To not feel proud of my country at the moment?

Livingtothefull · 18/05/2022 19:29

I really want to be proud - there are plenty of things to be proud of in the UK (great people/culture/heritage) - but the way we are governed at the moment just sickens me.

We have a liar and a criminal as Prime Minister, I can't bear the sight or sound of him now. 'Partygate' showed us just how much contempt he has for the British public. People are facing huge cost of living rises and poverty, and the Government offered nothing to help address this in the Queen's speech.

The latest is their proposal to break international law.

By the way the Monarchy was shown up as the useless and empty institution it is through the prorogation of Parliament episode, far from a supposed guardian of democracy. I don't have anything against the RF personally, but as an institution it has presided over all of this and yet has nothing to say about it all.

I am sick of hearing about the Jubilee as well, I see nothing to celebrate in what we have all been through over the past couple of years and are facing now. 'Rich privileged woman lives a long time' does not mean anything imo, in the context of the huge numbers of people who have died before their time due to Covid. Many of them elderly and vulnerable people in care homes - where the Government has recently been found (again) to have broken the law by putting them in harm's way.

Ah well, go be miserable in the corner.

After the past 2 years I'm well up for a celebration of anything.

We came second in Eurovision last weekend. We're getting an extra day off. We get to party with our friends and neighbours and the sun is out.

yesthatisdrizzle · 18/05/2022 19:40

Oh dear.

Still, look on the bright side eh, you could live in North Korea. Or Ukraine. Or Tonga. Or any number of other countries whose inhabitants have it far worse than we do.

the80sweregreat · 18/05/2022 19:40

I'm more concerned about food prices personally. I think this year will be hard for so many just to pay bills.
I think that the Jubilee will be pushed so that retailers can make a bit of a profit on the ' feel good ' bank holiday vibe , then it'll just go back to be miserable again.
I think some areas may look up , but overall it's a bleak outlook.

girlmom21 · 18/05/2022 19:41

At least we get an extra bank holiday

Livingtothefull · 18/05/2022 19:44

No I will do no such thing. I am not 'miserable' btw but am very angry about what is happening to this country and entitled to state what I think about it. I am one of the lucky ones btw who is not facing poverty, but I know first hand what is happening to other people. And some of them won't be able to afford to party even if they want to.

Love people like you.....so negative. perhaps some of us like the royals, not resent and envy them. I bet your from a very middle class background, university, but resent that others have done better than yoI

I think that whilst there were errors we got through covid ok. Remember that we actually counted deaths very strictly many countries did not

Economically we have spent a shit load to save jobs and push on and we will get through this year and come out a much stronger country than most of the western world will do.

Remember, we have had a world wide pandemic, a war in Europe and massive problems of economic supply resulting from them

We are a great nation. If you don't like living here don't let the door hit you on the arse on the way out.

sst1234 · 18/05/2022 19:45

So you would be proud of a country that follows international law? Good luck finding one of those on planet earth. International law and the institutions that ‘uphold’ it are just talking shops to create jobs for failed politicians who are only good enough to be diplomats.

The Monarch is a showpiece. Not sure why that is a surprise. That’s the way it has been for about 200 years.

What we need is a government that looks after the interests of its own country. In every way possible. Unfortunately this government is too incompetent to do that. This indeed warrants criticism.

cushioncovers · 18/05/2022 19:46

I'm not proud of our government but then I'm not stupid enough to vote Tory. I'm proud to be British though.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 18/05/2022 19:46

I’m with you.

The Jubilee celebrations are in REALLY poor taste. Yes, she’s lived a long time. She has royal food, royal doctors and lives in a palace with cash for heating and medicines.

The royals need to sack off their holidays and volunteer at a food bank.

I looked after the elderly for years and do you know what happens once you’re over 80? You’re written off.

And Boris is a joke. I’m sure he’s a laugh down the pub and he has some lustrous hair but that does not make him fit to run the country.

Crankley · 18/05/2022 19:47

Do let us know which country you will be moving to so we can wish you bon voyage.

Theluggage15 · 18/05/2022 19:47

Oh for God’s sake what’s wrong with a party?!! Don’t go to one if you don’t want to. If you really think things are so amazing in other countries I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

officebo · 18/05/2022 19:48

Economically we have spent a shit load to save jobs and push on and we will get through this year and come out a much stronger country than most of the western world will do.

How will we come out stronger than many other countries?

the80sweregreat · 18/05/2022 19:49

The jubilee is only so big business can

Twizbe · 18/05/2022 19:49

Price to attend my road's jubilee party? £0. I leave my house, walk a few steps, bam! There are my neighbours to chat to, spend time with, let the kids play with stuff they already have, happy days.

Seriously though, you feel what you feel. You can be angry or how ever you feel.

Not all of us will feel the same way. I'm safe, there's no bombs flying round my head, I'm good.

ArtVandalay · 18/05/2022 19:50

I couldn’t care less about any of the royals and certainly won’t be celebrating. Don’t know anyone that is.

but I’m glad of an extra bank holiday.

Butchyrestingface · 18/05/2022 19:51

Trying to think of the last time I felt 'proud' of/to be 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Think it was in 2008 when the baggage handlers at Glasgow airport booted fuck out of those would-be suicide bombers. 😄

Kendodd · 18/05/2022 19:52

Oh good, somebody straight in comparing us to North Korea so prove how great we're doing. Funny how they never compare us to our actual neighbours.

Completely agree OP, I'm old enough to remember the 90s 00s and how much better life was then. Twelve years or Tory rule and we're now a land of poverty corruption and food banks. Have the rich got richer over that time by chance?

emuloc · 18/05/2022 19:53

I agree with a lot of your post OP. The Government is shocking, showing a complete lack of concern for the people who will suffer real hardship, now, and with the coming Winter. The Royal Family will continue to be lauded, and live in opulence , and do nothing for the people, as always. Maybe people will make their voices heard when Winter hits, and they really start feeling the cold.

MarshaBradyo · 18/05/2022 19:53

Not a royalist by any stretch but our neighbours are doing a street party for the children etc

If you have the same you could stay home and ignore it. But I’m fine with some neighbourly spirit. It doesn’t all have to be depressing

Twizbe · 18/05/2022 19:54

@Kendodd France is in such a bad way that a far right candidate was a real contender for president ... that says something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Belgium not have a functioning government at the moment?

Kendodd · 18/05/2022 19:55

cushioncovers · 18/05/2022 19:46

I'm not proud of our government but then I'm not stupid enough to vote Tory. I'm proud to be British though.

I'm proud that I'm not stupid enough to vote Tory 😀

Agadoodoododont · 18/05/2022 19:55

@Livingtothefull I’m with you, this country is a disgrace. Huge rise in the use of food banks, I’m betting next winter we’ll hear of deaths from hypothermia. None of the government have any idea of real life for the majority of this country., wouldn’t know a budget supermarket unless they were led into it by the PRs.
And the sooner we’re rid of the Rf the better. None of them will ever choose between heating or eating, wait for years on an NHS waiting list or have to wait on a trolley in A&E. They should be ashamed flaunting their wealth in 2022.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 18/05/2022 19:57

All of us in other EU countries have had a pandemic too. We’re not facing the same economic implosion that seems to be on the horizon according to your national news.

Just saying.

Dauncets · 18/05/2022 19:57

The bank holiday will be handy for getting some extra rioting in.

the80sweregreat · 18/05/2022 19:57

Not everyone will have time off over the two Bank holidays : the stores will all be open to trade Union Jack bunting and alcohol and the workers will have to suck it up on minimum wage to pay the higher bills.
