To not feel proud of my country at the moment?

Livingtothefull · 18/05/2022 19:29

I really want to be proud - there are plenty of things to be proud of in the UK (great people/culture/heritage) - but the way we are governed at the moment just sickens me.

We have a liar and a criminal as Prime Minister, I can't bear the sight or sound of him now. 'Partygate' showed us just how much contempt he has for the British public. People are facing huge cost of living rises and poverty, and the Government offered nothing to help address this in the Queen's speech.

The latest is their proposal to break international law.

By the way the Monarchy was shown up as the useless and empty institution it is through the prorogation of Parliament episode, far from a supposed guardian of democracy. I don't have anything against the RF personally, but as an institution it has presided over all of this and yet has nothing to say about it all.

I am sick of hearing about the Jubilee as well, I see nothing to celebrate in what we have all been through over the past couple of years and are facing now. 'Rich privileged woman lives a long time' does not mean anything imo, in the context of the huge numbers of people who have died before their time due to Covid. Many of them elderly and vulnerable people in care homes - where the Government has recently been found (again) to have broken the law by putting them in harm's way.

They'll have time off if they riot. 👌

I agree @Livingtothefull . Ive just seen jamie oliver on ch4 news talking about the government backtracking on what they are doing about child obesity. People like him and martin lewis are pulling their hair out.

Trying to think of the last time I felt 'proud' of/to be 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Think it was in 2008 when the baggage handlers at Glasgow airport booted fuck out of those would-be suicide bombers. 😄

Yes!! 🤣 Definitely this!

Agree jubilee is in bad taste time-wise. They should have done things that didn't cost any public money. I think attitudes may be very different here to a lot of the rest of the country though, so maybe that's a local opinion. I'm NW Highlands. I know two people that openly like the royals. Most are ambivalent. Many are actively against. The Highlands have a lot of history. Nobody will be having street parties here.

I've lived in a few countries and I am proud to be British. I do think we have one of the funniest, barmiest populations in the world, there are some very good people out there with very good hearts.

I, like so many, am horrified by this government. I didn't vote for them, didn't vote for Brexit either and think this administration may be more horrifying than that of the 80s. People are being forced to survive not flourish, it very much makes me think of a modern serfdom. It's revolting.

I don't understand why you think that the monarchy are guardians of British democracy, they are not. I suggest reading around the subject of parliamentary democracy and the role of the monarchy through history. It's dull but it'll give you a nuanced understanding of how the Monarchy survived throughout the ages. The Monarch has never protected or guarded the population, that's a complete fallacy.

As a Brit I feel let down by the government at the moment but I haven't lost hope, I hope to see brighter days.

I have a Ukrainian coming, still in Ukraine wait for this awful governments pointless Visa. I'm worried and embarrassed about the state of the country she'll find. She won't even be able to find a dentist for her child, I'm going to have to tell her there's no dentist for them and I'm dreading them seeing how difficult it is to get a GP appointment. I'm just praying they don't get sick.

Livingtothefull · 18/05/2022 20:03

Where did I say that I wasn't proud of us as a nation (I said precisely the opposite in my initial post) or that I wanted to leave (Brexit has made that much harder even if I wanted to)?

I want to feel safe and carefree like many of you evidently do; unfortunately I can't. I have an adult DC with severe physical and learning disabilities, and I am scared stiff for his future because have experienced how badly he has been failed by the Government. Just one example: he is supposed to be at his special needs college this week but instead is at home because the college is unable to recruit enough care staff to look after the students (thanks again Brexit and minimum wage). We can't even recruit carers ourselves because it is term time and they are not available. So I am having to combine caring for DS with my full time job.

This isn't about me though and I am aware there are other people much worse off. But I am entitled to be angry and apprehensive about the future.

I agree with you op.

My hometown has been slagged off as if we are all thick etc etc this week because we booed the national anthem.

Yet we've paid £12 million of the tax payers money to silence claims about fucking Andrew.

thereisonlyoneofme · 18/05/2022 20:03

What other country would you like to be in ? I dont think there is a country on the planet where a good part of the population dont think their governments are crap.
The cost of living situation is a global problem.
Be grateful you are allowed to express your dissatisfaction, you could be in Russia

the80sweregreat · 18/05/2022 20:04

Shell energy have put my monthly gas and electricity up 54 pounds for a modest house despite being in credit and very frugal with the usage etc. goodness knows what it'll be by October
How much do they make ? Millions.
I know it's not as black and white as that etc etc but it makes me angry to be honest and I'm lucky I can absorb this rise ( for now )
Many can't.
Riots won't help though , but that policewoman who complained that she couldn't manage on her wages might turn a blind eye! Who knows?
They are as fed up as we all are.

DogsAndGin · 18/05/2022 20:05

Well this is cheerful isn’t it 🧐

SomethigWentBang · 18/05/2022 20:06

I’m not sure we can be proud of our culture and heritage. Okay we’ve had some decent moments… but we have pillaged and plundered the globe for many centuries. Sun never sets on the empire and all that.

The bank holiday will be handy for getting some extra rioting in.

There were many they’re going to riot threads, maybe it was the Jubilee they were waiting for

No I will do no such thing. I am not 'miserable' btw but am very angry about what is happening to this country and entitled to state what I think about it. I am one of the lucky ones btw who is not facing poverty, but I know first hand what is happening to other people. And some of them won't be able to afford to party even if they want to.

You are entitled to state what you want.

You posted in ‘Aibu’ on a public forum, where people are entitled to answer.

and some peoples opinion is that your are unreasonable AND miserable.

They have the right to state that too, surely?

You do realise that the cost of living/fuel crisis is a global issue, not just the UK problem. Why don't you move to Russia , I've heard Vlad's a real friendly dude

Eve · 18/05/2022 20:14

I hear you OP

Kendodd · 18/05/2022 20:14

Be grateful you are allowed to express your dissatisfaction, you could be in Russia

Why? Why should I feel grateful the country isn't even worse? The point is the country is worse than it was, should I just shrug my shoulders and be grateful as long as one country on the planet is doing worse?

fyn · 18/05/2022 20:15

@LadyCampanulaTottington which countries are these that aren’t facing any inflation? Spain is at 9.8%, Britain 9%, America 8.5%, Germany 7.3%, Austria 6.8% just be thankful we aren’t at 20% like countries such as Sri Lanka.

Livingtothefull · 18/05/2022 20:18

'Love people like you.....so negative. perhaps some of us like the royals, not resent and envy them. I bet your from a very middle class background, university, but resent that others have done better than yoI'

That is a huge supposition to make. You don't know anything about my background or education, I am aware others have done better than me and don't resent it. Overall I am pretty proud of what I have achieved through caring for my DS and progressing professionally. And I (like most others) got where I am through my own efforts not by being born into privilege. I was also very clear that it was the institution I resented not the Royals themselves, and no I don't envy their position at all.

Just read the international press - at best the United Kingdom is regarded as a laughing stock. The only people who don't seem to realise this are around half of the British population!

VladmirsPoutine · 18/05/2022 20:24

I can't say I've ever felt proud about being from here. I do think it's however a good thing that the scales are falling from people's eyes. The UK historically is not a place to be proud of.

That is a good point and I agree although there are limits to what we can do about the past, only about addressing the present.
