Evening bump - 5 mins to sunset

Has anyone explained why they think you're being unreasonable?

Pricklesinperil · 25/09/2022 19:05

Hi TheInebriati There was one poster from the Scottish Isles who explained that hedgehogs were an invasive species there. Other than that, no (that I can remember)

Hi @Pricklesinperil Attached a photo of hedgehog visitor to DSis's garden. I wondered what the pale bluish lump amongst its bristles were, and thought you might know?

If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful. We did wonder that it might have problems as it does appear before dusk and DSis thought it on the small side. We have a hedgehog sanctuary local to us so if there is a problem we have some expert assistance available for him/her...

Thelnebriati · 26/09/2022 21:26

@TheNoodlesIncident That looks like a sheep tick, you can get rid of them by painting them with vegetable oil, it will suffocate and drop off. But don't get it all over the hog. Or you can use a tick removing tool. But on no account should you use and chemical tick or insect killers, they will kill the hedgehog.

Hi @TheNoodlesIncident as TheInebriati says, it’s a tick. That photo looks like it was taken during daylight - was the hedgehog out in the day?

here’s what hedgehog street say about ticks on hedgehogs. If you are still worried after reading it, or can see other signs of sickness, then please call them. See the photos for the advice about ticks and how to call hedgehog street

let us know and thank you and your sister for caring

I’m sorry to tag you again @TheNoodlesIncident . I’m sorry but I’m tired and just re-read your post properly. Absolutely please get help for that hedgehog, it has a tick, it’s small (probably this years hoglet) and it’s out in the day.

Morning bump

OP posts:
AgathaMystery · 27/09/2022 10:27

Morning all! Our hogs are getting rather portly... we feed them water & kitten biscuits and have now also gained a homeless cat who is going to be rehomed when we can lure him inside. So we are now feeding creatures twice a night. I forgot to put food out 2 nights ago & the Hogs were livid! They shoved their saucer around the patio until I got out of bed. It was only 1am so I was totally happy to be woken by them and get out of bed...!!! This isn't the first time they've complained so loudly about being 'neglected' - they are sweet but so impolite. They turn their back on me when i go out to feed them as if i can't see them if they can't see me! The little one is much more confident than the big one. I have also seen them lumbering across our large front lawn. They always look like they are late for work, don't they?

Can I ask everyone on this thread to support the PTES and the RSPB because Legislation that protects nature in the UK is under attack.

The government is threatening to remove the various laws and policies that:

  • protect our best wildlife sites, homes for myriad endangered species
  • prevent unrestricted development, and
  • help farmers support wildlife on their land

The implications of this are so profound that PTES is working with the RSPB and other wildlife charities to do what we can to stop it. Nature needs every support it can get in a hostile world in the midst of climate and biodiversity crises.

We want our politicians to understand how much we all care about protecting nature. The RSPB has created an easy way to demand action from your local MP. By following the link below you can find your local MP and send a simple letter calling for their support. You can amend it to your own words if you wish.

Please take this quick and easy opportunity to tell your MP today to urge the government to think again about the natural world.

Take action now

Well it’s hibernating time soon. Which will bode well.
Or a very late litter maybe.
