Do you know anyone who moved out at 18 (which wasn't for uni)

I was recently at my friends house and she said that her DD wanted to get a job and rent a flat with some friends . To be honest I was really shocked as although I know 18 is legally an adult in reality it seems like nowadays you are still more of a kid until your early 20s. Does anyone else know anyone who's dc moved out at 18 which wasn't for uni but actually moved 'properly' out and lives independently.

My daughter moved to London for work at 17 then Portugal at 19. She loves her life and is doing great.
my son won’t move out till he’s about 45 I’m sure as the kid is 11 and still can’t make toast.

rainbowandglitter · 18/05/2022 21:49

I moved out at 19 and got a mortgage with my boyfriend.

LetitiaLeghorn · 18/05/2022 21:51

I moved out at 18. No trauma with my parents, I just wanted to do things that happened not to be close to home.

dottiedodah · 18/05/2022 21:53

I think 18 is very young tbh. Many girls would be at risk .my dd is still at home .very expensive and not a steady home.78

I moved out at 17 to a hostel for the homeless and then got my own flat from there. It's not what I would want for my kids but I survived.

florenceandthemac · 18/05/2022 21:54

I didn't end up taking my uni place (which I would have been mi img away for), I got a job instead, and then moved out at 19 as I really wanted my own place/space

florenceandthemac · 18/05/2022 21:54

*moving away

FabulousKilljoys · 18/05/2022 21:54

I moved out at 18 because I was pregnant with DD1, I moved in with my boyfriend.

Exh and exdp both moved out at 17. One to live in a hostel and the other took a job on a holiday camp and lived in a caravan.

My DS1 moved out at 19 and got a flat with his girlfriend.

Hotcuppatea · 18/05/2022 21:55

I did and so did two of my sisters. I moved to London from a small town. I had the time of my life.

FabulousKilljoys · 18/05/2022 21:56

No trauma with parents for me or my DS1, just wanted to live with respective bf/gf.

But I know for my exh and exdp they had crappy relationships with their parents and wanted out.

ethelredonagoodday · 18/05/2022 21:56

Yep my brother did. He didn't go to uni, was working, and couldn't stick living at home, so moved in with mates! Was late 90s though!

Riverlee · 18/05/2022 21:58

Yes, my son. He’s doing an apprenticeship in a town many miles away.

NannyOggsWhiskyStash · 18/05/2022 22:01

I moved out at 16, and still managed to get an education and good jobs, my daughter moved out at 19, is happily married with a baby, my son left at 17, now on his 2nd degree. There is no rulebook on life.

SoManyTshirts · 18/05/2022 22:04

DD did. She had dropped out of school and had a difficult relationship with my then H. In recognition of my part in that I subsidised her until she became more independent.

I don’t think it helped our relationship but all three of us were at the end of our tethers.

TheDogsMother · 18/05/2022 22:05

I left home at 16 in 1980 and was a lodger with a family for about a year. Next was a house share then renting on my own.

Ccharlotte · 18/05/2022 22:06

I did. It was for uni but I moved into a house and that was it, I only went back home for visits/weekends. My parents helped me pay for rent for the 1st 9 months and I paid it after that (got a summer job that turned into part-time work for 2nd year). It was 20 years ago though!

00deed1988 · 18/05/2022 22:06

I had just turned 19 when I moved out. Had been working full time for nearly 2 years. Now 33. Rent was extortionate though, wish I stayed home and saved it for a deposit!

OldTinHat · 18/05/2022 22:07

Both of my DS. One to rent a home with his GF and the other, yes, uni, but he never came home and lived with his GF after a term at uni, took a year out living with her and then they both re enrolled.

Ccharlotte · 18/05/2022 22:08

There was no public transport where I was from so the only way to have any independence was to move out. Otherwise I would have needed lifts for everything: college, work, social.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/05/2022 22:10

My sister did at 16! I was at uni and she couldn’t stand living with our abusive mother anymore so moved in with her older boyfriend!

SAB10 · 18/05/2022 22:14

I left home and moved to Holland at just turned 16, moved into a squat and never came home. My older sister met her husband at 16 when we were in a traveller convoy in Morocco and my parents left her there in his bus after they'd been together literally a week. I doubt we're exactly the best examples though...

SAB10 · 18/05/2022 22:15

I think an 18 year old will be fine though!

AdoraBell · 18/05/2022 22:16

I moved out when I was 16. DDis, older than me, was 14 when she moved out. She didn’t have a home or room, she sofa surfed.

HMSSophia · 18/05/2022 22:16

My DD did. Worked in a pub in London. Is now on 37k and has a great future as a sommelier. She had four As at a level but didn't want to go to uni. She is amazing:)

CustardySergeant · 18/05/2022 22:21

I moved out at 16. The relief was incredible! On both sides, of course.
