To be concerned that the Depp/Heard trial has put off genuine DV victims from coming forward?

1000 replies

PetraBP · 09/06/2022 09:23

The Depp/Heard trial was troubling to me.

On the one hand, people do sometimes make false allegations, especially after relationship breakups.

On the other hand, dragging someone to court for alleging domestic violence might deter some women from reporting it.

Assuming the court got it right and Depp was not a perpetrator, how could he have handled the situation so that it would not put domestic violence victims off coming forward for fear of being sued?

Worrying all round.

Take care tiddy and matriarch

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 17:03

I think Amber is disconnected from reality. You mean her fan fiction?

I'm am praying her PR team stop the whole thing going out. It's beyond ridiculous now. Doubt they can and do they have any control?

Someone has to? Her father, sister?

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 17:04

I doubt her sister will intervene to stop her.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 15/06/2022 17:39

I don't think anyone will intervene. Instead there will be backlash and all the people around her and her, will blame JD. That eve woman had the cheek to say JD wasn't stopping his fans, like why should he? You can't' expect someone to step in. On your behalf when you're being rude and abusive to them.

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 17:48

I think Eve is actually Amber using her account. Just a guess.

Yes prob Whitney won't. I think her father who is the beginning of her problems possibly could I don't know.

I don't like what she's doing but I can also see this is someone in need of help. Of course she has a voice but this isn't the way.

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 17:57

EJB is talking about it now from a lawyers perspective

BlanketsBanned · 15/06/2022 18:07

She says she is scared JD will sue her again for defamation but I dont think anyone is interested in feeding her any more drama, the trial is over, the jury came to their verdict, thats it, its done. Silence is usually the best response.

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 19:52

"I accept the verdict in a court of law. I don't agree with it but I will now focus on my child and on rebuilding my life"

That's all she needs to do.

Watch Emily, it's a long one but she's in disbelief. She knows her stuff, she's represented DV survivors many times.

TiddyTidTwo · 15/06/2022 20:01

Just started watching this. Headline "bad idea" so thought it would be interesting. This is a PR perspective

JamieNorthlife · 15/06/2022 20:59

@TiddyTidTwo, thank you for sharing the EJB youtube link. I just watched it. Wow ... I thought I read somewhere that amber heard wanted to take time away from the public, but now she is giving interviews????

Not a good idea to give this very confusing interview.

This is awful. Why are you watching videos of random people picking over every aspect of her body language and "personality disorders" (as diagnosed by JDs psychologist)?
Imagine if someone made videos like this on YouTube about you. It turns my stomach. It's basically bullying on a huge scale.

AdamRyan · 16/06/2022 08:26

I really think something needs to be done about Internet content. I can't see how it's ok to have random unqualified people making videos like this.

It's absolutely fucking hideous, and it's almost always women at the butt of this widescale public character excoriation. MSM and SM are driving it, and people seem to think so uncritically these days that they willingly follow unquestioningly where they are led. Examples are legion: Lindy Chamberlain, Joanne Lees, J K Rowling, Diana Windsor, Charlene of Monaco, and now, more particularly, Amber Heard and Meghan Markle. Note what these people all have in common. They're female.

It's never men. Put a label of 'mad' on any woman and it sticks, and effectively silences her. The late Diana was a prime example of a very effective PR campaign which had the world thinking she was nuts. Ditto Charlene. And there's a level of fixation with Heard demonstrated by some posters on this thread - not least the 'fan fic' upthread - that's distasteful to the point of disturbing.

You don't 'know' her or Depp. As for the confident diagnosis of her 'narcissism', this is an exceptionally rare condition yet every second person claims to know a 'narc', or somehow think themselves competent to effect a diagnosis (via the internet, no less). Cop on. Anyone truly granted with such amazing insight might want to look into a mirror and do a bit of self-reflection on what's driving their extreme projection, or inciting them to behave toward women in this way. Heard is not your 'ex'. She's nothing to do with you or life. The case was not about you.

No wonder the posters who originally posted this thread and engaged with the nuances of the issue have long since lost patience with it.

IrisVersicolor · 16/06/2022 09:53

Posters on MN are very confused between “narcissism “ which is a common trait - selfish, self-centred, lack of empathy etc; and pathological narcissism in the form of NPD which is a serious mental disorder, rare, as others have said.

TiddyTidTwo · 16/06/2022 09:59

Yep, censorship is always the answer when people don't believe what you do. How very dare they!

You're confused your self. Narcissistic is the trait, narcissism is the condition.

Not sure if Amber is a narcissist or has BPD/HPD as the good doctor said as they have many overlaps. She's clearly not just narcissistic at times. Her behaviour goes way beyond that and is constant.

The mainstream media has tended to be TeamAmber. Many outlets still are, even now after all her lies have been exposed.

Social media has some TeamAmber types but the majority can see her for what she is, a horrible woman who lied to get revenge and tried to destroy someone's life to get back at him for being slighted. It's not as if there isn't a lack of evidence to prove her lies.

That's why there's so much hate for her; she deserves it. She lied and has been lying for six years and is still lying now. Almost everyone can see that with the exception of some (but certainly not all) feminists. It isn't an anti-woman thing at all. Women hate her most of all. We hate her because she was the real abuser and lied about being a victim.

Let's not pretend there was a large number of people who hated Diana or hate J K Rowling. Diana's death caused a hear hysterical outburst of national grieving and only woke fascists hate Rowling, not normal people. People find Meghan annoying because she is another lying narcissist and a tiresome, preachy hypocrite to boot.

TiddyTidTwo · 16/06/2022 11:18

Exactly @buttersbottom

All nuance is ignored in my posts and cherry picked so I refuse to engage with the same posters over and over again, who hop on to try and close down my posts which I think invite discussion on the topic. It's AIBU and if they don't like it go back to their more intelligent "nuanced" thread, which is so superior to this one.

AH continues to put herself out there for us "randos" to form our opinion. To which we are entitled to as she invites it and it's free speech which is one of her favourite lines.

Aspiringmatriarch · 16/06/2022 11:59

It's absolutely fucking hideous, and it's almost always women at the butt of this widescale public character excoriation.

Case in point.

Petition to remove Amber Heard from Aquaman: over 4.5 million signatures.

Petition to remove Ezra Miller from The Flash: less than a thousand signatures.

It's not censorship. In all other types of content, you can't post an uninformed "reaction" because it would be libellous.

That content creator admits they aren't an expert and then goes on to talk about Amber's "personality disorders" and how in their opinion those disorders can be seen in her body language. Those "personality disorder" diagnoses were contested in the court case and even if they weren't, they should be handled sensitively and confidentially not made the subject of speculative youtube videos.

In my opinion that video is defamatory but there are so many like that out there that it's impossible to sue all the individual content creators. Something needs to be done to protect people from this bullying. It's disproportionate, unfair and as marie says, targeted at women.

This is not about my personal views on AH. This is about whether there are any circumstances that justify this response on social media. Its hate speech as far as I'm concerned and as usual women aren't protected from that.

AdamRyan · 16/06/2022 12:12

And also, a "nuanced" discussion would be about why some people think a person who may or may not have a personality disorder is fair game for large scale public humiliation like this. Not picking over the evidence for the PD as a justification for the videos.

AdamRyan · 16/06/2022 12:13

I've not been commenting on here recently because it was clear that my opinions aren't shared or wanted, but I have to speak up against bullying, especially when it's clearly influenced by sexism.
