I can’t leave the house in the morning until…

I’ve made the beds and opened the curtains, it just doesn’t feel right to leave them, also I can’t go anywhere until I’ve had a cup of tea, I could be running late for work and I’d still need a cuppa while rushing round! Partner doesn’t quite understand why but I think it’s pretty normal stuff

I'm with you on the cup of tea! Have to have one every morning,
I've had to lower my expectation to have all beds made and curtains open though I leave before my kids are dressed and have only just got up...I do remind them every day please open curtains and make your bed but it falls on deaf ears!

BiasedBinding · 29/05/2022 07:39

I do those things routinely but I can leave the house if they aren’t done. I wait until I get to work before I have my coffee - much more peaceful

KangarooKenny · 29/05/2022 07:40

Yep, sounds normal to me. Except I put my tea in a travel cup and have it on the way.

MagicTurtle · 29/05/2022 07:41

Fair enough if you have time, but I find it a bit weird that you still need to do them all even if you're running late! I'm with your partner, OP.

Therealpink · 29/05/2022 07:42

Not normal if you do it to the point it makes you late. I’ve a preference for the kitchen being tidy before leaving, but being on time is much higher priority than tidying if it comes down to the wire.

Lex345 · 29/05/2022 07:44

I think everyone has a few morning rituals they cannot function properly without.

I prefer to leave everywhere completely tidy, pots washed and dried, beds made, curtains open, living room tidy etc. I will leave most of these if needed though.

The morning coffee is not going anywhere though. I routinely get up earlier than everyone just so I can drink it in absolute peace!

Believeitornot · 29/05/2022 07:46

If I’m running late then I skip breakfast.

if you’re regularly late then up earlier 🤣

Heronwatcher · 29/05/2022 07:48

If it’s only yourself you’re making late then go for it. I don’t do this though, I can be out of the house in 5 mins if I have to be. And if we were already running late and my partner started making a cup of tea I’d think he’d gone mad!

FelicityFlops · 29/05/2022 07:50

Coffee, shower, do hair, clean teeth, dress, make bed.
Don't have any curtains, so that is easy, but in Winter I will raise any blinds that have been closed.
Often put the dishwasher on after finishing coffee or unload it whilst making coffee, depending on what I have been cooking.
I might also put a load of washing on, but as I am currently working from home I don't need to leave the house.
However, I have been known to be out doing shopping at 07:00 before my working day begins.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 29/05/2022 07:50

Oh I definitely make sure curtains and blinds are open but always prefer my coffee in the office where at least I get peace for 15 minutes Grin

Ragwort · 29/05/2022 07:54

I like a full hour and a half (preferably two!) before I leave for work .. Grin. I quite enjoy early mornings though (no young DC which helps!). Leisurely coffee or two, read the paper Mumsnet on line, potter around making sure the house is tidy, hang the washing out etc. I am working today, don't need to leave until 9am but was up at 7.30.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 07:57

Tea, breakfast, loo 😳, open curtains, duvets pulled back to air (not made), surfaces cleaned, wash on.

BiasedBinding · 29/05/2022 07:59

When my children are older I will definitely be getting up earlier for a coffee in peace, but at the moment it’s the cuddles in my bed first thing that keep my youngest sleeping until 6.30am so I will defer the coffee until work for now

Moithered · 29/05/2022 08:00

What is the AIBU here, this is just you stating your habits

SoggyPaper · 29/05/2022 08:04

I think my standards and expectations are much lower. As long as everyone is wearing clothing, we can leave the house. The toddler is not always on board with this stipulation though. 🤣

Obviously, I like to make sure we are all properly ready and the house isn’t in disarray. But my housework will get done when it gets done.

I don’t even need the cup of coffee either.

Benjispruce4 · 29/05/2022 08:04

@Mothered I guess it’s because her partner doesn’t understand so asking if being unreasonable.

DesignerRecliner · 29/05/2022 08:08

For me it's coffee, all washing up in the utility room/dishwasher and the kitchen tidy. Curtains open, windows on the latch and beds semi made. Then we get back to a fresh house that's tidy for the evening

Thebeastofsleep · 29/05/2022 08:11

Nope.

I have preferences, beds made, kitchen tidy, curtains open, washload on. But I can leave whenever I need to, being on time is more important to me.

toastedbagiel · 29/05/2022 08:17

I think the key thing here is you are verging on obsessive behaviour if you cannot leave the house without doing certain things.

Charlavail · 29/05/2022 08:18

Tea drunk
Beds made
Curtains open
Washing up done (not dried)
Nothing on the floors.

Fairislefandango · 29/05/2022 08:20

Cup of tea, definitely. Anything else can wait until later if I'm in a rush.

megletthesecond · 29/05/2022 08:20

Yanbu. Opening curtains isn't really hard though. I make sure my bed is tidy too. The house is usually a mess though.
I've never actually run late tbh so I always have breakfast. My blood pressure doesnt wake up until I've eaten.

Sidisawetlettuce · 29/05/2022 08:22

I never make my bed straight away. I pull the duvet back so the bed can air.

KangarooKenny · 29/05/2022 08:27

Turning the duvet back and fluffing up the pillows is making the bed for me.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/05/2022 08:34

Cup of coffee. Definitely. i would struggle to leave the house without one. I’d make it and then take 15 minutes getting ready and drinking it as soon as cool enough.

if I really had to get out of the house urgently, I’d make a coffee and take it with me in a transportable cup.
