To think if you have a driveway

Parking in our little cul de sac has become a bit of a problem lately. We previously had access to a communal space for years but the landowners have now fenced this off and we are unable to use. So out of 18 houses there are 4 houses without driveways. Unfortunately some of those with driveways have started parking on the road so no one else can park near those peoples houses and there really is nowhere else to park. AIBU to think if you have a driveway then bloody park in it and don't be selfish and object to people parking near your house.

My entire street has driveways and you literally need to use the road with a pram or wheelchair (or shopping bag in each hand!) because the entire pavement is filled with cars.

You could however fit a seven year old on a bike and forget to tell them to be careful. I won't lie and say the thought hasn't crossed my mind.

It's just total laziness I think - and makes trying to get pulled out of my little culdisac a nightmare. I'd be totally fucked if my house caught fire.

Ok in summary

Some people care about others.

Some people don't.

I know which camp I'm in.

I just feel sad that I live amongst a bunch of such selfish idiots.

I'd just block their empty drives and if they complain say you'd noticed they didn't actually use their drives do you're unsure as to why they are complaint.

I'd be happy to park in their driveways.

Ask your neighbours who have empty drive ways if you can rent it off them and park there?

Blocking it off (even if it’s empty) over a dropped kerb is an obstruction and really petty OP.

bumblefeline · 09/06/2022 22:41

You have a nasty attitude OP.

We have to park on the road sometimes as arseholes park right over the dropped curb making it hard to get out. Might do it more now in the hope it winds someone like you up.

The people with driveways are being utter twats complaining about people parking near their houses, unless people are blocking their driveways.

Havent seen a single post of someone complaining about people parking near their houses.

NOBODY has the right to dictate where others park their cars, wether their house has a drive way or not.

FFS people, be grateful you have the funds to run a car at the moment. If you want a drive way, then buy a house with a drive way. If you need access straight outside your home due to disabilities etc.
then apply for a disabled spot.

Jesus.

Havent seen a single post of someone complaining about people parking near their houses.

Can you read? The OP literally says some of those with driveways have started parking on the road so no one else can park near those peoples houses

Read the first post before making yourself look foolish.

That doesn’t mention anyone complaining. Did you quote the wrong post?

I can read perfectly, thanks.

My response was to the user that stated “The people with driveways are being utter twats complaining about people parking near their houses, unless people are blocking their driveways.”

That user wasn’t the OP. CAN YOU READ?

Again, I haven’t seen any post on this thread from people who have drive ways that are complaining about people parking near their houses.

LemonPledge555 · 09/06/2022 22:59

House opposite me has 2 adults (mum and dad), late teens/early 20s son and a younger son about 13/14. Drive fits two cars. She parks her car on the drive. The dad has kind of claimed one of the communal spots. They got the older son a car when he started learning around 3 years ago and I shit you not, it’s sat on the drive in the second space that whole time. Never moved, flat tyres, SORN’d the whole shebang. What a bloody waste. Older son had his own car, there is plenty more communal parking at our part of the street, yet he bumps it up the kerb and it irritates the actual shit out of me that they have 4 cars and only 3 drivers. They are knobs. I’m also irrational but I don’t even care!

LakieLady · 09/06/2022 22:59

I have a drive and never park in it.

It's on a fairly steep slope, I have arthiritc knees and getting in and out on such a slope is fucking excruciating. The road is level, and much easier.

If it pisses off my neighbours, that's just tough shit.

It doesn’t matter if anyone on posting on this thread isn’t complaining. OP says people with driveways have started parking on the road so no one else can park near their houses. That is a shitty thing to do, unless people are blocking the driveways.

I don’t know why you are responding to my post if you can’t even be bothered to read it properly.

sandragreen · 09/06/2022 23:18

YABU

They have just as much right to park on the road as you do.

Parking wars are just one of the reasons I would never live in a cul de sac again.

huuskymam · 09/06/2022 23:21

When we first moved into our home, my husband parked on the road, only had 1 car ar the tíme. Our neighbour had a huge van and always parked blocking part of our drive, my husband would leave for work at 4.30am so couldn't knock them up. Now he parks in a spare bay and I park in the drive cause we have considerate neighbours.

😂😂😂

I don’t think you’re understanding what I mean.

You said The people with driveways are being utter twats complaining about people parking near their houses, unless people are blocking their driveways

I responded by saying I haven’t seen any post on this thread from people who have drive ways that are complaining about people parking near their houses.

& I still haven’t. Please point out a post on this thread from someone with a driveway who is being a twat and complaining about someone parking near there house.

That’s why I’m responding to your posts.

