We spend £800 a month on food

Is that a ridiculous amount for a household of 4 adults and 2 children? We need to cut our monthly spending.

OP posts:
Merryoldgoat · 12/06/2022 19:28

I spend nearly that on 2 adults and 2 kids. It’s disgusting and I’m SURE we could get it down but it’s insane.

meowzeer · 12/06/2022 19:29

Omg this prompted me to check my spending and I spent £604 on shopping and £480 on eating out in May. I am disgusted. No more uber eats for us. We are 2 adults 1 child.

greenacrylicpaint · 12/06/2022 19:31

sounds reasonable to me tbh

we spend closer to 1k with 5 adults, 3 dc (adult sized teenagers)

lightisnotwhite · 12/06/2022 19:31

Its £42 for 2 adults here. That’s lunch and dinner no breakfasts. Meat and veg type meals with spices/ herbs thrown about. Snacks, coffee and household goods.

So triple that and £130 a week should be plenty?

Basketet · 12/06/2022 19:32

Meanwhile there are huge numbers of children in modern day Britain growing up with nutrient deficiencies.

Well done, OP, for being fortunate enough to blow £200 a week on proper food for your family.

DockOTheBay · 12/06/2022 19:33

If you need to cut your spending I'm sure there is room to do so.
suggestions:
Buy less alcohol/luxury drinks or desserts
Bulk buy things like pasta monthly rather than a bag a week
Eat veggie once a week or more often
Try own brands rather than branded, especially for things like cereal and baked beans where you are unlikely to notice the difference.
Cook from scratch, don't buy ready meals or pre-prepared stuff
Stick to cheap in season fruit and veg. I.e. not berries and tropical fruit

SusieSimpleman · 12/06/2022 19:35

No harm in spending it if you can afford it but it sounds quite a lot to me.

On just food we spend around £130 a week for what I'd class as 4 adults and 1 child (2 adults, 2 teen boys with adult appetites, 1 child).

DenholmElliot1 · 12/06/2022 19:35

Thats a bit on the low side in my opinion. It works out at roughly £30 per person per week which I would say is the minimum amount one should be spending in order to have good nutrition.

I'm so fucking sick of these posts.

TooMuchBoozeTooManyBoos · 12/06/2022 19:36

3 adults here and we spend abput £600 pm on all supermarket spending.

mamaduckbone · 12/06/2022 19:37

We probably spend £500 at least on 2 adults and 2 teens (4 adults really in terms of what they eat) and we shop mostly in Lidl and Aldi, so I wouldn't think that's wildly extravagant.

We could do with cutting down a bit but I'm not sure how unless we literally have a beans on toast day every week. It's not like we're scoffing fillet steak and caviar.

Goodskin46 · 12/06/2022 19:37

2 late teenagers and 2 adults here at least £600 pm ,1 adult and 1 child are vegetarian, no booze in that although some tolietries and cleaning products. I like to think I am reasonably thirfty. So seems fine for another 2 adults.

princesspeppax · 12/06/2022 19:40

Me, DH, 3DC plus 1 dog and 1 cat and we are around £650 monthly sometimes a little more sometimes a little less. We don't buy anything extravagant. Food prices are ridiculous just now, really hope they come down or wages go up soon !

hennybeans · 12/06/2022 19:41

We spend maybe just a bit less than you, op. 2 adults, 2 teens, 1 child.

Although we don't drink and I buy toiletries, cleaning products, dog food, elsewhere. All that money is pretty much just food which is every meal for the 5 of us except 1 teen who eats lunch at school.

I'll be honest and say that spending could easily be cut by not shopping at Sainsbury's, cutting down on berries/ meat, and more expensive items. So £800/month I don't think is outrageous, but could be cut down if needed.

Soddingcat · 12/06/2022 19:45

its around £5 per day per person
not over the top
we have the same amount of people and spend the same or more

CruCru · 12/06/2022 19:45

What does it include? I remember being quite taken aback at how much my parents spend (they’re mid seventies and it’s just the two of them) but then found out it included gin and cigarettes.

xippo · 12/06/2022 19:46

we spend a bit more than that, 2 adults and 2 kids. we still eat out a lot and have takeaways too. Even though we can afford it I'm gobsmacked by how much prices have increased. Our usual curry take away was £69, its now £82!!!!

Maybe but you have to factor in economy of scale.

My guess is a lot of snacks and/or branded stuff.

We spend more than double that for two adults and two cats so I think you're doing fine 😂
