My Dad, born in the 1920s loved it, possibly his favourite film. Strange because men dressing up as women was about as far away from his lifestyle as you could get.

My favourite film - funny, quirky, stylish and very tolerant. I think I might have watched it 20 times!

Josette77 · 24/05/2022 01:58

On average she weighed 118lbs and was 5'6.
A size two mannequin didn't fit her dress because of the waist.

Some Like It Hot is one of my absolute favourites, also How to Marry a Millionaire, she’s so funny! My best long haul flight ever had these two films on offer - heaven!!

FatherBuzzCagney · 24/05/2022 02:24

One of my absolute favourite films. Billy Wilder was a genius. Everyone in it was at the top of their game.

Jerry: Now you've done it! Now you have done it!
Joe: Done what?
Jerry: You tore off one of my chests!

I have seen it in colour... it was shown as such on tv once

Absolutely love that film

We all had brunch at that hotel when the kids were younger

I’ve been there too - we had a drink in a bar overlooking the beach! We wandered into the lobby to take a photo of the famous lift Grin Absolute magic!

“And bring your YACHT!”

Yes I read that they looked so ridiculously masculine and would obviously never pass as women, so they had to put loads of make up on them and then shot it in black and white

@lesgalettes Oh that’s interesting, I always assumed it was part of the farce element of the film that they didn’t ‘pass’ in the slightest, yet everyone they met thought they were genuinely female 😄

I didnt know he was supposed to be impersonating Cary Grant.

Hoo tawks lyke that?

Maireas · 24/05/2022 18:15

It's a great film. Jack Lemmon is so funny. I just feel so sorry for Marilyn, she was having such a tough time and so wanted the baby.

Maireas · 24/05/2022 18:17

I think she's great in Bus Stop as well. I don't know why that film isn't shown more.

Schmz · 24/05/2022 18:24

Amazing film !!!!

GoFishandChips · 24/05/2022 18:29

"I'm through with love" is her best song I think, it's sung with such emotion! Do love How to Marry a Millionaire as well.

GrumpyTerrier · 24/05/2022 19:15

She did work out, with weights which wasn't common for women at the time. And she had both a nose job and a chin implant for a slightly receding chin. Not much different from celebs these days!

Yep. I always remember the picture of her with a barbell.

Finding it a bit depressing that in a thread about such a great film, which has one of the sharpest scripts ever written and three properly brilliant lead performances, so many posters are focused on what size Marilyn was.

Nolongerteaching · 25/05/2022 06:30

Not focused, just an observation for most, I think.

CulturePigeon · 25/05/2022 09:37

Agree with PPs - a wonderful film. I think Tony Curtis was doing a 'Cary Grant' impression, which added to the fun at the time it was made but might be lost on modern audiences.

I once worked with a young man who refused to watch any black and white films on principle. He thought they would be intrinsically bad, because they were 'old'. What a narrow-minded plonker - he was missing many, many treats.

(Woody Allen made 'Broadway Danny Rose' in black and white and that is also a hilarious film.)

YANBU. A remake? God forbid, what a terrible thought😱
