Body weight scale are misleading

yesnosometimes · 13/06/2022 18:11

My body transformed from a dress size 16 to 10, height is 159cm
My starting/current measurements(cm) were:
bust 100 now 90
waist 95 now 70
hip 107 now 98
shoe size went from 5 to 4

But on scale i lost 13kg. My start weight was 90kg and now 77kg, and still classified obese.

My worry is that medical professionals make decisions on scales. Is there anyone else who can explain, body weight and scales.

I don't take notice of scales because I weight train. I wouldn't worry what the professionals say. Trust the tape measure and your clothes.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 13/06/2022 18:32

I'd be surprised by that weight at size 10 but it would suggest you have greater than average muscle mass - which is a good thing.

Why are you concerned about the medical professionals - are you trying to pass a fitness test for a job/sport?

Was adviced to get to about 63kg for surgery.

How much exercise do you do?

The reality is that it is very, very, difficult particularly for women to build enough muscle for them to be in the obese category of BMI.

Are you sure there’s not an issue with your scale or how you are taking measurements?

TheMarzipanDildo · 13/06/2022 18:37

Sounds to me like your scales are broken, looking at those measurements! Or you are very very muscular.

AquaticSewingMachine · 13/06/2022 18:39

I weight train and don't pay much attention to the scales either, but I have a normal BMI.

Tbh, at 77kg you are probably still carrying considerable body fat. I would focus on reducing this, as you've been advised to do. Rightly or wrongly, the NHS have given you a target. You could also get some body comp scales and start tracking your body fat %.

Mymoneydontjigglejiggle · 13/06/2022 18:39

Yeah very confusing - I'm 10kg less than you, taller than you and a very solid 12, a 14 in some styles. Are you sure that's your weight?

PurpleDaisies · 13/06/2022 18:40

It’s surprising your weight is 77kg given your measurements. Have you checked on another scales?

Giraffesandbottoms · 13/06/2022 18:40

159cm and 77kg size 10 is not believable!

5128gap · 13/06/2022 18:41

Do you carry your weight on your arms legs and thighs? The measurements you give are definitely indicative of a lower weight, so could this be an explanation?
You are also a pear shape with a relatively small waist and so depending on the cut of clothes and where you shop can get away with a smaller size than if you carried your weight on your stomach.
Lastly, are you weighing yourself at consistent times, and without heavy clothes, on accurate scales, and allowing for any possible water weight?

NerrSnerr · 13/06/2022 18:42

I'm 5ft 1, 10st 7lbs and wear a size 12 (BMI states overweight).

Are you very muscular (like body builder size?) Have you used different scales to see if it's correct?

CeeJay81 · 13/06/2022 18:42

I'm 160cm and have those measurements except a bit smaller on the bust and weigh about 56kg. I'd be surprised if your 77kg. Sure thats right?

hihellohihello · 13/06/2022 18:43

Well, I expect that would be perfectly possible. Whilst your weight loss is fantastic I don't think your measurements sound so minuscule it would be unhealthy to lose a bit more to satisfy the surgery requirements.

Other than that could get a dexa body scan to find out your actual body composition but for the sake of a few kg I think I would probably just lose that last bit of weight.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 13/06/2022 18:44

I'd try some different scales. My measurements are very similar to yours (waist 70cm, bust 81cm), I'm 6 inches taller than you and 11kg lighter. I also weight train etc.

The measurements and weight seem a bit squiffy to me!

Hallyup89 · 13/06/2022 18:48

I'm 164cm, dropped from 85kg to 77kg and am still most definitely a size 16. I'd be shocked if you're a 10.

PurpleDaisies · 13/06/2022 18:49

You lost a shoe size?

TheCanyon · 13/06/2022 18:52

I agree your scales or measurements are wrong. I'm 7cm taller, 24kg lighter, bust 90, waist 67, hips 89.

Flowersinthewindowstill · 13/06/2022 18:59

I'm 5ft 8 & at my lowest weight was 74kg - at that I was size 12 on the bottom and 8-10 on top. Very skinny in the face. I am also extremly pear-shaped, not muscular.

At that weight I was only just in the normal weight category. Even at 80kg I still looked pretty much fine. My measurements at my lowest weight were 25 inch waist, 38 inch hips, 34 inch bust. Most people guessed I was several stone less than I was. So it's possible - though I would think more likely if you were in the overweight category. I know a good chunk of people who have overweight BMIs and and look totally standard to me. Obese people, not quite so much.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 13/06/2022 19:26

I don't think yhe medical professions have a major issue with lots of very muscled people tipping the scales to overweight. I think most people over 25 bmi are there, like me, because they are eating more than they are burning off. I am definitely not over muscled!

Dewix · 13/06/2022 19:35

Body Mass Index was originally for statistical analysis of American weight.

The UN took the average of US measurements & reduced it 10% on the assumption that the US is obese.

Other nations, including the UK, took the UN's figures & reduced it by a further 10% as a target weight. Thus the obesity crisis was born.

Furthermore, the original creator of the method stated that this should not be used for individual assessments.

Dress sizes are made up from brand to brand, season to season, so very inconsistent.

All-in-all: BMI is science misused for political reasons & dress sizes are pulled out of a hat, figurative speaking.

mistermagpie · 13/06/2022 19:38

I'm 172cm and about 60kg and am a size 10. I know body shapes and density can vary, but your scales sound way off. I'd try a different set just to be sure because something doesn't add up.

Gensola · 13/06/2022 19:38

I am 158cm tall and weigh 58kg with very similar measurements (smaller bust but otherwise similar) so it seems unlikely you could be those measurements and height and 77kg unless youre made of lead! 😁 maybe try other scales and you’ll get a nice surprise of being lighter than you think!

WhoppingBigBackside · 13/06/2022 19:41

You lost a shoe size? PurpleDaisies

If you lose or gain weight your shoe size can change

InChocolateWeTrust · 13/06/2022 19:45

I think your scales are off. I weigh about 72kg and am 170cm and am a 14, not a 10..... I can't believe at 77kg and that height you'd be less than a 16 or 18. Sorry.
