Modern Milkman is awful

My fiance and I were walking home from the shop when a salesman showed up at my door before we got in, talking about the app. Since we live in middlesbrough, and it was dark, we felt a bit obliged to listen to the hooded man at our door.

We signed up and it was probably the worst decision we made this year.

We ordered 3 bottles of milk twice a week. On saturdays and tuesdays. The first few weeks went really well. On time and consistent.

Almost a month in, I was woken up by one of the delivery men shouting: "I dont care! I f*cking dont care", this was around 5am, mind you. I saw the recording on my amazon blink camera.

After this incident, i noticed my milk was not complete. I would either get 2, 1 or even nothing. This frustrated us as we're paying £3 per delivery for this and they cant even deliver.

My fiance has tried so hard to cancel. It's IMPOSSIBLE to cancel. No phoneline, barely any help on the app. My fiance found a way and they stated they would contact but still haven't even bothered!
They are still taking money from his account but are not delivering anything to the door. I'm disgusted with this service and will not be recommending this to ANYONE.

Tldr: don't buy from these guys, they'll take your money and not deliver anything, impossible to cancel.

I've had similar from Milk & More- weeks of milk not being delivered but marked as delivered on the system, then weeks of trying to get it sorted out (apparently if the milkman marks that it has been delivered then that is a fact and there's no possible way he could be mistaken or lying 🙄) I've gone back to Ocado now, which is a shame as the reason I tried delivery was the glass bottles.

PipeScatter · 25/05/2022 09:17

I've not heard of this company but on the basis of our neighbour's milkman, I can safely say they're not the same as the nostalgic memories I have of them!

Our neighbour's drives a regular diesel van and obviously either has too many deliveries or is just keen to get them done as quickly as possible, based on the speed he drives on to our shared driveway at 2am. Music playing (not really loudly, but loudly enough at 2am when you've got a bedroom window open), jumps out, thumps his drivers door, crashes about putting the milk on the doorstep, thumps his drivers door as he gets back in then reverses off at full speed again. First time he did it I thought someone's car was being stolen!

Milk & More are no better, they drop off less milk and spend weeks emailing to get refunds. We're back to buying from the shop, much easier.

MRex · 25/05/2022 09:21

Thanks for the reminder to chase them yet again for our final refund that they haven't bothered to put through yet!

Genuine question - are there not independent milkmen where people are using these companies. Why would you not support a local business if you were signing up to such a service? We have a local man and there are several to choose from.

None in my area

Mountainpika · 25/05/2022 09:44

We've used Milk and more for years. Only failed to deliver twice in that time - and that was because of heavy snow and ice. Easy to order, easy to pause deliveries or order extras. Always there well before breakfast.

Headabovetheparakeet · 25/05/2022 09:51

What does this have to do with living in Middlesbrough?

Are you suggesting you felt too threatened to not fill out a direct debit form on your doorstep?

darisdet · 25/05/2022 09:56

I had the hard sell on the doorstep recently for one of the milk delivery franchises. They were quite persistent, the second time they'd been back in weeks. Politely told them I wasn't interested.

I like the idea of buying local, and do, but it wasn't a case of that.

Hugasauras · 25/05/2022 09:56

We use a local dairy and they are excellent. They were inundated with requests when lockdown began and they've expanded hugely, but they've never missed or got a delivery wrong. They're starting to deliver local strawberries from this Friday too 😋

I actually think milkmen have seen a bit of a resurgence, far from being a dying breed.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 25/05/2022 09:59

We cancelled our milkman due to reliability issues. Some missing deliveries, sometimes not delivered by the time H was up for work. The main driver for me had been reusable glass bottles, but ours ended up being delivered in the same kind of plastic cartons the supermarket sells. So zero gains for a big cost increase.

IsabelHerna · 25/05/2022 10:56

oh no and in theory it's nice, but I agree the execution is really bad

Wafflesnsniffles · 25/05/2022 10:59

Modern Milkman is owned by one of Boris's pals. We have a locally owned independent milkman but that hasnt stopped MM targeting every household in this town repeatedly.

Mol1628 · 25/05/2022 11:02

We had milk and more. It was fine at first lovely milkman came about 6am if we didn’t get what we’d ordered we’d get a refund issued and a sorry note saying they’d run out.

He retired and we got a new one. He used to deliver at about 12am so in summer by the time we got up the milk was warm. Items added before the order cut off were never actually sent to us and it took ages to chase a refund.

I did like getting the glass bottles but really it was just too expensive. I think they’ve stopped delivering here now actually.

Rosehugger · 25/05/2022 11:03

Leave a note taped to the door - no more milk please.

Someone approached me on the doorstep and I signed up but then emailed to change my mind. The service wasn't great last time, it's far more expensive than supermarket milk, and we tend to buy filtered milk anyway as our milk consumption is so erratic than regular milk often goes off before we use it.

darksquidge14 · 25/05/2022 12:05

Good for you.

a neighbour gets milk from a one-man band, and is ok.
he accepts cheques which she likes, and offered to fetch her anything from local shop.
he does not have a website, too busy delivering and taking payments in cash/cheque.
north london area.

He's delivering "Milk" you say?...😂

We had a lad here yesterday, felt sorry for him as he was young and wearing just a thin hoody and the rain was blowing sideways. I admit I like the idea, would be great to get the fruit, veg and bakery goods they offer delivered, but round here they come about 2am and that would result in the dog going bonkers and thoroughly pissing off the rest of the street so I declines.

monkeysox · 25/05/2022 13:15

@WhiskeyMakesMeFrisky she's saying some of Boro is rough.

reallypuzzledoverthis · 25/05/2022 13:19

On a lighter note in the theme of the milkman who came to a screeching halt, back in my youth I knew a lad who got prosecuted for a high speed police chase in a stolen milk float! It was even televised on one of those crimes on
camera programmes! 😂

I knew a girl who was run over by a milk float. Ended up with a broken leg. We teased her mercilessly over it for years (she did see the funny side of it), I always understood why she didn't hear the electric float but could never work out why the rattling bottles didn't give it away.

alsonotmyname · 25/05/2022 16:25

I really like them, easy to change order or skip a delivery on the app and the milk tastes great.

backgroundingo · 25/05/2022 18:50

We had a bad experience with milk and more. Forgetting deliveries, very rude notes left, noisy 4am deliveries that get hot in the summer and despite being able to use the app to change it they take no notice. It's so much more expensive than tesco so the experience has to be good. It wasn't so we cancelled after about 4 months.

Boiledbeetle · 25/05/2022 18:55

I've got to say as someone who had the misfortune to do a milk round back in the day of the electric milk floats. The current iteration of milkmen is very poor!

The front of the order books used to say "the customer is the purpose of your work. Not an interruption of it. Not something the current companies pay much heed to!

letsnotdothat · 26/05/2022 07:16

They’re useless, we cancelled them a while ago. They kept delivering milk that was about to go off so we had 1 or 2 days to finish 6 bottles. They also stopped collecting the empties so we had a humongous backlog. I contacted them to let them know and they said they’d tell the driver but he still never took them so I just put them in the recycling in the end and cancelled the orders. It isn’t the same as when I was a kid anyway, it’s just a guy in a transit van.

Isn't the point of a milkman that you get it delivered fresh each morning? Confused
Why were you stocking up?

CatherineCawood · 26/05/2022 09:03

@Johnnysgirl they deliver 2 or 3 times a week only, not daily, so you do have to stock up if you don't want to go to the shops as well.
