I am a self-employed beauty therapist. Things have been hard over the past couple of years and there have been times when I have not been able to pay the rent or buy food.

Six weeks ago, I was offered a position in a salon. The business was owned by a woman who bought the salon as is, but has no beauty industry experience. She seemed very keen for me to come onboard and I spent a couple of weeks working on how we could remodel the salon and make it profitable. I have a lot of experience in this area and was very excited at this new opportunity.

I took my salon equipment to her salon and started work a few Saturdays ago. I worked 3 hours and we had one client come in who was very happy with the service. However, it was then quiet and the salon owner made the decision to close the salon as she didn’t think anyone else would be coming. She told me to come back next Saturday as this client had rebooked with me.

During that week, I contacted her to firm up details of the salary, etc. She ignored my messages and it became very apparent that she had ghosted me.

I then found a 4 week temporary job that I could start straight away, but was only during the week, so I could still work at her salon, in theory.

I told her that I had had to take the temp job as I had rent to pay, but could still work at her salon at the weekends until things picked up. She went mental at me for taking the other job and sent me a very long and quite abusive text message.

Since then, I have been trying to get my salon equipment back as well as my pay for the 3 hours and have asked her when it is convenient to pick it up. It’s a very long way and I need to get someone to drive me there as the salon equipment is heavy.

Most of my messages she’ll ignore, but sometimes she’ll send quite abusive messages back.

I thought we made some headway today as she texted me and told me she would be at the salon for 45 mins. I told her I was on my way and would get there as soon as I can. I was 2 mins late and she’d gone 😞.

She then texted me this long rambling story which didn’t really make sense about having another client and being late and it all being my fault. She was ranting and raving about me and what a terrible person I am 😢.

I have sent her so many messages about picking up my stuff. Most of which she had ignored. She is now saying she is going to dump all my salon equipment in the rubbish 😭.

Without my equipment I have no business. Without my business I have no income. It would cost me about £500 to replace my equipment and I just don’t have it. As well as that, I’ve had some of that equipment for years and it’s of great sentimental value.

I want to go to the police for help but will they see this as too trivial to help with? AIBU? Thanks.

Hello everyone, so after the police contacted her, she dumped my equipment at the back of the building but she seems to have kept £60 worth of supplies. She also hasn’t paid me for the time I worked there.

I am tempted to leave a scathing Google review.

Confused, you said earlier that you got your stuff back? Now you suddenly haven't got it all back?

GemsNails · 25/06/2022 12:16

@ILikeHotWaterBottles i got all my equipment back but when I went through it I saw that she’d kept some of the consumables. And I still haven’t been paid.

leave the review
I wouldn't want to go to a business that steals from employees. if it costs her money GOOD! it cost you money

GemsNails · 25/06/2022 13:01

This is my draft review...

”[Beauty Salon] is a filthy, chaotic dump run by a crazy woman. I worked there for half a day but left because it was so dirty and unsanitary. I had to get the police involved to get my salon equipment back as any attempt to arrange to retrieve my equipment was met with vile abuse from the salon owner. And she never paid me for the hours I worked. I would recommend staying as far away as possible from this disgusting health hazard of a salon.“

All the advice has been to leave it. Ignore if you want but it won't make things any better.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/06/2022 19:00

I absolutely would not leave that review. You will be the one who comes across as unhinged. Just let it go.

This. If I saw that review for a business, I'd think you were mental and bitter.

FOJN · 26/06/2022 08:41

I'd be careful about leaving a review like that. Firstly I'm not sure where you would stand legally with some of the claims you've made and I do think it's possible you could look like a bitter ex employee seeking revenge.

If you feel you have a duty to warn people about standards of hygiene then I think you need to word it carefully. Is there no official body which sets and regulates standards in this type of business? If you think the standards of hygiene represent a public health hazard then I think you have a duty to report it..

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/06/2022 09:00

I agree with leaving it and moving on (as hard as that is). If you're determined to leave a review, remove the 'run by a crazy woman' and re-word the rest to make it strictly factual (& for you to sound less unhinged).

hopeishere · 26/06/2022 09:16

Just leave it. No one really reads Google reviews anyway.

ImpartialMongoose · 26/06/2022 09:21

You need to change the wording of that review. If I read it I would write it off as revenge by a sacked aggressive ex employee.

The review should contain the facts, as you have laid them out to us. No insults, no personal attacks on the character of the owner. The facts will speak for themselves.

scotscorner · 26/06/2022 09:33

As others are saying, you really shouldn’t leave the review you’ve drafted. It makes you come across as nasty when up until now you have done nothing wrong. Sounds like her salon isn’t doing well anyway so you’re not ‘protecting’ anyone from a bad service

Anger is like a hot coal - it burns the person holding it. Let it go, and move on with your life.

PS sorry I never saw your original post but I am a police officer in UK and as you’ve been told it is theft. If she’s kept your consumables it is still theft, you should follow up with police (I think you said you’re in Australia but I imagine the points to prove are similar to the UK: dishonestly/appropriates property/belonging to another/ permanently depriving the owner).

Also you might want to go to the police about the vicious messages - again I am UK but here they could constitute the offence of malicious communications. That’s more reasonable than leaving unpleasant public reviews.

balalake · 26/06/2022 09:35

Small claims court perhaps for the money and cost of supplies? Might not gain you much but will possibly stop it being done to others.

Bednobsbroomsticks · 26/06/2022 09:41

Yeh don't send review . You've had lucky escape you could have invested more time and money in. Plus if she's as crazy as she sounds the review might just make things lot worse for you x

I certainly do. First place I check when looking for a trade/beauty etc business I've not used before.

GemsNails · 27/06/2022 21:08

Thanks everyone. I am not going to leave the review. I am considering Small Claims Court though.
