To think if you have a driveway

Parking in our little cul de sac has become a bit of a problem lately. We previously had access to a communal space for years but the landowners have now fenced this off and we are unable to use. So out of 18 houses there are 4 houses without driveways. Unfortunately some of those with driveways have started parking on the road so no one else can park near those peoples houses and there really is nowhere else to park. AIBU to think if you have a driveway then bloody park in it and don't be selfish and object to people parking near your house.

Without knowing the individuals involved personally I'd hazard a guess they are doing that as they found they were getting blocked in or access to their drives was made difficult with how other people were parking. Not because they have a real preference for road parking.

Sistanotcista · 09/06/2022 19:30

Well, we have a driveway. Which I used to park on, but now don’t, because other people on the street would park over the dropped kerb and block me in. So now I park in the street, and the driveway remains empty, which is a shame.

Why do only some of the houses on your cul de sac have driveways?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/06/2022 19:31

Why? Are they saving their drive ways for visitors? Seems odd to me

Moosake · 09/06/2022 19:31

They probably find it hard to use their driveway as people are parking too close/over it/opposite it.

Sistanotcista · 09/06/2022 19:31

@SummaLuvin - we cross posted. You perfectly summed up our experience!

Sirzy · 09/06/2022 19:32

Assuming the parking of cars doesn’t make access to and from the drives difficult then your not being unreasonable.

Haha same!

Only half our street have driveways, but it was built in 1950s and we can't get our car (a ford focus) on the drive AND open the doors to get in and out.

Generally however if you can fit your car on the drive way and ppl don't block you in etc then yes, it would make sense to park there

Thewayis · 09/06/2022 19:35

As above, I have a friend who now has to park on the street as she kept getting blocked in - empty double driveway but I don't blame her!

Miracle101 · 09/06/2022 19:36

It'll be because people park like dicks outside their houses and it makes it very hard to get your car on and off the driveway. You don't have to be overhanging the drop to be completely in the way and a nuisance.

No, those without a drive don’t have any more right to the spaces than anyone else does.

RandomUsernameHere · 09/06/2022 19:37

They have just as much right to park on the road as you though

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/06/2022 19:38

I live on a cul de sac. I park on the road. I started doing this because residents without a driveway regularly parked opposite our driveway, making it virtually impossible to get off due to the angle. I'm also near a school so it can be doubly ridiculous at times.

Currently awaiting double yellows and I cannot wait!

saliwales2022 · 09/06/2022 19:39

I have a driveway and always park my car on it.

Lizzieismagic · 09/06/2022 20:09

Ime of our neighbours parks on our permit only street. Permits start at £15 a year.
She verbally abuses anyone who parks outside her window as it blocks her light.
So she parks on front of ndn's window.
SHE OWNS A CAR PARK! It is kept permanently locked.
No logic.

bellac11 · 09/06/2022 20:13

My OH doesnt always part on the drive because if he does and I park behind him, he then cant get out without moving my car, and if he leaves at 630am, he doesnt need that hassle and its also difficult space wise, moving one car to somewhere else on the street while he moves the other one back in.

So either one of us would be on the road dependent on whether the one in front needs to get out.

FrankLampardsBrokenHand · 09/06/2022 20:15

I think its a safe assumption that people with a drive who choose to park on the road probably have a good reason for it.

Same.

It's not great, but if people weren't twats about my drive, I'd park on it!

BeaLola · 09/06/2022 20:24

We are very lucky in our cul de sac that everyone has a driveway and everyone parks their car or cars on them which leaves the road clear or visitors and deliveries

housemaus · 09/06/2022 20:27

As PPs have said, they're entitled to and might be doing so because their drive is too narrow/people block them in/it's easier for them for whatever reason.

I doubt they're doing it just because they object to someone parking near their house - one weirdo maybe, but it'd be very strange for multiple people to suddenly be like that!

FlissyPaps · 09/06/2022 20:36

YABU.

Those with driveways have as much right as you do to park on the road. I understand your frustration if it makes it difficult to park outside your house, but there’s nothing you can do. Unless you buy a house with a drive way and park in it.

I have a drive way, but it is so narrow it’s just not practical to use. Same for the rest of us on the street. No one moans that we park on the road and leave our drives empty.

JADS · 09/06/2022 20:49

We have a double width driveway and 3 cars which would fit comfortably on. We aren't allowed to drop the curb across the full width and have this fucking tiny space that is really only suitable for a mini/fiat 500/smart car outside our house. Unfortunately people with massive cars park there which makes it impossible to get out of the drive so I park our third car in that space as it is small. That probably makes me a dick, but I don't care. Dropping the entire curb would actually make more sense as the road is really narrow and the houses opposite have no drives so park on the road, but computer says no and all that.

This.

our cul de sac all have driveways for 3-4 cars but one man who lives alone parks his car on the road outside his house because if he doesn’t the family opposite who have about 5 cars always park one of them directly opposite his drive making it virtually impossible to get on and off because of the angle.

Threeboysandadog · 09/06/2022 20:59

I have a driveway but park on the road outside our front window. If park on the driveway then someone from the next street parks their big work vehicle outside our window which drives dh mad. It doesn’t actually bother me at all but I do it for an easy life.

tempnamechangee · 09/06/2022 21:07

Thanks for all your replies. I've honestly come to the conclusion that some people are just entitled knobs and look down on people whose houses are worth less than theirs.

Entitled twats.

Thanks for reading normal people 😊
