To let my son try a fizzy drink?

Wednesdayafternoon · 31/05/2022 20:31

We were just messing about having a laugh and he had a mouthful of my fizzy drink. He just wanted to try it and I thought why not. His reaction was hilarious and we had a laugh. He's 5 and a half for context. He's not going to be having it again until he's older obviously but all of a sudden I feel bad about ting him try it 🙈 He'll no doubt tell his dad he drinks Coke Zero now and I'll get a judgmental earful off him 😬😳

I'm aware this is a very minor matter, much worse things going on in the world etc
Just interested to know what others think!

My 4 year old has tried lemonade a few times - takes a tiny sip and then spits it out - she doesn't like the feeling! What's the harm???

bumpertobumper · 31/05/2022 20:33

I thought you were going to say he's six months or something.
At 5 he is totally old enough to have some fizzy drink

Rainallnight · 31/05/2022 20:34

He’s five and a half! It’s fine!

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 31/05/2022 20:35

Is his dad's reaction more of a worry for you than your son having had a sip of your drink? It was obviously an accident. Your son will be fine, although my eldest has a pretty extreme reaction to caffeine I have no problem with my kids having caffine free fizzy drinks sometimes

Hahaha thank you! I knew it was ok deep down 🙈😅

I wouldn’t have done that personally

SOMEONE CALL SOCIAL SERVICES QUICKLY

Vsirbdo · 31/05/2022 20:36

Umm maybe I shouldn’t admit to this but when my DD was 3 she would often have a sip of my lemonade and I didn’t worry about the odd sip

Lol. Ok then.

Floralnomad · 31/05/2022 20:36

I also thought you were going to say he was a baby , surely most 5 yo have had fizz of some sort .

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 31/05/2022 20:38

I gave DD a mouthful of fizzy water when she was about 3 / 4 she said it 'yuk, it stings!' and she still (at nearly 6) every time someone offers her a drink, asks if it's 'bubbly' with a worried look on her face. Both adorable and guilt inducing at the same time Blush

Maybebabyno2 · 31/05/2022 20:39

Well my 2 year old drank my mcdonalds diet coke that was on the table whilst I was doing the dishes the other day. Parenting fail to the max 🤣

ldontWanna · 31/05/2022 20:39

I let my DD try it when she was even younger than 5, she hated it (which I kind of expected) and she won't touch the stuff even now that she is 10.

ShirleyPhallus · 31/05/2022 20:39

Oh my god, sorry OP but that’s really inappropriate parenting. My kids didn’t have any hint of a fizzy drink until they were 18, I figured if they were responsible enough to vote then they could probably handle a few bubbles by then too.

We also took a sensible approach to treats generally, they were allowed to sniff birthday cakes only (but not for too long, each could have 2-3 inhales) until they were 12. Treats were strictly limited to carrot sticks and sliced cucumber. Raisins off limits - you may as well give them sugar syrup through a drip. The result now is that they never ask for sugar and just love cubed tomatoes for a treat.

Careful who you tell this to in case SS visit you and make sure you’ve learnt your lesson.

DD(3) has had fizzy water more than once and occasionally has it with some squash in, horror of horrors (squash is a gateway drug on MN). She also nicked some of DH's diet coke once when he left it unattended. And she appeared holding a (thankfully unopened) can of cider once too asking to have some!

KyaClark · 31/05/2022 20:40

Jesus fucking Christ.

girlmom21 · 31/05/2022 20:40

To be fair Coke Zero is essentially child cruelty. Surely you should go full fat - like with milk?

5 is fine for the occasional fizzy drink. He didn’t even have that, just a sip of yours. It’s totally fine.

adhdforme · 31/05/2022 20:43

Why. Just why. What a stupid pointless post. 🤦‍♀️

I've heard about having to do the dishes at a restaurant if you can't pay, but McDonald's??
