Body weight scale are misleading

yesnosometimes · 13/06/2022 18:11

My body transformed from a dress size 16 to 10, height is 159cm
My starting/current measurements(cm) were:
bust 100 now 90
waist 95 now 70
hip 107 now 98
shoe size went from 5 to 4

But on scale i lost 13kg. My start weight was 90kg and now 77kg, and still classified obese.

My worry is that medical professionals make decisions on scales. Is there anyone else who can explain, body weight and scales.

OP posts:

Clothes sizes are irrelevant these days. I can be three different sizes.

Snoken · 14/06/2022 09:41

I think you scales are broken, or you carry significant weight in an area that are not covered by the measurements, like legs and arms.

I am 167cm
90cm bust
72cm waist
102cm hips

I am 61kg and size 10. Excericse daily, so quite low body fat. If I weighed 16kg more, there is no way I could fit into size 10 clothes.

Giraffesandbottoms · 14/06/2022 09:42

This is why I don’t trust clothes sizes at all. Vanity sizing is very real.

Body Mass Index was originally for statistical analysis of American weight.
The UN took the average of US measurements & reduced it 10% on the assumption that the US is obese.
Other nations, including the UK, took the UN's figures & reduced it by a further 10% as a target weight.

BMI was invented by a Belgium in the 19th Century. The ratio of weight divided by the square root of height has not changed in the past 200 years.
The US (and the UK) follow WHO guidelines, putting a BMI above 25 as over-weight.

Yes but the measurements the op has provided are consistent with a much lower weight. This isn’t an issue with vanity sizing. It’s a people with the scales (most likely). People with the same measurements as the op are saying they’re much, much lighter.

gamerchick · 14/06/2022 10:16

If the measurements are correct then there's no way the OP is over 12 stone at 5ft 2 and a size 10. It's more likely her scales are buggered.

Giraffesandbottoms · 14/06/2022 10:17

@PurpleDaisies

it is a very easy solution to use different scales and see! Otherwise I’m skeptical re the measurements given - it’s not actually that easy to measure oneself accurately. Otherwise I agree the scales broken

Rosehugger · 14/06/2022 10:22

Your waist to height ratio puts you in the healthy zone and at low risk of diabetes . What's your cholesterol, blood pressure etc like? Doctors aren't bothered about my BMI as all other measures are good.

For surgery, it's not like you wouldn't fit the standard equipment at 77kg.

Ha premiumpeaches just measured myself out of interest- we are pretty much twins 😁

This is weirdly cute! I'm in my third trimester at the moment though so those aren't my current measurements haha :)

@Rosehugger "For surgery, it's not like you wouldn't fit the standard equipment at 77kg."

Really? How come? I know OP is big for her size at that weight but surely there are LOADs of people at healthy weight much bigger than her. She's obese mainly because she is short (I am too, not a slight!).

Rosehugger · 14/06/2022 10:30

but surely there are LOADs of people at healthy weight much bigger than her

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying. There will be loads of people much heavier than 77kg having surgery. I just wondered if the worry was that she wouldn't fit the standard equipment, but I'm sure she would.

I was just remembering having to turn in a little circle on the ground when my BMI was borderline obese to see if I would fit in the standard MRI machine. I did, amply, but I did wonder at the time.

I was 16 stone, size 16/5ft 10 when I had spinal surgery and a load of MRIs. They didn't even blink at my weight/size except for weighing me twice and saying I was very heavy for my size

Sorry, misread what you wrote!

The numbers you quote seem improbable. You are 21kgs more than me and 12cm shorter. I’m fit and toned and mostly a size 8, occasionally a 10. If I were your weight and height I’d be severally sizes bigger!!

ChubbyButt · 14/06/2022 10:50

@Rosehugger There are many surgeries that the NHS refuse to perform on someone who isn't a "healthy" BMI - for example breast reduction surgery almost always has "healthy BMI range" as a criteria, even when the person is very muscular (or their BMI is dragged up by their exceptionally large breasts).

Just wanted to add - come back and tell us your verified weight - you must have lost more than your scales are telling you - congratulations !!!

xogossipgirlxo · 14/06/2022 11:45

I am 163cm, 57 kilos and my waist is 67cm. There must be something wrong with your scale. Not possible you weigh 20kilos more than me and have the same dimensions.

Sandinmyknickers · 14/06/2022 12:09

Hmm I'm almost exactly the same height and a size 8/10...but a "dense" size 8 as I have a fair bit of muscle. And i dont weigh anywhere near 77kg (fluctuates between 58-60kg) I think your scales might need adjusting or try them on a different surface...?

Congratulations and well done on your weight loss!
