I find myself wishing I knew nothing about it and hadn't read the story about the winning couple!
All day I've been ruminating over that extraordinary sum of money and what it must feel like....it's left me feeling really flat especially when the imagination suddenly dissolves and I'm left mulling over my actual reality of bills and debts and whatever.

It's not even like I have a bad life in so far as I've got a roof over my head and a secure job, no posh holidays or particular luxuries but in the fortune position of not having to worry too much about the food bill and can have a meal out once in a while. And we're all healthy which £184million cannot buy.

The irony is I don't even play the bloody lottery!!

But yeh, very very flat

Theres nothing to be upset about. Money is evil the more you have got the more you want. Read some of the devastating stories on people who have won the lottery and would do anything to have not won it.

OddsandSods · 19/05/2022 22:38

They’ve made themselves a massive kidnap risk.

Why are people so hung up on the fact they live in a 600k house? They might be mortgaged up to the eye balls, and have shit loads of debt.

This is exactly why lottery winners should never go public. Jealousy causes hate.

I’m happy for them….but I wish it was me 😁

Cos people are, in general, nasty, jealous fuckers. Which is why if I won, I’d buy a huge country property and do more animal rescue with as little contact with most people as possible. The dream. 🥰

I felt pretty cheesed off with the news. Wouldn't it be lovely if they donated £145 million to the NHS and kept £3 million for themselves? Never happens though, does it? I guess that is why I don't buy tickets.

This couple have given away more than half of their £115 million win so far.

Wow, what awful comments on this thread! Just because they lived in a nice house anyway, worked hard and had a good life makes them unworthy winners? They seem lovely people and also animal lovers so I’m sure they will make lots of their family and friends and lots of animal charities richer.

They seemed very nice people, he looked as if he had been working very hard for his lifestyle for years, he reminds me of a friend the same age. I’m not sure I would have gone public myself cos of the security aspect but I see their reasons to do so.

Also like absolute fuck would anyone on this thread win the lottery and the first thought be “what charities can I give some to?”

Your first thought would be - what can I spend it on for myself? Whether that’s paying off your mortgage / buying a new house / going for lunch / being a Ferrari etc you would put yourself first and then think of others second.

No one, but no one plays the lottery just so they could donate their winnings to worthy causes Confused

I've been sniggering at all that too!

I suspect that some people think that if they ingratiate themselves with the lottery gods by being all virtuous, selfless and doe-eyed, and show how absolutely lovely they will be when they are loaded, that they will save the NHS, cure world hunger and bring joy and happiness to all and sundry, then they will be rewarded with £150m Grin

OddsandSods · 19/05/2022 22:38

They’ve made themselves a massive kidnap risk.

Yes I agree, they've made themselves an everything risk. I don't know why they couldn't have attempted to keep it quiet at least for a bit. They obviously think their friends and family can't be trusted.

Mostess · 19/05/2022 22:41

Roastonsun8 · 19/05/2022 21:01

I stopped doing the lottery as I don't agree with one person winning that amount of money. Why can't it be split? It would bring much more joy to many people.

To quote Bill Bryson, nobody should be that rich, with the exception of oneself.

Tinkerblonde1 · 19/05/2022 22:42

OddsandSods · 19/05/2022 22:38

They’ve made themselves a massive kidnap risk.

This exactly. Also their families and their animals.
I wouldn't sleep for worry.

Sparklingbrook · 19/05/2022 22:43

I think if the win is £184 million then it's very likely that charity donations would be considered. Maybe not the first thing, but it would be.

Crackercrazy · 19/05/2022 22:43

Lykia · 19/05/2022 22:20

I purposely don't do the lottery when it's a big win. I find the amounts too scary. What happens to your children do they suddenly need bodyguards as they are a kidnap risk? Would I need a bodyguard?

Would my children go off the rails and get into drugs? How do you keep them grounded when you have that amount of money? And yes I know I could give it all away and just keep a small amount.

I know a lot of marriages of marriages fail when couples win big. Give me a mill or 2 and that'd do me nicely.

This is exactly how I feel. The thought of winning an amount that big gives me palpitations. I’d be happy with a million.

tulips27 · 19/05/2022 22:47

I think a lot of jealousy is being expressed compared with past big jackpot winners, it must be to do with the fact that so many of us are struggling financially or know we will be soon.

People who say a million would be better, I disagree. With a million you can't give your parents a nice retirement and buy houses for your siblings as well as one for yourself.

thenightsky · 19/05/2022 22:50

Beachsidesunset · 19/05/2022 21:35

That amount would keep the NHS running for about 8 hours.

