Is that a ridiculous amount for a household of 4 adults and 2 children? We need to cut our monthly spending.

OP posts:

It’s a lot but not unreasonable given the number of people you feed. Where do you shop and what are your typical meals / snacks?

toastofthetown · 12/06/2022 19:17

YABU.

Hugasauras · 12/06/2022 19:18

We are £400/450ish for two adults and one child so it's not totally mad, but we could cut down a bit and you probably could find some places to cut down if you need to.

soootiredddd · 12/06/2022 19:19

Not wildly unreasonable but probably unnecessarily high. Reckon you could manage £650

UnaOfStormhold · 12/06/2022 19:19

Hmm, we probably spend about half that with 2 adults 1 child so while it seems a lot it's probably comparable. That said there are things we could do to cut down on spending and I imagine the same is true for you. Do you have any sort of breakdown of your spending?

GordonBennetttt · 12/06/2022 19:19

It sounds expensive but for the amount of people you're feeding I think it's about right.
We spend about that much or slightly less for 2 adults 3 children.

PresidentByeThen · 12/06/2022 19:19

We're 4 adults and a teen, and we average £750 a month so no, I don't think your spend is outlandish

BiscoffSundae · 12/06/2022 19:19

So do I, family of 5. Prices have got so high though as it use to be £150 ish could get it cheaper I’m sure but I do online shop at Tesco’s haven’t got time to go to Lidl’s/aldi

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/06/2022 19:20

If you need to spend less then spend less. Buy less stuff, choose cheaper versions.

GiltEdges · 12/06/2022 19:20

We spend similar with 2 adults and 1 child... although we do also have two large dogs to feed which probably makes up £150 of it.

420Bruh · 12/06/2022 19:20

Food is unbelievably expensive now. This recession is going to be awful.

Malariahilaria · 12/06/2022 19:21

Am always curious with these threads. Does this include all food, all cleaning products, all toiletries, all booze and all take aways. Or is this the weekly just food shop? Some people seem to separate these spends and some don't.

BiscoffSundae · 12/06/2022 19:21

This is Mumsnet though so people will say they go to Lidl/Aldi and spend £25 a month for a family of 5 🤣 sure.....

FourTeaFallOut · 12/06/2022 19:22

That's what we spend, 2 adults, 2 teens, 1 kid - one dietary restrictions in the mix.

HereIAmBrainTheSizeOfAPlanet · 12/06/2022 19:23

Why don't you cut your spending then?

FourTeaFallOut · 12/06/2022 19:24

That's all supermarket spends for us, so probably includes the odd pack of socks for food measure.

ScarlettDarling · 12/06/2022 19:24

I spend about £200 each week on all shopping...main shop, top ups, cleaning stuff etc. So that’s about £200 for us too, 2 adults and 2 teens. I agree it’s crazy money. I seem to spend huge amounts on fruit, don’t know what the rest goes on🤷🏻‍♀️

motogirl · 12/06/2022 19:24

Seems not unreasonable for that many people. I was spending more than that for 2 adults and two teens 5 years ago before I clamped down

EinsteinaGogo · 12/06/2022 19:24

It's not enormously extravagant, OP.

What's your situation, what are you aiming for?

AffIt · 12/06/2022 19:24

That's about £130 a month / £30 a week per person, although you don't mention the ages of the adults or children.

If the children are pre-teens and the adults pensioners, I'd expect less either way, but if it's a household of working adults and late-teenaged children - basically adults anyway - then I think that seems reasonable.

mamatoTails · 12/06/2022 19:25

We are family, 2 adults and 5 children between 5-14, and we spend 800 a month.
Sometimes a little more.

Then give it a go at cutting it down. It's where you'll potentially save a lot. One thing I find helps a lot is to have two baked potato meals a week.

HardRockOwl · 12/06/2022 19:25

We are 2 adults and 1 adult appetite teen and I spend that.

If you can afford it then it's fine. If you can't, make some changes

mosesbasskit · 12/06/2022 19:27

Where do you shop?

BaaCake · 12/06/2022 19:28

Are all 4 adults working? If it's like an adult child make sure they are contributing fairly towards food
