To think they are planning to axe the wrong BBC channels...

Isn't BBC 4 what a public broadcaster should be doing? Not BBC 3 for example...

I suppose they could at least put the good stuff that would have gone on BBC 4 on BBC 2 as they would have fitted back in past...

Are they getting rid of BBC 4?

Well they can fuck off expecting a bloody licence fee then.

poetryandwine · 26/05/2022 21:57

I am devastated.

WakeWaterWalk · 26/05/2022 22:00

Yanbu.

TunnelOfGoats · 26/05/2022 22:00

Yanbu OP! Dreadful decision.

ofwarren · 26/05/2022 22:01

Totally agree. BBC4 is a million times better than BBC3. 3 is utter shite.

pastabest · 26/05/2022 22:02

its to provoke a reaction

KarrotKake · 26/05/2022 22:05

I'd settle for a watchable BBC1. We haven't had a consistent signal since last summer when there was a fire at out local mast. All BBC channels have been temperamental, along with 5*.

jobhunter7 · 26/05/2022 22:05

@pastabest possibly - didn't they threaten to axe 6music a while ago?

Baffling. The BBC4 repeats of Top of the Pops on Friday nights are always the number one trending topic on Twitter.

Us oldies watch telly, the young ones watch programmes on phones and tablets - yet they keep BBC3 on TV and move BBC4 online.

Twats.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 26/05/2022 22:11

I love BBC4!

jobhunter7 · 26/05/2022 22:15

CBBC also for the chop - I suppose they could just make BBC 1 or 2 CBBC between 3.30-6pm like they used to..

The brought bbc 3 back off just being online to try and attract a younger audience. Because once we all snuff it they are up shit creek.

Well, they have just moved BBC3 back onto television: it had been online-only for a few years.

I initially get annoyed about announcements like this because it seems to me the one BBC channel that could easily be got rid of is BBC1, which doesn't do anything different from ITV. Then I remember that I literally never watch live television anyway, and it doesn't make any difference to me whether they're broadcast through an aerial or the internet: I only watch stuff on the iPlayer.

I'm upset at anything being done to restrict access to CBBC, though. Having a children's channel with no adverts is so important.

mogtheexcellent · 26/05/2022 22:18

I think they should move bbc3 back online. It was a rubbish move bringing it back. A large portion of people watching bbc4 are older and unlikely to be able to watch online.

Certainly my parents wont. They still highlight the programmes they want to watch on radio times Sad

Featuredcreature · 26/05/2022 22:19

I thought they had already decided that BBC 4 was going to be an archive channel anyway, or did I imagine that?

Couldn't agree more! We love the old TOTP.

yoshiblue · 26/05/2022 22:23

They are axing BBC 4 and CBBC live channels but will be available through iPlayer. I never watch shows live anyway, always pick what I want on iPlayer

Punkypinky · 26/05/2022 22:23

I will miss CBeebies/ CBBC my daughter tends to binge watch one thing on iPlayer or Netflix eg just loads of peppa pig in a row. Being able to flick CBeebies on meant she was watching a variety over half an hour or so without me having to be involved.

megletthesecond · 26/05/2022 22:24

Bbc4 and cbbc are favourites in this house. They can't move them on-line. What a way to ruin them.

<<off to look for petitions>>

bellac11 · 26/05/2022 22:27

I virtually only watch bbc4 and talking pictures, and a bit of sky arts

Toddlerteaplease · 26/05/2022 22:51

Noooo, I love BBC4

PortiaFimbriata · 26/05/2022 23:20

Scheduled live BBC4 has real value in a "what's on TV tonight? Bugger all - let's watch a documentary about the making of Citizen Kane/an old Top of the Pops/Brian Cox standing on a mountain" sort of way. BBC3 is much more streaming friendly.

And surely the BBC4 demographic are more likely to want to watch live TV?

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 26/05/2022 23:23

So basically you’re saying they should get rid of the channel you or other middle aged MNs like and get rid of the channels a different set of people who also pay the license fee like??

I don’t like Radio 2 and love 6 Music. Should they axe Radio 2 just because I don’t like it?

it doesn’t work like that.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 26/05/2022 23:25

We shouldn’t be allowing the Tories to destroy the gem which is the BBC even if I cannot stand BBC News and refuse to watch BBC Breakfast. Anyone who’s spent 5 minutes in Italy, Spain or America will be able to tell you why we should not let them do this.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 26/05/2022 23:26

@PortiaFimbriata agree with that. The content works brilliantly for dipping in and out of scheduled broadcasts, not for searching up.
