New job sold as something it wasn't.

This is the second time I've written this (lost the first one) so I'll try and keep it to the point.

I've been a SAHM to my DC for the past 4 years. My youngest is starting school in September so I would have gone back to work then but an opportunity presented itself about 3 months ago that seemed to good to be true.

I've ruined my life for the sake of this job. I'm sworn and shouted at. Spoken down to and unsupported. Haven't been given proper guidance or training. Each piece of feedback conflicts with the last so nothing makes sense. Today I have a catch-up and every single point was negative. I'm not perfect but I know my work is good. I feel like I'm being sabotaged by my manager but I have no idea why as she chose to hire me.

This sounds ridiculous but she's 'joked' that she wanted to throw acid at me on several occasions (prompted by an office discussion about something on the telly). My mental health is on the floor but if I leave without a new job to go to it will destroy us financially.

I was poorly over the weekend and caught myself daydreaming about how nice it would be to be hospitalised so I wouldn't have to go to work. I would never harm myself in reality but that's how bad things are. I don't know what I'm asking for really. I just needed to vent because I feel so lost.

Call recruiters about temporary contract work to tide you through.

Contact ACAS and police about the acid comment, and leave.

saveforthat · 12/06/2022 15:49

Op. Just to repeat what others have said. The money is not worth your mental and physical health. What if you become so stressed you have a heart attack? Go sick get SSP and spend the time you would have been at work job hunting. And yes, report the acid comment to the police

MissMaple82 · 12/06/2022 15:59

Go long term sick, during this time keep searching for another role. Your health comes first and you are not there to be spoken to like that. I'd consider even pitting in a formal complaint

Tohaveandtohold · 12/06/2022 16:09

Op, if you have a day off in the week, go to those recruitment agencies on the high street, someone I know works as a recruiter in one of these places and they always have lots of jobs available, many of them are temporary or temp to permanent roles but it’s something you can get quite easily whilst you then start searching for a better job with ease.
Also if you’re not getting interviews, is it possible that your CV is not written well enough to draw attention of the recruiters. It might be worth paying some money to have your CV reviewed and rewritten, it can make so much difference
You can’t stay that role you described, no job is worth your mental health really

If you hadn't taken this job three months ago, then you would be in the same situation you were in before - a SAHM. So by leaving, you aren't making your financial situation any worse than it already was anyway.

You absolutely have to leave immediately, this person is treating you appallingly.

Read the thread. She was on UC before and would be without for a month between quitting and getting payments. This would mean they couldn't cover their bills that month.

BridgesofMadisonfan · 12/06/2022 17:01

I'm not sure you can claim UC if you voluntarily give up your job? Have you checked this?

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 17/06/2022 20:15

Hi everyone, sorry for the disappearance I've just been trying to keep my head down and get on with things.

I've got an interview on Thursday! No idea how I'm going to get the day off yet but I will. Less hours but we'd be ok and overall a better job to be honest that would work really well for us as a family. Please keep your fingers crossed!

OP posts:
Gagagardener · 17/06/2022 20:29

Good luck! Go in there and get it - then come back and tell us..x

Sparkletastic · 17/06/2022 20:30

Good luck OP I hope the interview goes well. Take the day off sick with diarrhoea and vomiting. If you have to go back to the job either try a numb dissociation persona or respond to everything with 'What did you say to me?' and very obviously reach for a notebook and write it down immediately.

beastlyslumber · 17/06/2022 20:37

Good luck OP! You'll ace it!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 17/06/2022 20:43

good luck! That sounds beyond insane, and I’ve done my time in bizarre family-run publishing companies. Have you looked at Creative Access? It’s designed to support people from under-represented backgrounds getting into the creative industries. Everyone who’s not white middle-class and from loaded families is under-represented in publishing. creativeaccess.org.uk

Hi all!

Just wanted to update to say that I had a job interview on Thursday that I think went well and should hear back in the next couple of days or so. I also have another one this week so fingers crossed!

More than that though, I had a conversation with DH and my extended family about just how bad things have been and they all encouraged me to had in my notice. I'm officially out of there on Friday but has fate would have it I've actually been extremely poorly this weekend and to be honest I don't know if I'll be able to go to work for at least the next few days (I suffer with ulcers and the stress must have aggravated them as I haven't been able to keep anything down for days). Now I'm thinking I'll possible ask to be signed off this week.

OP posts:
EntertainingandFactual · 28/06/2022 08:26

Definitely get signed off.

Sloth66 · 28/06/2022 08:46

What an awful situation, I Hope you feel better asap and get offered a decent job asap as well.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 01/07/2022 17:12

Hello!

So in the last week I've had two interviews and unfortunately found out today I didn't get either of them.

I'm very disheartened but still grateful to be finished with my last job. My GP is sorting a fit note for UC (as to be fair he did warn prior to me starting working he didn't think it was a good idea) so that's sorted too.

Thanks for your update , glad you’re getting some breathing space 😊

FarFarFarAndAway · 05/07/2022 14:55

OP, you are a trier and you will get a good job, just keep going! Glad you are going off sick, you cannot continue there. Crossed fingers the right job comes up for you soon.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 05/07/2022 18:38

Thank you all so much for your kind words and support. I have another interview on Monday, same position and at the same place as one of the other interviews so I'm hopeful that is a positive sign that I didn't completely fuck up the last one 😂

OP posts:
Colette · 06/07/2022 09:14

That’s great, good luck . Think of the other interviews as trial runs

That sounds promising. Possible that, last time, you were a good candidate but someone else just had a slight edge over you eg more experience. Did you get feedback after your last interview?

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 06/07/2022 17:07

@notanothertakeaway It was pretty much that they'd really enjoyed meeting me and not to be discouraged that I didn't get the position. Should I wish to apply for other positions in the same area I could always do x, y and z to give myself an edge. 3 days later they then contacted me again with the offer of another interview. I'm hoping that's a good sign?

OP posts:
notanothertakeaway · 06/07/2022 17:16

@SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace oh yes, that sounds very positive

Glittertwins · 06/07/2022 20:02

Good luck OP, it will come good. DH had exactly the same kind of treatment by his boss and it was that bad mentally too. He was applying for new jobs within 3 months of starting as well. It worked out for him - hope it does for you too.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 11/07/2022 18:35

I'm so pleased to be back with a positive update!

I had an interview today and less than 3 hours after I left I got a call to that they'd been impressed and wanted to offer me the job!
