Or was she? Charity shop purchase.

I went in a charity shop yesterday and saw a set of figurines, 6 of them for £20.

I asked if I could buy 2 of them separately and the lady said no, they're a set. Fair enough. I had a few other bits to get from other shops, so left without them.

Whilst shopping I googled the figures hoping to get them from ebay or somewhere, as I only liked 2 of them. Turns out they end up at around 10/12 quid individually with postage anyways so 20 for 6 was very good.

I went back in and asked for the set. I paid the £20 and said to the lady "I only really want these 2, you can keep the other 4"

She told me they come as a set and you cannot but them individually.
I said I'm not asking to buy them individually, I'm paying the full price but only taking 2.

She told me I wasn't allowed to do that.

I said I'm keeping 2 and donating back the other 4 and that she could sell them as a set of 4.

She was adamant I want allowed to do that and made me take all 6 of them :s

I walked into the charity shop 2 doors down and donated the 4 I didn't want.

AIBU to think the whole things was just ridiculous?

She was really huffy and abrupt with me about it, like I was trying to rip them off or break the sacred rules or something!

"Or buy the whole thing at the till then try to leave behind the parts you didn’t want? People treat charity shops and their workers like crap."

Trying to donate something back to the shop is hardly 'treating charity shop workers like crap'.

JiggleJiggleFold · 09/06/2022 11:36

To make things even WEIRDER...

I've just been passed and the 4 figurines are in the window of the shop I bough them from 😂

I went in and asked in the shop I donated them in and apparently they are sister shops and share stock. Person had no idea why they were taken back to original shop though.

Funny though!!

The manager sounds like a very foolish individual.

TheOrigRights · 09/06/2022 11:38

Charity shops are not the place to get arsey about customer services, your consumer rights and playing by the book.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/06/2022 11:38

"you wouldn’t behave this awfully in JL because it’s “naice”, but you think it’s OK to behave this way in a charity shop"

Behave this awfully?
Really?
I think you need to see some awful behaviour and get a reality check.
And yes, you can leave the things you don't want at a 'normal' shop. In the past I've asked them to cut the tags off for me, for example and they've never come back with 'the clothes are sold with the tags, you must keep them'.

Charity shops are not the place to get arsey about customer services, your consumer rights and playing by the book.

Why not? They get a rates discounts so they contribute less to their local area than other shops. You can complain about the service if you want to.

Charity shops are not the place to get arsey about customer services, your consumer rights and playing by the book.

Many charity shops these days want incredibly high prices for their items so I think that, if they're going to charge high prices like a 'proper' shop then they should behave like a proper shop and treat customers with a bit of respect and politeness.

Sarah3587 · 09/06/2022 11:40

Maybe she has special needs and that’s why she’s very rigid about it being a set.

Sarah3587 · 09/06/2022 11:44

yellowsmileyface · 09/06/2022 10:51

I don't understand why you didn't just take the 6 figurines and sell on the ones you didn't want.

As someone who's volunteered in a charity shop, it's very hard work and it can be annoying when a customer tries to complicate things, even if it's in a way that objectively makes sense.

Even if she was a manager, the paid staff really don't get paid enough for how demanding and exhausting the job is.

You’ve obviously never been a waitress then 😂

Kona84 · 09/06/2022 11:44

The lady may be vulnerable, learning difficulties, autism maybe.

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/06/2022 11:50

I've had similar.

Books on offer, 10 for £1. I only saw one I wanted, but I really did want it so took it to the till.

Woman at till (WaT): They're ten for a pound at the moment

Me: Yes, thanks, but Only want this one. But I'll give you £1 for it.

WaT: You have to buy ten. I can't sell you one.

Me: I've looked, but there aren't any more I want. I'm happy to pay £1 for this one.

WaT: You can't. You have to have 10. I can't let you have one.

Me: Who can let me have one?

