AIBU to not want fizzy drinks at my kids party

So to be clear I'd bought the diet, caffeine free varieties, plus other homemade fizzy stuff just so they're not missing out (yes I know about the sweetners but it's a one-off). So when a parent turns up with 40 cans of sugar loaded drinks and they all run to grab them before I've even noticed or had a chance to offer anything else... its very annoying! Cue spirited, cheeky kids turning into little vandals - tantrums and tummyaches galore... not an exaggeration.

North West scabby non-commuter town here

Years and years of going to other childrens’ parties

Always there has been Coke, Irn-bru, Vimto, Vodka, Gin, Lemonade. Always. Sure as heck also at my children’s

It is not even seen as a “treat’ - because they have it everyday and have done since they were babies, in their bottles.

What about a little drop of whisky in their bottle, makes them sleep. My gran swore by it, they even had a name for it, John Jameson babies. It would counteract all that sugar and caffeine. I'm surpised it isn't recommended.

Obviously not for south east affluent commuter towns.

Intrigueddotcom · 23/05/2022 16:08

And you did activities for some of them.

What?

So it wasn’t a party

it was a few friends over

and the parent bought 40 cans….. why? For a small play date?!

Yes seriously. Can I also point out we also had a lot of fun. My question was just something I'd found a bit odd. Everyone's forgotten that caffeine makes you hyper, or doesn't it. I'm off to search Google...

🤔

Intrigueddotcom · 23/05/2022 16:09

What kind of “rascal vandalism” did they do op?

What?

Yeah they loved it, trust me!

Not sure that Supernanny counts as peer reviewed evidence, tbh.

I can't see how sugar, which raises blood glucose and gives you extra energy, doesn't also give children a sugar rush.

If anyone can point to proper studies on this, I'd be interested to read them.

Maybe look into it yourself?

CupidStunt22 · 23/05/2022 16:19

You guys realise that a can of coke has around the same amount of sugar as the same sized glass of apple juice, right? I bet you're not all "Oooh Tarquinus is just hyper after the freshly pressed cloudy apple, he's simply not allowed it!" in your south east affluent commuter town?

Sugar not my issue

it is fact carbonated

pretty much worst thing you can do for teeth in terms of diet

I think you will find that apples in south east affluent commuter towns are entirely different and the sugar is magical and doesn't count.

Oddly enough this county is known for its delicious apples

5zeds · 23/05/2022 16:25

I like apples and coke, though not together. My children didn’t drink fizzy drinks really until their teens. They seemed ok.

Fairislefandango · 23/05/2022 16:25

Good lord, what a drama. Kids sometimes get hyper and behave badly when they're excited. It's not the sugar. My dc only had fizzy drinks at parties or on days out when they were little, but it wouldn't have even occurred to me to object to them on occasions like that.

I can't see how sugar, which raises blood glucose and gives you extra energy, doesn't also give children a sugar rush.

I can't see why you'd think it would. What do you mean by 'extra energy', anyway? Energy is energy. It doesn't just surge uncontrollably out of your body. Much of it is just used for maintaining your bodily functions, or stored as fat etc. Do you feel the desire to run about if you've had a big piece of cake or a sweet drink? I doubt it, because that's not what sugar does. If I eat a load of sugary stuff it makes me feel tired and lethargic actually. Caffeine is a completely different matter though.

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 16:25

Crunchymum · 23/05/2022 15:51

Well tbf the only person who had the diet one was my other child who is presxribed a sugar.free diet

@Anorthernlass Surely if your DC is on a prescribed sugar free diet then you know what to avoid etc and that "diet" alternatives are full of artificial sweeteners and many other nasty ingredients.

I say this as a parent of a child who is on a strict, life long "lowest sugar possible" diet, overseen by a consultant and a dietitian and numerous other HCP.

Oh dear I feel.like everyone here thinks I'm lying. Were going through several diets. Low sugar is one. Occasional diet drinks are not on the restricted list and I hate to see any kid feel different or left out. It was a compromise.

Of course, special south east affluent commuter town apples. I wouldn't have expected any less.

The Guardian has a pretty good lay review of the myth around the Sugar Rush

And here's a peer reviewed meta analysis:

As I say, whilst sugar content is high, it’s not that the means I will never buy my children a fizzy drink whilst at primary (post primary - travelling on bus, their call but when one of them had at his grandparents once, he said it was horrible and spicy!)

my brother is a dentist. And indeed every dentist I have been to said same - keep away from carbonated drinks as much as possible. They are the devil’s work when it comes to teeth

A sensible assumption

NumberTheory · 23/05/2022 16:29

YANBU to find it annoying that someone just turns up to a party that isn't a BYO with a bunch of food or drink for the party goers and hands it out. That's poor manners. And, I think, very unusual.

YABU to blame the kids behaviour on it and to make a case that artificially sweetened versions of pop are okay in this context when regular versions aren't. But it's your party and you can serve what you like.

Anorthernlass · 23/05/2022 16:35

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 16:08

I did get a bit loud on meth amphetamine, though.

I can't believe it took so long for that joke. Even Johnny Depp didn't get high on coke 😉

I would not be bothered by fizzy drinks at a party In itself. It's a treat.

but I would be concerned that someone brought drinks to my kids party.

but anyway, can't do anything about it now. Won't do any harm.

Anonymous48 · 23/05/2022 16:41

I was prepared to say you weren't being unreasonable for not wanting fizzy drinks. But then I read your post and saw that you yourself had provided fizzy drinks! I would much prefer my kids to drink pop with sugar than with artificial sweeteners, if they are going to have it as a treat. So you are very unreasonable.

Intrigueddotcom · 23/05/2022 16:42

Oh dear I feel.like everyone here thinks I'm lying.

i don’t think you’re lying about his diet

if anything it’s about a “play date” comprising 10 children aged 10 years old where you put on food and drink and did activities. And then they all got crazy, a number got Ill and then they engaged in some “rascal” violence

it sounds like a script for a “poor Britain” documentary

Bickles · 23/05/2022 16:43

Fizzy isn’t a thing at kids parties. Jugs of squash, yes, but no fizzy drinks.
DS can’t be the only one who vomits after fizzy.
Also won’t someone think about the teeth!🤦‍♀️

MrsMiddleMother · 23/05/2022 16:43

Yanbu! Young kids shouldn't be drinking pop, full of sugar or addictives and they DEFINITELY should had spoken to you first! My kid would now be asking for a can of whatever for weeks,in turn making me the bad guy.
