To think not many women have short hair

I know there will be posters on here who have, but just thinking of people I know in real life.
Thinking of a group of 7 friends I've had since school, not one of them has above shoulder length hair. One tried a pixie about a decade ago, but grew it straight out and none have ever had anything less than a very very long bob.
I vaguely know of 2 women with buzz cuts, which suit them, they're my partner's colleagues, but otherwise I know nobody.
Working across secondary schools, it's very very rare to see girls with short hair. Maybe 2 in the whole year group.
I may be wrong but I've never seen anybody on a show like Love Island with short hair, always flowing extensions.
I have it, but sometimes wonder if I'm considered more unattractive for it, not that it matters, I do it for me.
Does anybody else notice this?

Mine is short, has been for 30 years. It’s very thick and heavy, so is completely unmanageable long - I had it long as a cheapskate student to save on haircuts and it fell out of any ‘do’ I put it in. Apart from having it cut regularly it’s no effort at all. I don’t even brush it most of the time.

Justleaveitblankthen · 10/06/2022 21:59

Remember the early Meg Ryan and Demi Moore? I don't think I have ever got used to the longer styles they now were. They are frozen in my mind as Sally and Molly 😁

wear

People keep saying having long hair looks witchy like it's a bad thing!
I like looking like the only witch in the village. Witches are awesome

LavenderfortheBees · 10/06/2022 22:07

My hair is fine, thick, poker straight and bright ginger.

Long, it only needs a trim once a year or so and I can wash it every three days, brush it and go. I can also do nice styles if I fancy but it's pretty eye catching left down.

I had an asymmetric pixie for a couple of years and it needed a cut every 6 weeks, washing every day to not go limp and product to give it body.

Much, much easier long but I can see why it would be different with curly or thicker hair types.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 22:08

Short hair used to be seen as modern and trendy. When I was in secondary school only girls who dressed old-fashioned had long hair.

LavenderfortheBees · 10/06/2022 22:10

I also think many men look better with long hair.

The big difference between men and women is that men go bald and long hair with receding hair lines and a bald patch looks dreadful.

Lots of men with long hair don't really care for it properly so it doesn't look as good as womens hair much of the time. That's a socialisation thing though not a biology thing.

Was that in the 1980s by any chance?

That's what I'm aiming for too 😁

I chopped all of mine off last week and I love it 😍. So much easier and I’ve had loads of compliments.

tararabumdeay · 10/06/2022 22:29

Hairdressers make money out of straightening curly hair and curling sraight hair.

Many women are forced to cover their hair by men. It's just stuff that grows (or not). Why is it a topic of conversation?

So, when I was young my long blonde hair was a wasp talisman. Now I am older, with a similar hair style, I'm a witch? I don't need anyone to tend it unless I choose. But the 'hair' industry continues to objectify women or categorise men according to the protocol or fashion.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 22:49

@TwinklingFairyLights Yes late 1970s and 1980s. It was the same in the 1920s. Trendy modern women got their hair cut short.
When I was at Secondary School in the 80s only committed Christians and the kind of girl teenagers still dressed by their mum had their hair long. Or very sporty girls who did not dress up at all and always had their hair tied back for ease. Slight exaggeration, but not by much.

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 22:50

And you had Princess Diana with short hair wearing the lastest British designers.

I think this is accurate. My sister and I both had long hair (we still have it long now) and I remember us being called hippies, by a couple of the boys, for the long hair with centre parting.

Desiredeffect · 10/06/2022 23:12

I have short hair and it's just a graduated shirt Bob but can tick being my ears. I can't stand long hair now on myself

MumofSpud · 10/06/2022 23:17

My mother has always thought that women over 30 should have short hair so has made comments to me since I turned 30....20 years ago!
In Lockdown I got her to trim my long hair - she started at the back - I wanted maybe 1-2 inches off - she cut nearer 8😫

antelopevalley · 10/06/2022 23:25

@MumofSpud My mum thinks the same about my sister-in-law. She says how old-fashioned she looks.

And now it's much more on trend to have long hair, look at everyone from the current young royals to supermodels. Most have long hair.

WeasilyPleased · 11/06/2022 00:06

I've had short hair for the last few years but am now thinking of just letting it do its own thing for a bit and hacking at the fringe now and again.

BashfulClam · 11/06/2022 00:14

My mu has had short hair my whole mouse. She dues absolutely nothing to it and as it’s so fine (like mine) it sits flat and looks terrible. I like my hair longer and it’s currently just at my shoulders.

bumblingbovine49 · 11/06/2022 00:40

I was in my early 20s in the late 1980s and had short hair throughout secondary school and university and into the mid 90s. Sometimes it was a bit longer but never very long and often a pixie cut. When I was in my mid 30s I grew it for a few years but it was shorter again by my mid forties and I keep it short now in my 50s ( short bob length rather than pixie)

At my first wedding in 1991, I had very short hair, cut into the nape of my neck and I looked great. I remember that the best man told my ex that I looked like Demi More ( from Ghost). Looking at the photos now I can see what he meant but at the time I thought he was bonkers.

When I married DH I had long hair and I needed 2 hours and a hairdresser for it to look good. For my first wedding I just washed and blow dried my own hair in 10 mins and put on the veil , though I did have professional makeup done. I still looked better in my first wedding but that is because I was 25 then but was 39 when I married DH 😄

Short hair has always been my preference . My DM even kept my and my sister's hair quite short when we were children so I've had short hair most of my life really.

Shaved my head once after a bad dye job. Looked a bit like Khrushchev. Never again on that one, don’t have the head shape for it. I don’t like how short hair looks on me (and I did try in vain to make it presentable), so it’s staying long.

grin

NannyGythaOgg · 11/06/2022 01:10

i am not a teacher and usually have little to do with schools but i have been doing some invigilating during this years exams.

I would say that of the mid teens that I have seen

the girls were about 50/50 long hair to short hair
and
the boys were about 30/70 long hair to short hair.

And
lots of girls had undercuts so that when their hair is up they have very short hair at the sides/back

onlythreenow · 11/06/2022 02:33

It's shortish now but even when it's very long it requires the exact same level of effort.

Once again, that depends on the hair. Even when my hair is only chin or shoulder length it takes ages to dry (I don't use a dryer), and I am forever faffing around trying to make it look okay, and trying to find the perfect hair products. When it's really short I do absolutely nothing to it - wash and go.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 11/06/2022 06:21

I love my short hair, it looks shit longer.

Although I did get lots of 'friends' saying how they could never be as brave Confused
