To think Top Gun Maverick is only good because it’s so bad!

Lighthearted!

I heard / read loads of great reviews about Top Gun Maverick but I couldn’t believe how bad it was!

It’s essentially the same film as the first one - I’m sure deliberately so but it became a parody of itself.

And, I know I’m over thinking this but

  • Since when can people fighter planes wear glasses
  • How can 4 jets fly in a row so closely together?
  • How can they fly through a viaduct?
There were a couple of laughs in it and the ending was cheesy Hollywood at its finest but it was nowhere near as good as I expected.

@Liebig it’s not the actual storyline I’m talking about, it’s the scenes and you’re honestly missing the similarities if you didn’t notice any of this

  • Aside from the obvious intro, ending and beach sports
  • When TC walks in as a trainer and the pilots all look down because they realise it’s him they threw out of the bar is a direct copy of the scene when Kelly McGillis walks in and TC looks down as he’d hit on her in the bar
  • Hangman chewing a cocktail stick like Iceman did
  • The racing a motorbike along the runway against the planes
  • When TC says ‘if you fly planes long enough you’ll lose people’ or words to that effect to Rooster is a copy of what Viper said to TC
  • The ‘talk to me Goose’ stuff
  • TCs love interest lives in a house on a corner that he pulls up to on his motorbike
  • TC getting a bollocking from his superiors then them giving him his dream shot

It's top gun.

Of course it was going to be cheesy and suspension of disbelief is required.. It was great.

Butterflyfluff · 12/06/2022 16:06

I think it might have been you who missed all the similarities to the other film.

It was literally full of scenes with the new cast in the same positions / situations as the first film.

and I didn’t say Bob was a pilot - I said he was in the plane

You didn’t actually, you mis-typed, but as above, corrected vision has been allowed for years.

Butterflyfluff · 12/06/2022 16:28

Missed the rivalry between Hangman and Rooster throughout is the same as Ice and Maverick and they make up at the end

I’m just surprised corrected vision via glasses is allowed when they are always so sweaty! 😂

Well I have got some housework to do...
I feel a Top Gun soundtrack on Alexa will have me blitzing through it !

bizzey · 12/06/2022 16:30

Very loud 😃

Liebig · 12/06/2022 16:31

No, I get those. But they are minor references to the first film. There is more than enough there in terms of new characters, plot elements and the dynamic Maverick has that makes it a new film. The homages to things from the original outing don’t detract from that nor make it a paint-by-numbers remake.

It’s not like, say, The Force Awakens where the entire story is beat for beat the same as A New Hope but with a new cast, or Jurassic World.

If, as I suspected originally when hearing a sequel was in the works, they simply redid the first film, but with a new cast a la Ghostbusters 2016, then I’d be fuming and it would legitimately not have done what it did at the box office and in critical reviews. As it is, they managed to call back to the atmosphere of the original, but make something new and entertaining no less, with more mature emotional aspects and even more incredible real action in an era of CGI capeshit films dominating box office takings. Minor miracle.

So so cheesy - I found them all hugely unlikeable ( except for Bob, I'll let Bob off)

Except Hangman was a genuine arsehole, while Iceman was simply confident and didn’t like how Maverick was so reckless (with good reason). The denouement may be the same, but Hangman ≠ Iceman because he has a toothpick.

I think that was part of the problem for me too

everyone was just ‘meh’ - There was no chemistry between any of the characters

@Liebig you clearly don’t understand that I’m not saying it was the exact same film, I’m saying it was full of references and copies of scenes of the old film

It annoyed me, it clearly didn’t bother you, but it doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.

@Butterflyfluff don’t forget the topless beach scene. Although I was a bit Hmm at 50 something Tom Cruise outrunning 20 something fighter pilots at the peak of fitness.

I loved it, proper nostalgia for me. Loads of it was the same as the first one, but that’s kind of the point. I was a teenager when the first one came out as we were obsessed with it. I loved all the call backs to the original.

Liebig · 12/06/2022 16:39

Fair point. If those were too much for you, I get it. I found they got the balance between satisfying old fans and bringing something fresh to the party. That they did it competently is the cherry on the cake.

Let’s be honest, the cinema is a very different place nowadays, and not for the better.

They managed to get “Tom Cruise does Mission: Impossible run” in this film. That was pretty funny. The man can bloody leg it when it calls for it.

I put that one at the top 😂

TBF to TC he looks good for 59! But everything that compared him with 20 somethings was bonkers! 😂

I loved it. Brilliant film and was fun to watch with my 14 year old as I was 14 when the first one came out!

I totally accept you are in the majority though - it’s definitely me and just a few others who are the odd ones out! 😂

I loved it!

I rewatched the first one before heading off to watch Maverick at the cinema

I’m not a Tom Cruise fan but he did look incredible for an older man

Hangman looked very much like Iceman but more arrogant

it was lovely to see Val Kilmer too

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 12/06/2022 16:44

Top Gun Maverick was brilliant & loved every minute of it & it was even better the first Top Gun.

itsgettingweird · 12/06/2022 16:48

The ending was a bit like the Disney movie, Planes where the broken old plane saves the day. The bit before was totally unrealistic, unbelievable.. but then so was the beginning.. no one survives a plane breaking up at infeasibly high speeds.

I said the same about Planes to ds. Lots of it reminded me of scenes from the cartoon!

I loved it too.

Agree best not to overthink as it's meant to be a cheesy fun easy watch.

JaneJeffer · 12/06/2022 15:44

It is really annoying that they replaced the love interest
Well they couldn't hardly force Kelly McGillis to return!

I dont think it would have worked!

Went last night and loved it. Pure escapism and my heart was in my mouth for the flying scenes. Perfect escape from my reality!

jimboandthejetset · 12/06/2022 16:58

Awww it's a fab film! Of course it's really cheesy and quite ridiculous, but aren't all films of that genre? TC looks incredible for 59 (I'm not a big fan but he was nice to watch for two hours). And I loved how much they played homage to the first. The music literally made me tingle as I ADORED the soundtrack back in the 80s.
I'll probably go and see it again Blush

Redcrayons · 12/06/2022 16:58

So you did. That scene was pivotal for a very sheltered 14 year old 😂so nice to see that again.

Agree he’s in excellent shape for his age, but he’s not outrunning a 25 year old fighter pilot.

I was also pleasantly surprised that he didn’t have a 22 year old hot girlfriend, the love interest is older than me.
