to bring dog in supermarket

I have name changed as I know that most people will be inclined to think that this is ridiculous proposition as its societally unacceptable. I know the cognizant is not to bring them in because they could get out and get into things and cause damage or irritate people with allergens or for hygiene reasons etc etc but surely this applies to dogs who are on leads and being held and not ones in enclosed baby-looking prams that cant get out or get close enough to people to irritate them. I honestly don't see the issue with well behaved dogs who cant bother anyone especially when no one will even know they are there. I saw someone in the supermarket who'd done this a while ago, they bothered no one and ever since I've been thinking that this is something id like to do as I have a hidden disability that is made just that bit more comfortable with my dog just being there but I haven't done it as I'm too ashamed and would be anxious the whole time about being found out! I dont want any "YABU for getting her a pram", its a separate issue, she requires one and I'm not getting into a debate about it. AIBU to go for it or should I leave it well alone and forget about it?

No just no there is no need for it and if I need a reason my child (who does have additional needs) is scared of many dogs assistance dogs are "ok" they are doing a job and they don't approach him or even sniff in his direction he has still been known to leg it or start squealing and flapping this is not ideal for anyone

Applegreenb · 28/05/2022 06:36

I would hate this not going to lie. There will be some dog owners that think they are entitled to take their dog in the shop if this became a thing and ruin it for all good dog owners.

Not to mention I do love dogs and I’m allergic so having them in all places wouldn’t be great for me. Plus my toddler had a “it’s alright he’s friendly” dog coming running at them and lick their face so now they are terrified of dogs.

sandgrown · 28/05/2022 06:44

Absolutely no. I was behind a couple with a dog in a normal child’s pram last week . She then said “ oh he needs a cuddle “ ( No he didn’t He was quiet) she picked him out of the pram and held him at the checkout . He was a spaniel sized dog. She seemed offended I didn’t engage with him. I love dogs and I have one but they belong on the floor and out of shops unless they are trained official assistance dogs. I am sorry you have anxiety but you could have a home delivery.

Redouble · 28/05/2022 06:52

@sandgrown I'm sure people do this sort of thing for attention.

I just don't buy the 'emotional support' angle, I think it really is attention seeking.

There's a guy who always tries to bring in his dog to the supermarket I work - the one time he slipped in without us seeing, the dog pissed on the floor and we had to waste off ££ worth of food product he had spoiled. And it was only a 'little' dog who the owner said was an 'angel'.

I think it's cruel to bring in a pet to a supermarket. Bright lights, millions of smells, lots of people, lots of noise/loud kids/tills beeping - it must be very overwhelming if that dog hasn't been properly guidance dog trained.

Plantlifeandsoul · 28/05/2022 06:54

My mum has a severe allergy to fur. If we start allowing pets everywhere she will really struggle. I guess it’s a matter of whose needs trump whose? If you can’t see and need a guide dog then clearly your needs trump an allergy sufferer. But in your case would your need for your dog trump my mums need to avoid an allergic reaction (puffy, steaming eyes, constant sneezing, painful sinuses etc)? I’m not asking you to decide but just highlighting a difficulty.

Plantlifeandsoul · 28/05/2022 06:55
  • streaming eyes!!! Steaming eyes would trump everything 😊
Sally090807 · 28/05/2022 07:00

Where do you draw the line, in the paper yesterday there was an article about a man suing a supermarket because they told him not to bring in his “assistance cat”. Where do you draw the line, cats, dogs, rats, snakes, small pony etc.
People are so self entitled nowadays.
I have a dog but think from a hygiene point of view that no animal should be in a food shop. I don’t agree with them in cafes or restaurants either.

SpindleSheWrote · 28/05/2022 07:01

I was worried about the welfare of the Sainsburys cat too.

One of my thoughts was, what if a dog goes for it?

BornBlonde · 28/05/2022 07:02

I've yet to see a dog in a pram but that seems ridiculous!

Badqueen · 28/05/2022 07:06

Dpgs don't belong in prams or supermarkets.

Jeansgoals · 28/05/2022 07:06

Fucking dogs, fucking everywhere. Can't stand them.

Badqueen · 28/05/2022 07:06

.. Unless a genuine assistant dog, but then it wouldn't be in a pram. What's with the pram thing?

GrumpyPanda · 28/05/2022 07:07

Doggyfish · 28/05/2022 00:48

It's either a support dog or it isn't, if it is then get it one of those harnesses that says 'support dog' type thing on it and tear on.