WaT: The manager

Me: Can I speak to the manager please

WaT: ARIADNE!!! (not real name)

Ariadne: Yes?

Wat: This person wants to buy just one book.

Me (helpfully): I'll pay the full £1 for it

WaT: I've told her they're 10 for £1

Ariadne: Yes. 10 for £1. You have to buy 10.

Me: I don't want 10. I just want this one.

Ariadne (rather snottily): We have a wide range of books. I'"m sure you can find something.

Me: Ok

SO I went back, grabbed 9 random books, and took them to the till.

Smugly they smiled as I paid.

Smugly I smiled as I left the other 9 in their "donations box"

"You can't do that!!!"

"I just did"

HarryStottel · 09/06/2022 11:51

I'm voting YABU because of the ridiculous drip feed, and parts of your account that seem , let's say, a little embellished.

I would imagine that even a charity shop manager has reasons for not wanting to comply with your request, maybe they have had people do this and then come back , demanding the rest of items or something ' free' after they have thought about it.

The easiest way for them to deal with it is to insist the person take what they paid for. They are under no obligation to explain their policies or rationale behind this.

You would possibly encounter the same issue if only wanted one book , and it was buy one get one free. There are legitimate stock control and till entry reasons why you can't just say ' Oh I'm not bothered about a second' .

Ah, well done you, you really got one over on those two women volunteering their time for a charity. [slow clap]

thedancingbear · 09/06/2022 12:04

Yes, she wasn't being very logical. Give her a break.

Disagree.

Sounds like a typical jobsworth charity shop assistant! It seems to be compulsory that to work in a charity shop you have to huff and puff as loudly as possible

Maybe you should give up your time and volunteer and show them how it should be done? These people are doing this for free and a number are vulnerable and still doing their bit. Drop the contempt please!

Hmmmm. OK then

They want to get rid of them! When they do 10 for £1 it means they have too many in stock. They are at a low price because it's cheaper for them than paying someone to take them away. So it isn't helpful or supportive to give 9 books back.

godmum56 · 09/06/2022 12:10

Tinkity · 09/06/2022 11:08

Uh-oh, do you not watch horror movies? The simple answer is the figures are haunted.

Lady in the shop gives you an ominous warning that the figures MUST stay together as a set however you disregard her warning and break up the set which releases the evil trapped in the figures. Things then start to go bump in the night (knocked over vases, objects not where you left them, strange noises) which you ignore at first but then before you know it, you’re being full scale terrorised by the figures.

Desperate, you go back to the shop where the lady chastises you for not heeding her warnings and gives you the full backstory, basically (delete as appropriate) these six figures are cursed / contain trapped demons / are haunted by the spirits of insane serial killers who possessed them when their maximum security prison burnt down and the only way to stop them is to reunite the set. You then spend the rest of the movie trying to track down the other four figures (who have naturally been sold to four different people who unbeknownst to you, are also being terrorised). At first no one will believe you, but eventually you will form a Scooby gang of helpers (each will have a specialist skill) who will help you on your search all while trying to stay alive from the terrorising figures who are in pursuit!

I wish you well OP!

love this!

I think the spirit of the post was in that the staff were being ridiculous - not ‘getting one over’ on volunteer staff. And they can be arsey. I used to have a potter around a particular charity shop in our high street quite regularly until a couple of years ago. I was browsing one day and noticed that a member of staff was following my wheelchair around the shop, watching me like a hawk. When I was about to leave she stopped me and proceeded to tell me not to come in to the shop again as my wheelchair posed a ‘safety issue’. Despite myself and a couple of other shoppers telling her this was illegal and discriminatory, she wouldn’t budge. It didn’t sit well with me to report it because she was a volunteer. I just never went back.

adlitem · 09/06/2022 12:11

@entropynow no, of course not. But a smug post about how PP got the better of them makes PP look no better than them. And they were just trying to do their jobs....

She was the manager, not a volunteer. So unlikely.
