To think Top Gun Maverick is only good because it’s so bad!

Lighthearted!

I heard / read loads of great reviews about Top Gun Maverick but I couldn’t believe how bad it was!

It’s essentially the same film as the first one - I’m sure deliberately so but it became a parody of itself.

And, I know I’m over thinking this but

  • Since when can people fighter planes wear glasses
  • How can 4 jets fly in a row so closely together?
  • How can they fly through a viaduct?
There were a couple of laughs in it and the ending was cheesy Hollywood at its finest but it was nowhere near as good as I expected.

@Liebig you clearly don’t understand that I’m not saying it was the exact same film, I’m saying it was full of references and copies of scenes of the old film

It annoyed me, it clearly didn’t bother you, but it doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.

It's a nostalgic sequel to an 80's classic. It would be weird if it didn't reference the original.

It is really annoying that they replaced the love interest
Well they couldn't hardly force Kelly McGillis to return!

She wasn't asked. Unfortunately she no longer fits the Hollywood mould as she's dared to look like a woman of her own age.

notimagain · 12/06/2022 17:17

Adding a second to much of what has been said:

Fighter crew/Glasses - Often allowable if vision correctable to acceptable limits.

4 aircraft in a line = close formation, fighter crew well trained in same.

Flying under bridges...see previous comment about the Hawker Hunter and Tower Bridge..

Hollywood has always been about looks though and her and TC simply wouldn’t work as an on screen couple now.

He looks amazing for his age and she doesn’t.

Unless he’d been with her since the last film but that didn’t fit his character.

Blue Angels (Us equivalent of UK Red arrows) Cockpit Video - they fly close together.

(it's 16 minutes long)

I was just responding to the comment that Kelly McGillis could hardly be forced to take part. The truth is though that she's far more representative of your average 62 year old than Tom Cruise is of your average 59 year old, or indeed Jennifer Connelly of your average 51 year old. I suppose it's good that they at least didn't do what they normally do and cast him opposite a 30 something actress.

The diamond formation they shift from to the close together line one is known as an echelon formation and helps with concealing numbers of aircraft. Likely what the MiG-28s did in the original film finale.

The Darkstar breaking up and having an ejection at Mach 10 would likely have involved a pod. The XB-70 Valkyrie had the function of jettisoning the whole crew in a sealed unit given they’d be cruising at Mach 3+.

Since when have people in Hollywood films been representative of their age group - whatever age that may be?! 😂

The main problem was Tom Cruise's lack of acting ability. I mean the man can run and fly planes but ask him to convey emotion and he starts gurning away. Don't suppose it matters too much in an action film but it did annoy me a bit

I was meaning the bit where they flew in 2 pairs, one directly behind the other, through the valley.

wouldn’t the jet wash be a problem here?

I honestly thought it was the best film I’ve seen in years.

totally cheesy, totally predictable, not in the least bit intellectually stimulating.

but my god - it was just perfect. Deeply satisfying - what a piece of cinema.

As the man Maverick said ‘don’t think’ 😂

JaneJeffer · 12/06/2022 17:34

Because she doesn't want to fit it. She does theatre now.

Tom Cruise’s lack of acting ability? lol

@Butterflyfluff The jets are at different elevations. An echelon formation has them stair stepped so they don’t have the lead jet’s exhaust flameout the one behind it and so on.

catgirl1976 · 12/06/2022 17:37

I really enjoyed it

I don't think they were aiming for the Oscars - just fun, exciting, 80s reminiscing silliness. Which they nailed

I don’t see how the end could be seen to be predictable. There was genuine tension in the finale when it could have very easily have Maverick sacrifice himself. That also had great pay off because it felt earned that everyone got back in one piece, I didn’t feel cheated that they survived unlike if it was some Marvel flick.

Contrast this to the latest Jurassic World where there is ZERO tension or threat at all and everyone phones it in.

But they were at 300ft and couldn’t go any higher.

@SwanBuster i agree, so good I’ve seen it twice
had a real feel good factor, I was engaged from start to finish
just been to see Jurasssic Dominion and that was just average, relying on the success and nostalgia of the previous ones.

Helen Mirren is over a whole decade older and looks far better. If Kelly wanted to let herself go, that’s fine. But Jennifer Connolly is in better shape than most 20 year olds I know.

They only need to be a few metres above or below, or not even that. So long as the jet wash isn’t being directed into the turbines of the aircraft behind, they’re fine. Any display team in the world will do manoeuvres where they fly within feet of the next aircraft, and military pilots are the best at this. Tornadoes in Desert Storm flew Scud busting missions at less than 100 ft. off the deck wingtip to wingtip.

This. I absolutely loved it. Had enough nods to the original, a touching scene with Iceman and jets flying. I go to the pictures for escapism, not realism, and this was perfect.

And I still lust after Tom Cruise.

I found it hilarious when they tried to make emotional gravitas by having Chris Pratt’s group meet Sam Neil’s and played the JP theme as if both meeting one another means anything outside of fanservice.

They also forgot to write a script or compelling action, so there’s that too.

Yeah, Maverick is basically homage to the first film and the Death Star trench run from Star Wars, but give me actual stakes and a solid plot over whatever the hell Jurassic World: Dominion was doing.

axolotlfloof · 12/06/2022 17:51

DH loved it because "it had a simple plot and lots of action". I disliked it for the same reasons.

Jumpking · 12/06/2022 17:53

Just got out of my 2nd showing of it. I love it. I love the original.

It is so predictable. But a perfect cheesy sequel for Tom.

And I absolutely LOVE Val Kilmer appearing in this one after his throat cancer. The rumour is that Tom refused to do this one unless Iceman had a role.

Ya boo sucks to y'all who are dissing it!

i agree there was plenty of tension regardless. Look - I loved it - whether it was predictable or not.

But why the hell would you post such a grotesque set of spoilers🤦‍♀️
