Talking with a colleague lately about common names from the 80s and 90s... the usual., Sarah, Laura, Becky, Lydia, Lindsay, Louise, Emma etc..

We then got talking about more unusual names we went to school with "Hester.. Paula..Hermione (way before Harry Potter 😂).."

I just cannot imagine a baby or small child being called Paula! I can't even imagine a person my age (30s) being called Paula!

Any other names you just cannot imagine as a baby/small child?

Agatha - not come back despite old lady chic! Likewise Mavis.

I would have said 'Dave' but I know a 2 year old Dave (nb. Not David) 😂.

Stephanie, Joanne, Melanie. Might be another 50 years.

I wonder if its regional - I know plenty of Paula's my age (mid 30's). I have come across babies with almost all the names in your first line - except Lyndsay. They are pretty classic names!

I recently looked after a baby 'Dave' which was surprising to me. Preferable to some of the modern names I come across though, like 'Boss'.

Whereabouts are you? I'm in the north east and really don't know any Paula's!

Steve. Little baby Steve.

I’m a Paula and I’m in my 50s. It’s an (awful) 70s name. I wanted to be called Joanne.
My dad is Keith!
A young person called Mark or Gary would be strange to me or any name that was popular in the 70s wouldn’t seem quite right

I'm a teacher and many of the names mentioned in this thread are quite popular. I have a few Colins and Cynthias (parents are from other European countries so must be popular names there). Taught a Brian not long ago and currently have a Lauren and Jennifer in my class. Although not technically babies, they were babies not that long ago!

Jennifer I think is quite timesless.., along with Emily.. Elizabeth..

I know someone called Paula in her early 20s. I would find Pauline more old-fashioned. Dorcas is extremely old-fashoned - but I've met a Dorcas who would now be in her early 30s. I would be surprised to meet a baby or toddler called Nigel or Dennis or Ronald or Pamela or Joan or Linda. But you never know- a few years ago, Arthur and Archie and Amelia and Ruby all seemed like the sort of names that your great-aunt or uncle might have, and now are quite common among children.

Ha I know a fair few joannes from the 80s..and Stephanie's and Nicolas! Laura is the most common name of my generation mind... I don't know any little Laura's !

I'm a teacher and have seen a few John's, Anthony's, lately.

Some of our dated names are still popular in other countries. I know young children with some of these names who are first generation immigrant of Chinese, Polish, Eastern block and across Africa (Catholic background) parents. So while not popular, I do hear of them.

Eightiesfan · 20/05/2022 23:15

All reasonable names but can't imagine many babies being called these now, although they will probably come back.

I think Paula would fit in well with all the millions of Avas and Islas currently doing the rounds.

CoralBells · 20/05/2022 23:17

Baby Maureen

Parentcarerandcrazy · 20/05/2022 23:19

Someone I know named their son Michael a couple of years ago, a nice strong name, and I was amazed at my own reaction to it as it's not at all an unusual or 90s name but no one seems to call their child it these days so it took me some getting used to

OpportunityKnocks · 20/05/2022 23:21

Baby Kelly. It's a very mid-80's name.

Somethingsnappy · 20/05/2022 23:21

I know of a little baby Sid!

We're there many Ava's and Islas in the 50s when Paula was a little more common m?

Steve. Little baby Steve.

I hear you! 😆

mrsfollowill · 20/05/2022 23:23

My era was Joanne, Tracey, Karen, Sharon and Lisa.
The boys were Wayne, Gary, Mark, Steve and Dave- everyone knows a Dave!
The parents were- Derek, Keith or Kevin or a Linda, Pauline or Lynne.
I think someone earlier summed it up- in a few years we'll see baby Sharon named after her Great grandmother and it will seem a 'fresh' new name.

Yes, whenever I hear the name, I think of a brassy, flirty barmaid!

Somethingsnappy · 20/05/2022 23:24

Wee baby Jason?

Winniewonka · 20/05/2022 23:24

From my primary school in the 60s, possibly not already mentioned, will they be revived in 2050?
