Can't have two red cars

happystrummer · 06/06/2022 21:32

We need another car as we both drive to work (live rurally). I literally dont care what colour the car is...my take is you cant see the colour while you are driving. After spending a week looking I have found a car that meets specs, age, mileage etc at a reasonable price. My other half has just said he doesnt want two red cars outside our house. He's huffing and puffing about it. I dont understand ..is this a thing? We live rurally, have only 3 direct neighbours. I cant imagine that we will be the talk of the village because we have two red cars outside our house.

AIBU wanting to buy another car which happens to be red when we already have a red car or should I find another colour car.

Henry Ford: “A customer can have a car painted any color he wants as long as it’s black”. Who are such as we to argue with Henry Ford?

SedentaryCat · 07/06/2022 09:11

I wanted a red car but because DH already had one I decided against it. Didn't want it to be like matching anoraks! Same manufacturer, so same red and similar styling. Mines a nicer colour

Didn't bother me in the past when we both had silver cars though.

Stephenthesupersquirrel · 07/06/2022 09:14

2 the same colour here, and both in a colour we don’t really like/want! But the cars were both cancelled orders so were heavily discounted so we both ended up with them! (Mine was first though by a year 😂)

GentlemanJay · 07/06/2022 09:14

I know a husband and wife that have identical white Mazda SUVs.

godmum56 · 07/06/2022 09:15

honestly, the colour of the car is the last thing I think about when choosing. A good tool can't be a bad colour.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/06/2022 09:17

We have one red car and one black. I've list the black car a few times in car parks as I'm looking for red ones (DH and I swap depending on what we are doing... ones a Landrover and ones a Clio)

Common sign that swingers live there.

No way 🥺 We’ve got two black cars. Is that what all our neighbours are saying about us? 😱

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/06/2022 09:20

Once I lived in a street of 6 houses. Between us we had 5 white landrovers, similar ages, different specs, similar number plates (there was two digits different between ours and a neighbours...). That did look barmy. There was a good deal on.

Sebastianthecoo · 07/06/2022 09:23

I used to snigger a bit at a couple in our street who had matching cars, one black and one white with private number plates with their three letter names.

DH and I used talk about who was out and what they were up to, despite never meeting them just in that weird way you make up stories about the neighbours.

Now we have no neighbours and I miss that chat

cherrymax · 06/06/2022 21:46

I think it's because it will look intentional rather than you happened to buy a car in that colour. We are a red car household.

You may as well have matching cagoules.

Unless they have almost matching personalised reg numbers then no one else will even notice or care!!

Iheartmysmart · 07/06/2022 09:27

There’s a couple nearby to me who have matching cars and private number plates which are just a digit out from each other. What is totally batshit though is each time they change the cars they paint the front door to match them! In the last 10 years it’s been 4 different colours. Why they don’t just buy the same colour car each time is beyond me.

AlisonDonut · 07/06/2022 09:27

We used to have two red cars, one his and one mine. All was well. We even paid off our mortgage while we had them and - get this - some of our avocados were perfect upon cutting them open! I know!

Hope that helps.

Bootothegoose · 07/06/2022 09:38

Red cars are actually the cheapest to insure as statistically they are least likely to get into car accidents.

Not sure what relevance that has however. I think he's being silly. We have two blue cars... makes no odds. Red is a perfectly normal colour!

JudgeRindersMinder · 07/06/2022 09:40

If he doesn’t want to discuss it, he knows he’s being ridiculous! We’ve had 2 red cars in the past and now have 2 black and a silver

LindaEllen · 07/06/2022 09:45

I mean, I find it a bit weird, but there are so many cars out there would it really hurt to find one that isn't red?

TheDogsMother · 07/06/2022 09:46

We've got two black cars ! I thought I'd laid the swingers thing to rest when we dug the Pampas out of the front garden 😮

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 07/06/2022 10:03

I have a red car. I have zero interest in cars but I have to say it does lift the heart to have a red one, more than the others I've had (white, blue, green).
When I worked in a male-dominated industry (engineering) among people who were innovators, I noticed that the vast majority of the cars in the firm's carpark were red, so to me it is a positive, extrovert, go-getting colour.

MrsToothyBitch · 07/06/2022 10:05

I find his stance a bit odd tbh. He should get over it. My last car was a red Nissan micra (just like Jays in the Inbetweeners). It had to live on my parents drive for a bit; next to my mum's red Seat Mii. I can top that though, my current car is a red Suzuki. My mum liked it so much she sold her Seat and bought the same model immediately too, also red- exact match. Both second hand from the same dealer so not much choice on colour. My Suzuki lived on their drive a couple of times when I was waiting on parking & waiting to complete on a property. We still twin if I drive over and park there.

I can assure you no one assumed we were swingers and no one has commented adversely, crashed their cars or keeled over in horror at the sight and the house is still standing. My dad also bought the same Suzuki soon after that though. It's blue but DP calls us the Suzuki cult. I call the cars together Lembit Opik and the Cheeky Girls. Can definitely be a bit Suzuki heavy all together on the drive lol.

Spaceprincess · 07/06/2022 10:08

He's being very odd.
When I met my DP we both had small red Fiats with white stripes, we thought it was funny.

Mummyof287 · 07/06/2022 10:08

We have just bought a 2nd blue car (had blue and red before).I don't think we have had two cars the same colour before, and it did briefly cross my mind that they might look abit 'clashy' (different shades) but would never have not bought it because of that! I have now nicknamed us 'the blue crew' 😆💙

JemimaHumdrum · 07/06/2022 10:09

We had two white cars at one point, as did the neighbours on either side. It looked dreadful on Google Earth 😁

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 07/06/2022 10:20

Glad you're going to buy the red car anyway OP. Your DP is being so strange!

I will say that I know 2 couples who have the exact same car but in different colours and I think that's weird tbh.

vitahelp · 07/06/2022 10:37

YABU to have any red cars, all black is the only way.
But seriously, I don't see the problem in having two cars of the same colour, we both have black cars and I quite like that they match and feel even happier when someone visits in a black car and parks on our drive.
At one stage we nearly ended up with identical cars, same spec and colour. Wouldn't really have cared.

balalake · 07/06/2022 10:44

I was told red cars are more likely to be stopped by the police. That was in the days when we had traffic police. Never heard of the swingers thing.

Red or not is not the issue, could you manage with one car?

Lunar27 · 07/06/2022 10:46

tulips27 · 06/06/2022 22:09

I obsess over a lot of meaningless rubbish but I can't ever imagine ever giving the fact that a couple had two cars of the same colour even a passing thought! It just wouldn't even register as a thought.

Perhaps not but while we're on the subject, do you mind changing your username please.

It's a problem for me that there are two people here with the number 27.
😉