Suuuure. Next step, emotional support peacocks - remember this one? www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42880690.amp

CeeceeBloomingdale · 28/05/2022 07:10

YABU. It's not a service dog which performs a task presumably as it couldn't actually perform a task for you in the pram. Emotional support animals aren't a thing legally. As it's in a pram and providing no service to you I don't see the benefit. You'll be stressing about being thrown out and likely causing other shoppers and staff anxiety too as lots of people don't like dogs or are allergic.

Largebutnotincharge · 28/05/2022 07:11

TooManyPJs · 28/05/2022 01:46

No dogs should not be allowed in supermarkets. The odd well-trained guide dog, of course. They gave tons of training and numbers are very low - I've literally never seen a guide dog in a supermarket.

If it were free rein there would be all sorts with their untrained and badly controlled dogs in there. It's bad enough when you go for a walk and people don't control their dogs. I don't want to be dealing with that when trying to do a food shop.

I agree with this! The streets, parks and even outside of shops are full of dogs with some of them being untrained and a pain in the arse. Imagine if everyone took their pet dog in to do the weekly shop! It's not somthing that would work out well. Guide dogs, medical assistance dogs yes because there aren't enough of them to cause an issue and as above, they're well trained.

chantico · 28/05/2022 07:12

Registered and accredited assistance dogs only in supermarkets.

No other animals.

It's not going to help your anxiety to be dealing with the inevitable comments and (possibly veiled) hostility.

You would be better turning your energies to exploring other coping strategies. Or switching to online delivery for your supermarket shopping, and visiting in person only smaller suppliers (who can be more flexible about allowing in any dog)

AgentProvocateur · 28/05/2022 07:12

“Emotional support animal” Hmm

Maybebabyno2 · 28/05/2022 07:12

How will you push the pram and the trolley at the same time?

MissMaple82 · 28/05/2022 07:14

Marblessolveeverything · 28/05/2022 00:25

Well that's great another place my child can't go due to severe allergies. Strange how dogs come before childrens lives .. leave the dog outside!

Unlikely to impact. People walk into supermarkets all the time who have dog hair and dander on them. Stop being so dramatic

wetotter · 28/05/2022 07:16

BornBlonde · 28/05/2022 07:02

I've yet to see a dog in a pram but that seems ridiculous!

They're very useful for elderly dogs or those recovering from an injury. Or two dog households where the dogs have very disparate exercise needs.

Because they might not manage a long walk, but still benefit from being let down once at a green area. And it helps avoid long times home alone

BakedTattie · 28/05/2022 07:16

I love dogs.

but for the love of fuck they are bloody everywhere now. No I don’t want to see your dog in a weird dog pram (what the actual fuck) while I shop for food.

keep the dog out the supermarket and get an online delivery.

Some dog owners have gone totally (barking) mad. They’ll be claiming dogs have rights soon!

MissMaple82 · 28/05/2022 07:18

DustyTulips · 28/05/2022 06:33

It would mean I sneezed and wheezed my way around the shop, unless I happened to have taken an antihistamine that day for other reasons. Not life threatening no, but unpleasant for me. And yes, just having a dog near me is enough to cause me problems - I’ve moved carriage on trains before now and lost my booked seat, as that was less bad than sneezing continuously and wheezing for the whole journey.

Maybe you should take anti histamines daily. Your ailment is your responsibility not others

Miffee · 28/05/2022 07:20

I have no issue with it but for the allergy thing. I have never known anybody severely allergic to anything so I wouldn't like to comment but if it would genuinely put someone's life at risk then it's a YABU from me.

Hygiene seems like a bullshit reason to object. People are gross af and they are mauling with all the goods in the supermarket from the supply chain to customers.

LakieLady · 28/05/2022 07:24

There used to be a guy near me who had a hawk of some sort. He used to go out with the hawk and his spaniel, and hunt rabbits (the dog would flush them out, and the hawk would catch them).

I saw his dog tied up outside Tesco one day, and when I went in, the owner was in the shop with his hawk on his shoulder.

A few people stared, but he was pretty well-known locally and most people didn't seem to think anything of it. The bird was incredibly calm though, I'm bird-phobic and it barely bothered me at all.

Stevienickssnickers · 28/05/2022 07:25

Every one on MN has a really well behaved dog. I've been outside, I'd argue that many dogs are not well behaved in the slightest.

I miss the old days when people had dogs but didn't feel the need to take them absolutely everywhere.