Don’t really know why you’re dishing out the “can’t you read” and “you’re making yourself look foolish” as none of it makes sense. Funny though 😂

IMO, OP is petty, and thinks she owns the road and anyone with a driveway MUST park on it and the leave the road clear for all the people who aren’t fortunate enough to own a drive.

JaceLancs · 09/06/2022 23:36

I live in a cul de sac where all the houses have drives - length varies
on my drive you can get 5 cars behind each other but it involves much moving around
as there is only DS and I - one person parks on drive and other parks on road in front
some houses have 5 cars and only shorter drives for 1-2 cars which is where the problems start……..

Whisperance · 10/06/2022 07:00

Yes they probably should. Do you get a say who used public road, no.
We had a driveway at our old house. It was thin, steep and some a hole parked trailers directly opposite so we couldn't turn the right angle to get in it.
So you bet I used the street.

Svara · 10/06/2022 07:10

As long as it's fair, such as second cars parked in driveway (or further away if no driveway) so everyone is taking the same one space then I don't see the problem. I don't use mine as it's around the back and my one small car fits outside my house without infringing on anyone else's.

LittleMissMoggy · 10/06/2022 11:44

Look at the counter arguement OP. Some people possibly had to pay more money in rent or house price for a driveway (or sacrificed having a front garden maybe). Therefore, they may wonder why others should get free parking whilst they paid for it. I do agree in general about using drives where possible and not being petty for the sake of it. However, there are reasons why using a drive is not always practical, and ultimately no one has more right than anyone else to park on a public highway.

Costacoffeeplease · 10/06/2022 11:49

Wow, you seem delightful op

LakieLady · 10/06/2022 11:59

Good luck with that. I don't know what other councils are like, but in my county they will only designate a disabled bay for people who are eligible for a blue badge.

While one of my clients was waiting to get PIP, she applied for a blue badge and was turned down after assessment. They reckoned she didn't need it.

Her mobility is so bad that she got higher rate mobility PIP, which then entitled her to the blue badge they'd refused a few weeks earlier.

Shows how poor their assessment was imo.

Blossomtoes · 10/06/2022 12:05

At last the truth comes out, this is all about your resentment at the people with the nicer houses

A house with a drive isn’t nicer, it’s a house with off street parking. The irony of MN who would never entertain buying a house without off street parking an then defend not using it. It’s a parallel universe.

user1497207191 · 10/06/2022 12:17

Not only people parking right up to your dropped kerb meaning you can't swing around if the road is narrow, but also people parking directly opposite your drive on a narrow road, meaning you literally can't get in/out of your drive. Even if the road is normal width, someone parking opposite and two people parking right up to your dropped kerb, and you'll really struggle to get in/out without multiple forwards/backwards movements.

If people didn't park opposite drives and up to your dropped kerb on narrow roads, more people would use their drives!

mummyh2016 · 10/06/2022 12:23

Unless there is massive back story it is very unlikely that your neighbours are parking on the road to piss you off.
If parking close to where you live is important to you you need a house with a drive. You can't dictate where your neighbours park as long as it's legal,

We currently have a skip directly opposite our drive. Combined with people parking too far over the drop kerb we simply can't use the drive. And I can't risk putting it on the drive if the drop kerb is clear, in case someone parks there and I can't get out in the morning.

Sistanotcista · 10/06/2022 14:13

BrieAndChilli · 09/06/2022 21:40

But surely those of you that park on the road because you don’t want people to block your drive as it makes it too difficult are just parking across the entrance to your drive so not taking up any actual spaces? So there should be the same amount of parking for other poeple? If you park across your drive then it is effectively the same as if you parked on your drive. No-one else would be affected.
if you don’t park across your drive then why not? That IS selfish as your drive is taking up a ‘space’ on the road and then you are parking in another space.

I do t park across my drive because I understood it was an offence/illegal to park over a dropped kerb.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 10/06/2022 14:22

Erm maybe the nicer houses are the ones with environmentally friendly pretty front gardens not concrete jungles

What a bizarre comment. Lots of houses have a driveway and a bee-friendly front garden. You’re coming across as very jealous of people with driveways 😂

They have just as much right as you to park on the road. Maybe they struggle getting in and out of a driveway or neighbours park too close or opposite so they can’t get in/out? Or they’re saving their drive for visitors or a second/third car?

Personally it irritates me when people park right outside our house, it spoils the view and feels a bit intrusive, and makes it harder for me to get on and off my driveway. Especially vans and big vehicles.

If parking is so important to you why not choose a house with a driveway? It’s nobody else’s fault your house doesn’t have one! Presumably you weren’t forced to live there.
