I have a soon to be 4 yr old son who says his favourite colours are pink and purple and he always makes a beeline for rainbows, sprinkles and unicorns.

He wants his next shoes to be rainbow, pink shoes, he says.

I would LOVE to get him the bling-est most special sparkly shoes I can find. But will he be picked on? Will people judge us?

Not starting school this Sept in case that changes things.

Would love to hear if you'd buy very girlie shoes for a young boy?

Look for bright rainbow coloured rather than sparkly, same with clothes- far more options today than 20 years ago thankfully. Also be aware that the shape of the typical male child foot isn't quite the same as female children, we an issue than one of my DD's had feet which were more "boy" shaped so girl shoes didn't fit her, shoe shop explained, to do with the depth of the foot, not sure what age they diverge but DD's school shoes were an issue, the girls ones rubbed

I would buy him the sparkly shoes.

important caveat, I can easily afford to buy a second pair of shoes if he changes his mind or gives in to peer pressure and wants to conform. I might even buy the second pair even if I expect they will just end up donated without ever being worn.

It’s easy to argue for letting our kids experiment if we don’t have to lock them into those experiments. Families who can only buy one pair of shoes or one jacket don’t have the same luxury.

If he's confident enough not to care about possible teasing then yes. If it will cause him confidence problems then no. Depends on his personality imo.

Yeah my 3 yr old boy regularly wears his sister's light up glittery sparkly unicorny shoes. And trousers. His nails are also currently painted purple.
I understand worrying about people picking on him but guarantee at some point in everyone's lives they'll get picked on. That's life. May as well be for some shoes he loves.
