · 13/06/2022 19:50

Very selfish not to test. Hope someone vulnerable is not on the plane next to her.

All tests work on essentially the same principle - they measure DNA. they do not identify infectious virus.

Page 6 in bold letters: "..detects presence of viral genetic material in a sample but is not able to distinguish whether infectious virus is present."

So was she positive?

miltonj · 14/06/2022 11:01

By Friday she'll very likely be testing negative anyway! Don't worry, have a lovely time on holiday Smile

Not necessarily at all. Took me 7 and DH 9 days to test negative.

Mulberry974 · 14/06/2022 12:54

QuidditchThroughtheAges · 13/06/2022 18:59

Ah yes the moral dilemma of whether or not to infect an entire plane load of people about to have a holiday.

Quite. So much intense selfishness about these days. For every person like me who has a decent immune system there's someone with suppressed immunity who they are putting in danger of serious illness.

bigbluebus · 14/06/2022 13:27

We were due to go on holiday last Saturday. DH tested positive on Thursday. I tested positive on Sunday. We're glad we didn't go as neither of us feel fit enough to have enjoyed the trip and we would undoubtedly have infected the couple we were going with. Was only in this country though so no risk of infecting a plane load of people.
DH is still showing a very strong positive test result today. DS also tested positive on Sunday but is working from home.

How would you all feel if MIL went on holiday and infected you all and ruined your holiday? Although are symptoms are like a bad cold I don't think I'd want to be travelling or sitting somewhere hot. I'm struggling to keep my temperature down in this country!
