Is it OK that my wife never takes our son outside?

looking for some advice. My wife and I have a 4 year old, and he, like all 4 year olds is full of energy and enthusiasm for life. i work full time from home and also have a second job. She works one shift a week.

Over the past 6 months I’ve noticed that she never leaves the house with our son unless it’s to meet a friend at the pub. Other than that she sits in front of the TV all day while he either watches it too or draws or plays with his toys. But the tv is always on. She sits there scrolling through IG watching shows I’d generally consider not ideal for a four year old….think Real Housewife’s of Wherever, SATC etc. I know our son is not being neglected, but is this normal behaviour to do 4 days a week?

my wife gets up around 9am (when I go to work) after I’ve fed our son and she always does her own thing from 3pm onwards each day. She doesn’t cook or him or me and all washing and bedtime duties are my responsibility.

Am I being unreasonable to expect her to take my son to the park/playground (even in our own back garden) at least once every couple of days? While I do enjoy doing these things with him myself I feel like she could be doing more with him during the day.

im worries that once he starts kindergarten/school she’s going to miss out on this time and regret not being more active with him.

Am I being unfair to expect these things?

As others have said, there is definitely something going on such as depression, etc. It isn't right, and watching shows like satc with him is highly inappropriate too.

Talk to her, and if it isn't successful, is there a family member you can approach who can help urge her to get help? Good luck!

TheBiscuitEater · 07/06/2022 19:32

How does she feel about him starting next month?
Maybe you can suggest a family day out before he starts. Say it'll just be the three of you, you'll both leave your phones at home and make a day of it. Try and show her how wonderful family time is.
Phones can be sooo addicting, it sounds like she made a technology detox. Perhaps won't be easy to convince her to do though!

Perhaps 'you' can watch some ted talks about social media , smart phones etc when she's in earshot, she might be half listening....

It sounds like she's completely checked out of parenting. Was she like this when he was a newborn and small baby?

What do you think she would say if you told her that she is neglecting your son and that she has totally checked out of parenting?

ToffeepopsandRaindrops · 07/06/2022 19:56

People are quick to say depressed because it's a woman. If a wife posted about her husband plonking the kids in front of the TV all day he'd be called a lazy arse

I agree with this! If I’m completely honest I still think depression is a weak excuse and I’m someone who has suffered badly with it. The OP may well have been describing my own mother. Never took us anywhere as kids ever, I don’t even remember her being present if we were out playing in the garden. I think mumnets can be very naive at time when it comes to shit mums.

Sounds like most husbands tbf!
Hire a nanny if your worried, or send him to nursery you could drop him off at 8.30am and pick him up at 3?

How ridiculous!

Whether father or mother they're a lazy sod.

And I wouldn't automatically think she's depressed either. She just can't be arsed

hulahooper2 · 07/06/2022 20:18

She sounds lazy , and this is neglect

Will the school staff do home visits before he starts in July?

Many schools do that where I am (US). Check if they do, and please don't let your wife postpone or cancel an appointment for such a visit.

The kindergarten will probably send out a questionnaire about your DS's life, personality, and interests either ahead of starting or soon afterwards. Make sure these are completed accurately and sent back to the school.

Who will be doing drop off and pick up?

OP I feel for your son. I also have a 4 year
old boy in Melbourne. So glad to read he’s starting kinder next month. Is he going 2 days a week? If there’s any chance you’re in the western suburbs I would love to offer to meet you and sometimes take your son to the park with my son, if that’s something you’re interested in, PM me :)

The time you posted in Australia would have been around 3am, do you always stay up that late or is it still half term??
