AIBU to not want fizzy drinks at my kids party

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 11:09

So to be clear I'd bought the diet, caffeine free varieties, plus other homemade fizzy stuff just so they're not missing out (yes I know about the sweetners but it's a one-off). So when a parent turns up with 40 cans of sugar loaded drinks and they all run to grab them before I've even noticed or had a chance to offer anything else... its very annoying! Cue spirited, cheeky kids turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches galore... not an exaggeration.

I prefer then to drink the surgery ones than the additive laden diet drinks tbh.

It's just a party. Move on

Prettypussy · 23/05/2022 16:46

Sugar does not cause tantrums, tummy aches or destructive behaviour- that's lack of discipline on parents behalf and just an excuse.

Funny how we managed to drink fizzy drinks in the 70s and 80s without becoming nightmare children isn't it?

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 23/05/2022 16:47

Turns out it wasn't a party.
Turns out fizzy drinks don't make your kids hyper.
Turns out affluent Kentish apple drinks have as much sugar in them as coke.
Turns out the destruction of the front door and flooding was all to do with the little brats behaviour and nothing to do with the drink making them like that.
Well you live and learn.

You are absolutely right. I think I was being too nice blaming it on the caffeine as I had lots of regular coke growing up and I was always happy hyper. I admit I was a bit miffed mopping up, and fixing the jammed door while mummy sat and chatted, and even more miffed picking up all the rocks they had been throwing and then finding all the cans around the garden. I already know who won't be invited back.

So the parents stayed?

The Guardian has a pretty good lay review of the myth around the Sugar Rush

And here's a peer reviewed meta analysis:

Thanks!

Yes - didn't think the original post warranted much detail. Surprised by how many people replied tbh or were so shocked I hadn't supplied the caffeinated stuff to the lit'ns. Thought the Point of AIBU was to ask random stuff?? Anyway, I have learnt a lesson and shall remember to have my supplies better thought out in future.😊

Hm. I don't understand how sugar doesn't confer energy. If I'm low, tired, shaky, with low blood sugar, I need to eat something to bring my glucose levels back up.

The meta analysis was about mood. Which I'm not discussing, I'm talking specifically about energy.

'Sugar, by virtue of its easy digestibility and high glucose content, is a quick source of energy for your cells'

So if the 10 kids attended

and their parents stayed

that is what…. 25 people? Presuming a few didn’t stay.

So makes the 40 cans he bought likely not to have been brought just for the kids but for all attendees Surely

This is one of those threads where the op proper exaggerates then instead of just owning it, doubles down on it throwing more and more mad detail in to try to sway the answers.

Yes. Very clear this story hasn’t gone the way the Op envisioned so she tried to claw it back in her favour but ended up just digging herself further and further in to a hole!

Intrigueddotcom · 23/05/2022 17:18

It’s a party
its not a party it’s a play date
Supplies fizzy drinks
horrified that father bring 40 cans of fizzy drinks just for the kids
turns out parents also stayed so can we’re like for a few dozen

Not really. I've said several times that I've been wrong...

No, people assumed it was a birthday party. Just like people are assuming we had 25 guests. There were 3 parents who stayed. Not sure why any of this matters tbh.

Fizzy isn’t a thing at kids parties. Jugs of squash, yes, but no fizzy drinks.
DS can’t be the only one who vomits after fizzy.
Also won’t someone think about the teeth!🤦‍♀️

@Bickles

It is unusual for someone to vomit after a fizzy drink. Really unusual.

Blarting · 23/05/2022 17:32

@Anorthernlass I think you'll find it's the bit about all the children were having tantrums and tummy aches.

A lot of poetic license was used there!

That part just didn't happen.

Wrong in the title of the post, perhaps. Saying you didn't want fizzy drinks, when you yourself provided some.

YOU said “party”

then YOU changed to “play date”

on one else made that change. But you

Intrigueddotcom · 23/05/2022 17:35

I asked “did the parents stay”

you said “yes”

now only 3 stayed

starting OPs is perhaps something you need to give some thought to op

Definitely didn't say all... have no idea where this came from.

South east affluent commuter town here

Years and years of going to other childrens’ parties

Never ever has there EVER been any fizzy drinks. Ever. And sure as heck not at my children’s

It is not even seen as a “treat”.

Very pricey part of North London, every party my son has been to has had fizzy drink available. Fairly certain the children of affluent commuter towns don’t have different DNA.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/05/2022 17:44

Ok you intimated it was all of them with your "galore" wording, so how many of the 10 was it at the party play date?

I'm guessing galore means a high percentage, not just one or two?

Ah yes I see I called them "sugar loaded".
