To think Top Gun Maverick is only good because it’s so bad!

I heard / read loads of great reviews about Top Gun Maverick but I couldn’t believe how bad it was!

It’s essentially the same film as the first one - I’m sure deliberately so but it became a parody of itself.

And, I know I’m over thinking this but

• Since when can people fighter planes wear glasses
• How can 4 jets fly in a row so closely together?
• How can they fly through a viaduct?

There were a couple of laughs in it and the ending was cheesy Hollywood at its finest but it was nowhere near as good as I expected.

Holy shit, how did I make that mistake?

There's not much about TC that's natural any more.

So who's getting the ageing process right? Like Kelly says, "I'd much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and my age than place any value in all that other stuff."

Saw the film the other day… yes unrealistic! A navy pilot wouldn’t just be able to jump into an aircraft and take it for a joy ride! Also, they wouldn’t allow Maverick to just stay at that level for 30 years and still only be a captain! He would have been retired by the Navy by now.
But Tom Cruise still looks youthful and can’t believe he was like 58 in this.
Jennifer Connolly- I still remember her as the 15 year old from Labyrinth! She’s has aged quite a bit.

Wow well remembered! I didn’t make the connection but then again I haven’t seen the original since the 90s..

I loved it, thought it was better than the first film!

I love how the opening scenes were almost identical to the original. The electric guitar, playing the famous theme tune, whilst the fighter jets are preparing to take off from the ships, the ground crew doing the countdowns..

I went to see it following rave reviews from family and many friends.

I thought it was awful. Much prefer the first one.

Because the first one was original. The second was a cheese fest rip off of the first.

It was so bad it was funny.
No mention of Kelly not even a picture. It was a vehicle for TC. Why did the son need the same dead gerbil under his nose. That look was odd even in the 80s

If you don’t like big Hollywood blockbusters, which invariably will be cheesy, why spend money going to see it and then just say how awful it was? I absolved the references to the original, I admit I cried. Our dogs are named for characters in the original, my DH’s favourite film. You have to take these films at face value, it’s never going to be on the top ten most authentic and worthy film list.

Im glad Tom Cruise refused to release it during the pandemic or to allow it to be streamed. It definitely needs a big screen.

Yes, the first film is the height of cinema and definitely not a cheese fest…

I think you’re confusing the two films. See, the one with nuance of male character development outside of “macho hot head” and emotional beats and stakes is the one that came out this year. The original film is almost pure cheese feast with amazing action, but pretty much gets carried by Mav and Goose and Scott’s aerial direction.

And I say this as someone who has watched the original more times than I care to count and have a pilot’s licence as consequence (couldn’t make the RAF cut, sadly).

The sequel is just an objectively better film in almost all ways outside of lack of ‘80s synth pop and more F-14 action.

Man, what a derivative “review”. Does no one actually explain reasoning any more, or so we just jump to “it sux”.

This is why grade based reviews are so popular, because people literally cannot form a coherent thought as to what they like and don’t like and need of be told.

9/10, best film ever. No, I won’t introspect and elaborate on why.

I did think the son dressing like and playing the piano and music of his dad was faintly ridiculous. Especially the whole loud shirts teeny tache thing.
And there was no surprise about who would come to the rescue.
But we really enjoyed it as a sequel to the original.

Why did Goose’s son have to be a replica of him? Moustache and playing the piano? It was too silly for words!

Forget about the flying issues and just focus on the beach scene.
