I bought a wedding dress on Saturday. I have decided that I despise it and would like to return it (or set it on fire). The shop (little boutique) only issues store credit. I don’t think it’s likely that I will use thousands of pounds of wedding boutique store credit.

What would you do? I’m screwed, aren’t I?

It's been a few days, you must've liked the dress to buy it so what's making you despise it now?

Riverlee · 19/05/2022 13:56

The obvious answer would be to sell it.

Are there any wedding bridal companies locally that rent out dresses, that you could sell it to?

Rainbowqueeen · 19/05/2022 13:56

Yes it sounds like an expensive mistake. Can you sell it and recoup some of your money?

if you need a wedding dress anyway I’d go and have a look in the boutique and see if there is something you love before making a decision

150poundrebate · 19/05/2022 13:57

When I tried it on, I thought it was really pretty. However, almost immediately after, it just seemed very basic. Very identikit ‘bridal’, which isn’t me at all. Or the wedding aesthetic I want.

The idea of getting married in it makes me feel really sad.

Have you actually got the dress, or just paid a deposit? Can you afford to. Loose the deposit.

DDivaStar · 19/05/2022 13:58

Can't you just use the store credit to buy another dress? 🤔

I actually have the dress.

I can afford to lose the money. I’d just really rather not. But, it’s my own stupid fault.

That's a dramatic change of feeling. Could change again. (I speak as someone who constantly regrets purchases of much, much smaller things).
Could you show us the dress for some outside opinions OP?

Can you take it to someone who can alter it for you so it's what you want?

I don’t think I want anything from that shop.

Would you get more from selling the dress as you would in store credit? We’re there any dresses there that you do like now, even if that’s a loss. Ultimately it might be an expensive mistake.

Neverhot · 19/05/2022 14:02

Are there no other dresses you like? Could you use it for bridesmaid dresses? Or hang around the shop, wait for someone to buy their dress and see if they will use your credit and give you the cash? If you knock a bit off I'm sure someone would accept.

RishiRich · 19/05/2022 14:02

Can you go back to the boutique and swap it for another one? Alternatively, just keep it. You liked it enough to buy it in the first place.

I suppose I’ll have to try re swapping. See if there’s anything else I like. Unless they’ve had new stock since Saturday, this seems unlikely, though.

As someone said upthread, an expensive mistake! Stupid dress could have paid for our honeymoon. ☹️

Is there a cooling off period? Bring it back today and tell them you have to bring it back and you would like a refund. Tell them if you need a wedding dress again, you will shop with them but for now you would like a refund. Bring someone with you. Good luck.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 19/05/2022 14:49

Look at them for a swap. If not could you take a credit note and sell it (at a discount)? That way you get some of your money back and the buyer gets a discount on the dress they purchase?

Fabpinky · 19/05/2022 14:51

Can you show us

uggmum · 19/05/2022 14:52

Could you have it altered into a style that you like.

It would cost you more but a skilled seamstress may be able to alter it into something more individual.

You would have direct input into the design and you might fall in love with it

ehb102 · 19/05/2022 14:55

Negotiate with the boutique. Ask for a transferable credit note, like a gift voucher, then sell that to someone else. £900 for a £1000 gift voucher is a good deal. Or get the boutique to sell it for you, less a restocking fee.

purplecorkheart · 19/05/2022 14:56

You purchases it in a shop so basically you have no rights as it is a change of mind. They do not have to accept the return as the item is no faulty. They do not actually have to offer a credit note.

You have a few options:

  1. Keep the dress, get it altered, embellished to your taste.

  2. Sell it.

  3. Swap it.

  4. Get the credit note and see if the shop could order in something that is to your taste (clearly this depends on the wedding date).

maddening · 19/05/2022 14:56

Find something you like and see if they can order it via their shop?

hellomeownow · 19/05/2022 15:20

If you can afford to lose the money, try and sell it but even if you can get a new dress.

I didn’t love mine and its a huge regret. You want to feel amazing on the day!

Fink · 19/05/2022 15:46

Do they do bridesmaid dresses? You could take it back, use the store credit to buy your bridesmaids' outfits, and buy a different dress for yourself.

Or have it altered to be more your style.

DaleTrimont · 19/05/2022 15:50

I agree that if there is nothing you like, find out if they can order something in that you do love.
Failing that, the credit note, or change it for bridesmaids dresses, and then a credit note for the difference.
What is the dress, and what do you ideally want ?

This is what I was going to suggest. You could sell it on a local Facebook group