Sad, but true 😢

Benjispruce4 · 19/05/2022 22:24

£184 million? Wow. I’d make lots of people comfortable and clear people’s debts.

You could make some people comfortable now if you wanted. If you took on another job, or got some overtime you could do it for even more.

If you want to give money away there’s no reason not to start today.

Right but if you woke up in the night to find your numbers had come up you wouldn’t lie there dreaming of what charities do give to. You’d lie there thinking of houses or diamonds or wool patterns or whatever floats your boat.

These people have been criticised for looking at houses at a first thought and I don’t think that’s really fair

Andouillette · 19/05/2022 22:54

Good for them, I hope they have an excellent time deciding what to do with it all! I would love to win any amount and while away time when I am driving fantasising about all the things I would do, who would be getting a chunk, which charities I would support etc. The thing I would really like to do is buy up crappy, rundown properties and turn them all into good quality affordable housing, some rental, some rent to buy, some for sale. It would be lovely to be able to do that and only have to break even as I'd have more than enough left to enjoy my own life. I don't think I'd buy a house, I love the one I've got but I would love to buy some of the land around it and do some major landscaping!

Sparklingbrook · 19/05/2022 22:57

No probably not in a lot of cases, but I don't think it's true to say that it would not be thought about when there's such a huge some of money.
That said, the winner didn't even wake his wife up to tell her they'd won which seems weird to me.

tulips27 · 19/05/2022 22:59

I would buy my nasty, bullying neighbour's houses (both sides! 😀

AngeloMysterioso · 19/05/2022 22:59

User3568975431146 · 19/05/2022 21:35

What depressed me about it was that the first thing they did was look up houses with no upper limit.

The first thing I'd have done was find out who sold me it and give them a million.

The number of lives they could change with that amount of money and the first they they do is look at houses. 🙄

I mean, that’s what I do when I play Fantasy Rightmove and I haven’t even won the lottery! But if I did, for sure I’d be straight onto my Saved Properties list to check out which gorgeous country houses have caught my eye recently that I could now actually buy if I wanted…

(I think I’d go for this one)

YourWinter · 19/05/2022 22:59

It’s an unimaginable amount. I definitely wouldn’t go public if I won anything, which I won’t because I don’t buy lottery tickets.

I wonder, though, how a couple can win with one ticket. Would it have to have been bought from a joint account? What if one of them actually bought the ticket?

When there are children (even adult offspring) from an earlier relationship, doesn’t it complicate things in terms of inheritance? What if one of this couple dies very soon, before they’ve apportioned it? I just think surely an individual would be the winner, and not automatically their spouse too?

HikingforScenery · 19/05/2022 23:06

Wows! Good for them. I’ve just been asking dh about the changes he’d make if we won this. He’d stay in his job but I’d resign almost immediately because I hate going into the office.

I’d probably give each sibling and parent a £1m each and think about what to do with the rest.
I’d not disclose the amount won to anyone, not even my siblings, as loving and supportive as they are.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 19/05/2022 23:07

I play the lottery and would be happy just to win a million. Enough to buy a house and go on holiday and to be able to pay bills comfortably. Tbh I’m not sure what I would do with all that money. I defo wouldn’t go public..
everyone I knew would come out of the woodwork. If I did ever win more than I needed, I would carry on working... for my sanity, I would donate my earnings to charity. I know exactly who would be getting some money from me.

ladydimitrescu · 19/05/2022 23:10

If I won that amount I couldn't keep anywhere near it all - I'd give several million to my family, and set up accounts with life savings for my children. Plus savings accounts with a million each per godchild (I have 14). And then I'd give a hefty percentage to charity also.
Id pay off my closest friends mortgages, or buy them homes. There are so many people who have been wonderful to me id love to be able to surprise with life changing money.
I have several health problems so if me and Dh could afford to live comfortably without working, so he could be here when I'm particularly poorly to help with the children, that would be enough for me. I'd also make sure we volunteered for charities If not working!
I'd definitely like a couple holidays though!
Not that I've though about it much 😂

carbay · 19/05/2022 23:11

One of the first things I'd do is give money to the woman who runs the local cat rescue place from her house. Her vet bills are huge and she's broke. So many small charities would benefit massively from a 5 figure sum, you could happily part with a hundred million and never miss it.....make that a hundred and fifty million.

Private healthcare and a view of the sea would suit me just fine.

whydoesthedog · 19/05/2022 23:21

Why the fuck would anyone give it to the NHS? Like the government gives two shits, let them fund it through taxes like they should. Better off helping individual people to get private treatment.
