AIBU to not want fizzy drinks at my kids party

So to be clear I'd bought the diet, caffeine free varieties, plus other homemade fizzy stuff just so they're not missing out (yes I know about the sweetners but it's a one-off). So when a parent turns up with 40 cans of sugar loaded drinks and they all run to grab them before I've even noticed or had a chance to offer anything else... its very annoying! Cue spirited, cheeky kids turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches galore... not an exaggeration.

What a car crash thread!

It's a bit of sugar fgs ...unclench!

It was coke, I think OP confused it with cocaine?

Ok you intimated it was all of them with your "galore" wording, so how many of the 10 was it at the party play date?

I'm guessing galore means a high percentage, not just one or two?

Well absolutely not every kid had all 3 of those 😎 . I will definitely put more thought into my descriptions. I hadn't expected so much interest or so many replies tbh.

Well why did you post them? You mean you didn't think you'd get so many posts say YABU?

There are more holes in this thread, than a Swiss cheese.

Oops I seem to be in the wrong here so it's been an eye opener!! I bought one diet caffeine free bottle so they would at least have a few sips, plus fizzy water I mix with squash. The kids are 10. Btw it wasn't a birthday party - it was just a random excuse for a party. I didn't know the sugar rush thing had been disproven.

Wow, what a fun event this sounds 😂

So in conclusion:

AIBU for not wanting someone to provide fizzy drinks - yes (oops even forgot to specifically mention the "sugar laden" drink was coke)
AIBU for being too vague in my title - yes
AIBU for not realising inviting 10 kids to my house for no specific reason is not normal - yes
AIBU for not being specific that 3 adults also stayed - yes
AIBU for thinking bad behaviour may have been caused by the drink - yes
AIBU for not being specific enough that not every single kid had all three of tantrum, tummyache and damaging property - yes

Phew. I'm so, so, so very sorry. I shall try harder next time.

@Anorthernlass you've forgotten IABU, to be angry posted because I've been called out?

I got massively hyper on coke when I was a kid and my mum.purposely bought it for me because I was "so funny." Maybe the recipe changed.
Anyway since others are so interested... no I'm not an elderflower only person and the kids already knew and were excited about what we had planned. We like sugar a lot, caffeine not so much.
Today I will fix the front door and the flooded floor and pick up all the rocks. Of course I was talking about little rascal vandalism - not graffiti or anything like that.
There were other parents present while I was looking after half the kids. I will inform them that they are also not being reasonable 😂about their kids being up so late

They flooded your house, damaged a door and were throwing rocks? Seriously I don't know why you are focusing on drinks. The children sound horrific, I've brought up 4 and have 6 GC and I've never known kids behave like that. Did your children join in with this? I'd be seriously furious with that behaviour and I wouldn't be worrying if they'd had a fun time.

In a nutshell

you hugely embellished the reality and then was surprised at the comments guessing you had done just that.

and instead of just posting a clarifying post of the much less dramatic post, you got yourself in a right old middle.

bit like a story my just turned 8 year old told me tonight

LOL @CupidStunt22 Grin

My kids have never drunk pop, or anything with high fructose corn syrup. We're not big juice drinkers either TBF. I'm very sensitive to caffeine even a coke stops me sleeping, there's no way I'd be giving caffeinated drinks to my kids, but you guys crack on.

cavalier · 24/05/2022 18:23

YANBU … I think fizzy drinks are ok in very small doses but not free flowing at a party for children .. full of rubbish and makes them moody as it does me

GingerWit · 24/05/2022 18:44

The full sugar would have also been a one off and much better than the chemical filled stuff. You can't dictate what other people's children drink. You sound very aggressive, judgy, and hateful of other children. Children don't need sugar to be loud, they will act their ages at all times. It doesn't matter if there was sugar in the drinks or not, it's the gas which causes the bloating and tummy ache, along with running around and becoming hot after eating.

God's...I wish my life was as simple as worrying about kids drinking pop at a party.

Flossatops · 24/05/2022 18:56

It's all getting very intense on here over a few fizzy drinks. MN increasingly not for the faint-hearted :)

CowboyFromHell · 24/05/2022 19:10

Mumsnet is such a weird alternative reality sometimes. From skim reading this thread 90% of posters believe fizzy drinks, including ‘diet’ ones, are so unhealthy that a small glass of Coke twice a year should be anyone’s uppermost limit. and that NO ONE has fizzy drinks in their houses, or on a daily basis.

In reality supermarkets have aisles full of fizzy drinks, people order them in cafes and restaurants and a lot of people drink them in huge quantities as mixers on nights out.

It’s almost as though mumsnet is chock full of complete bullshitters…

Simonjt · 24/05/2022 19:11

Can someone provide me with the ingredients of one of these magical fizzy sugar versions that aren’t “laden with nasty chemicals”.

DressingGownofDoom · 24/05/2022 19:20

Ten year olds shouldn't be having tantrums and destroying property even after a can of Coke. I thought they were about 5. The standard here is fruit shoots or miwadi, I do allow fizzy drinks but wouldn't give them to other peoples children.

Mediocrates · 24/05/2022 19:24

I presumed from the OP’s first couple of posts that these kids must be about four or five years old, with “a couple of sips each” of diet, caffeine free fizzy drinks considered some sort of treat.

They’re ten?! Jesus, it’s not crystal meth. They’ll live.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/05/2022 19:37

turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches

That sounds like me but my 'fizzy drink' is Prosecco - and substitute 'tummyaches' with head aches. 😊

Vynalbob · 24/05/2022 19:42

Sticks my neck out....
I don't believe in a sugar rush, it either learnt behaviour as an excuse for getting away with a little more
or
A child's natural diet leaves them without energy and they get a temporary top up to their usual state.

This was the favourite fizzy drink with my kids when they were kids, think they drink stronger things now.

Fizzy drinks aren't good for children full stop.

But also the sugar making children hyper is an absolute myth

Inwiththenew · 24/05/2022 19:54

Fizzy drinks are poison. YANU. Chemicals, sweeteners, sugar ….you may as well let your kids smoke cigarettes. I wish people would realise that just because you can buy it in the shops doesn’t mean it’s safe.
